Been looking for reliable, kid and dog safe mosquito repellent devices that didnt depend on needing mains power.

Mozfog has been on my radar for some time and it looks like they have had so much success in their normal web store they have expanded to Amazon now too. The agent used is water and natural pyrethrum, has a built in battery and can be run off a powerbank.

This weekend they are running a weekend sale on amazon the base kit is $49.95 (no coupon required), free shipping with Prime. Compared to their webstore where its $8.95 shipping (Flat rate Express shipping from WA) and price for 1 starts from $59.95. Running costs for the liquid claims FROM 7c/hour.

Many recommend Thermacell at bunnings but the feedback is a bit hit and miss, and the refills are pretty expensive.
I will say Thermacell does claim quite a huge coverage area in comparison compared to Mozfog which looks to be more like around a camp table for instance.

I plan to use mine at my outdoor gym area, at my power rack setup.

Hopefully this helps my homies in QLD especially where the mosquitos and midges be fierce with the amount of rain and heat we've been having…

Flies as well or only mozzies? The amount of flies is insane at the minute with all this rain. Need something to deal with the flies as I'm sick of chasing them around swatting them for 10 more to appear

    • Mozfog commened on their Facebook that feedback has been good on flies too

    • they did post a vid of it against flys in a clear box to show effect, seems somewhat effective, pyrethrum is noted as effective against flies.

i've set up a few of those yellow fly traps you get from bunnings, and it has been effective in trapping a HEAP of flies…but i have to wonder if its a chicken egg scenario where you have that trap…so it attracts more than you would have had if you DIDNT have it?

I've emptied one so far and the smell was absolutely stomach churning…

    • +2

U can make a fly killer trap witb yeast and water inside a 1 or 2L bottle. Cut a hole so the flies can go in.

      • +2

Funny you should say that. I too got the yellow fly traps from bunnings and you need to mix the enclosed powder with some water. It does not state what the active ingredient is except stating 'Made from food-grade ingredients'. From the look of it it does look like Yeast. hence why it smells so bad and attracts flies. Best part is it's completely non toxic and safe to use around kids and pets. It certainly does a good job.

        • +1

Yeah, my only problem is the putrid literal smell of death if the yellow trap is accidentally knocked and falls open.
The guts of a hundred dead flies and the gas from their rotting corpses is… well, as bad as it sounds.

          • @seanbaussie: Plus where do put the dead flies. I tried emptying it into a bag then into the bin but the smell stinks the whole area out. I guess you have to wait till bin day to empty it. I also use a n95 mask to stop breathing in the smell but it’s horrid. I’ve stopped using them like Jimothy says I think it attracts more flies the you would normally get

            • +1

@J B S: I put them in the garden behind the shed

            • +1

@J B S: I use a plastic strainer, then bury the flies in the garden soil. No smell. Great fertilizer.

          • @seanbaussie: I put them down the toilet and nearly vomited with the stench. Figure next time will put them in the gutter just as the inevitable Brisbane hardcore rain starts and they can be washed away there.

The stench was almost the worst thing I've ever encountered. And I have two small kids to compare against.

            Ugh.

On the plus side, the refills with the fly guts mixed with the water have done an even better job catching the next round of flies.

  • Would definitely be keen to hear how it goes

  • The black ants in Victoria have never been this crazy. I'm about to flamethrower my house

    • +1

understandable. we pay for professional pest control every year specifically for ants as my misso has a next level hate for them inside the house. (Cockroach too)

  • +1

    How safe is this?

Not keen on the idea that the kids are being sprayed with and breathing in insecticide

    • +1

safety data sheet from them here if you want to make your own mind up:

      Also from their FAQ:

      Is Mozfog™ Safe?

Mozfog's innovative approach offers an effective, natural, and safe method to repel insects. As with any product, it's essential to use it as directed and ensure proper ventilation in enclosed spaces. This product is NOT classified as a Hazardous Substance according to the criteria of NOHSC Worksafe Australia.

Low Toxicity: Natural pyrethrum has a long history of being used in various applications due to its low toxicity to humans, especially when compared to many synthetic alternatives, such as mosquito coils and heated pad-type devices. Plus, Mozfog vapor is 99.9% water!

Vapor Form: When dispersed as a vapor, the concentrations are designed to be effective against mosquitoes while maintaining a level that's safe for human exposure.

No Harmful Residues: The natural breakdown of pyrethrum ensures that there aren't harmful, long-lasting residues in your living spaces.

@Mr Mrrtn Great question. Some precautions with young children, anyone with asthma, pets such as cats and fish, bees etc. To be used in well-ventilated areas.

The active ingredient in Mozfog is natural Pyrethrum in water.

      Quote from WebMD under Precautions:

Pyrethrum is POSSIBLY SAFE when used on the skin in amounts less than 2 grams. While pyrethrum has limited toxicity at low doses, it can cause some side effects such as headache, ringing of the ears, nausea, tingling of fingers and toes, breathing problems, and other nervous system problems. Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of pyrethrum during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Children: It’s UNSAFE to put pyrethrum on children less than two years old.

Asthma: Exposure to pyrethrin might make asthma worse. Avoid using pyrethrum or pyrethrin products if you have asthma.

Allergy to ragweed and related plants: The pyrethrum flower or pyrethrin extracted from it may cause an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to the Asteraceae/Compositae family. Members of this family include ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, daisies, and many others. If you have allergies, be sure to check with your healthcare provider before using pyrethrum.

      https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-387/pyrethr…

Some more info here from Sustainable Gardening Australia:

      https://www.sgaonline.org.au/ggp-product-ingredient-review-p…

      From Mozfog:

Pets (Dogs & Cats): While pyrethrum is less toxic to dogs, it's important to use Mozfog™ in well-ventilated areas and ensure that pets, especially cats, do not directly inhale the vapor. As with any product, keep it out of reach to prevent ingestion.
Fish: Pyrethrum can be toxic to fish. Do not use Mozfog™ directly near ponds, aquariums, or any other water sources where fish are present.
Bees: Pyrethrum can affect bees. Do not use Mozfog™ if bee activity is present in your immediate surroundings.

    Been looking for reliable, kid

    😲😲😲

    • yeah thought for a while how i should punctuate it but thought this made most sense..maybe.

thats what you get for going to school of hard knocks (to the head).

  • Anyone used one of these and can comment on whether it works? Insect bite healer -

I would also like to know any feedback, especially against Midge bites.

    • +3

Ive used a brand called Bite Away for years (recommended by overseas friends in the US) which has been very effective at stopping the itch from the bite. This device looks similar and slightly more expensive than Bite Away which u can get from Amazon.

      • +1

Also there are chinese brands u can get from AliExpress but they were not as strong(hot) as Bite Away.

    • +4

I’ve also used bite away version and can confirm that it works in relieving the pain from stings and bites. It’s a great piece of kit to have handy when camping.

Isn't this just an expensive air mister?

    • I guess you could roll your own for (maybe) less? . From what I understand, the liquid included is just natural pyrethrum. So I guess if your choice of air mister can turn the mixture into a fine vapour plus whatever it costs for a few ML of the pyrethrum

      • +1

exaaaaactly, get this for $7 and add some pyrethrum, job done

  • Can anyone recommend a co2 trap or similar with no chemicals for under the house?

  • I assume you can’t leave this constantly on otherwise you’d run out of concentrate real quick

  • Looking at the details in the post and the replies to the comments makes me think OP is associated. Anyone has same thoughts or am I becoming weird and getting suspicious at everything in my life?

    • +1

      100% not associated.
Go ask mozfog themselves if you’re still suss.
Happy to also provide proof I paid $59.99 (full price) too, prior to posting this better deal lmfao.

Also happy for mod team to use whatever tools they have at disposal to cross examine me.

Hope you don’t think I’m also associated with ‘Big Watermelon’ too based off my post history and actually participating in forum banter.

  • Reporting back - first night trial, only saw 4 mozzies, killed 2. 3 bites though.

Much, much better than no mozfog. But it ain’t perfect.

I feel cleaner than when I dowse myself in aeroguard but mozfog very slightly better at repelling I felt. The real test will be when I take it fishing. My usual spot has a heap of midges basically all year round.

Imo this is as much as I would pay.

To put into context , exercise wise I was absolutely covered in sweat, and puffing pretty hard during some of the exercises. My gym area is under cover but quite damp all the time as it’s next to neighbours garden and fence.

    • Thanks for the report. Pity about the 3 bites.

Just wondering if it's possible to achieve zero bites with a topical insect repellent and using Mozfog.

      • I would say yes, but I wanted to avoid having to go hard on tropical insect repellent like I normally do. I usually go bushman’s or aeroguard but both sometimes make my breathing feel a bit funny before hard exercise

    • Did you just turn it on while you were in the room or did you turn it on before you entered? I need something that’s close to always on to put on my porch so when I go out I don’t get bitten. I’m happy to turn it on in the morning and off in the evenings

      • I ran it on full for a while as per the instructions, then swapped it over to interval mode. Interval mode is a puff every 3 seconds and claims 4 hr battery run. Hoping it’s just the first day and second day will be better tonight.
