Crumpler Idealist Backpack (Nightsky) $30 + $10 Delivery @ Crumpler

150

Seems like a decent price for this pretty basic Crumpler bag. Haven't seen it this cheap before.

Do people still use crumpler? Haven't seen it in ages!

I have been using my Dry red No.5 for over 10 years.

      Still holding strong.

Use it for work and travelling overseas.

They went off for a while but the original guys are back. We have crumpler bags that are still OK after 20 years of pretty heavy use.

Their website makes it seem like I'm having a stroke.

Hate it when they don't show you the inside of bags. It's like they know it will put people off.

After clicking on the deal I think I want a Koala costume instead of the backpack 🐨

Crumpler isn’t what it used to be. Have multiple bags of theirs. One of my suitcases - about 10 years old with their lifetime ‘till death do us part’ warranty. A wheel stopped spinning before a trip I went on last year.

7 or 8 years back I had the same exact issue, they posted me a new wheel straight away… to Germany while I was travelling, express from aus. Extreme example, but this kind of support was what their reputation was built on.

This time, after lots of back and forth from an extremely sarcastic and smug support contact, they tell me the wheels aren’t covered by their warranty. So I send them a copy of the email conversation from the last time when they sent me a wheel overseas, and they just said the warranty has changed retrospectively, even though when I purchased the bag they were covered. Best they offered was 15% off a new bag - so hardly the ‘til death do us part ‘ warranty the company reputation was built on.

To make matters worse, Crumpler being a very niche company - there’s no aftermarket wheels that fit the bag either. So I had to throw out my $500 Crumpler that I used maybe 5 times, and buy a new bag (this time from an international brand!)

they removed the lifetime warranty from their products a few years ago, was probably easy enough when they started up, i took backpack into their repair shop and they fixed stitching, but as stuff gets older and there is more of it it in the field it’s trickier and they can’t keep parts forever e.g specific wheels or clips or straps of a color or width, stuff might wear out. their warranty is still against faulty materials and workmanship “while you draw breath” but not wear and tear. Lifetime doesn’t mean for as long as you live, it’s the expected lifetime of a typical product of that type and a backpack might be 10 years if used regularly not 50 years if you bought when you were 20 and want fixed when you are seventy, still one of the better brands if you get it on special or used on ebay. Even supercheap toolpro tools says lifetime ….small print is 30 years replacement warranty.

      • @browneh: I still use my crumpler messenger bag bought back in 2003 no issues whatso ever. In 2015, I got a smaller version of my bag and it has nothing but issues. Zipper getting stuck, Velcro straps not holding, stiches coming apart and so on. Customer service is nearly non-existence as they don’t won’t to deal with the warranty and just want you to buy new bag instead.
It’s a pity that when crumpler bags where manufacture locally they lasted for ever, ever since they shifted the manufacturing to china around 2007, they quality control is all over the place. I will never buy another crumpler again until they get back the manufacturing home.

    • Yeah I've definitely noticed a drop in quality. Their newer stuff isn't holding up. My partner and another friend had issues with the handle of their backpacks ripping. However, they were just sent news instead of them being repaired. This was pre-Covid.

They seem to sell wheels although out of stock ATM, either of those fit?

      • Unfortunately not. The ones sold are for their newer bags - mostly hard cases. Mine is an old model ‘soft’ wheely bag.

        • Damn that's such a shame they should atleast support the spare parts.

    • They went into administration during Covid and the new owners want to make profit not reputation it seems

Not keep up their reputation? First time I have heard someone mention that since the buy back. The company was purchased back by Dave himself (one of the three original owners) and his daughter and has really spent some time and I can only imagine money in bringing the brand back to what it was. The workshop in Fitzroy is a bloody dream, if anything the quality is back to what my Complete Seed I purchased in about 2005-2007 again.

        • Well if you ever deal with their support email now, you’ll quickly know that they aren’t aiming to provide the support they used to. Very sarcastic and smug in all replies - never experienced anything like it when dealing with a company before. Plus they retrospectively changed the terms of their lifetime warranty on their older bags per my above post.

        • Have you read the comment in that article? Things might not be so idealistic

  • Gees they are using Franco Cozzo's image.. the dude just passed a month ago.

    OOS

  • If you just want a basic backpack, why wouldn't you go to Kmart? I get the appeal of a quality backpack, I have a really nice Dell one, but this seems like nothing special

    • Because we used to joke that Crumpler backpacks were so good that it never broke and the company went bankrupt because of that. Many of us still used such backpacks from literally 5-10 years ago and even further back. Plus they used to be the true local shops with factories here in Australia so a lot of us loved their products.

Can't say I feel the same way about a cheap backpack from Kmart.

  • It's OOS. I checked two nights ago and it was OOS then too.

  • They were selling these for $20 at their clearance earlier in the year. Even at the end of the event, there were dozens of these cos they were pretty ugly

  • No more barney rustle blanket!

I have 3 of their bags - all over 10 years.

the blanket is still going strong but the other two (I forget the name, they're both the same basic backpack in a different colour) haven't been the best quality manufacturing wise - couple of small tears, uneven padding in the straps etc. I have taken them to crumpler for repair which they have been happy to do, but they want to replace and they don't make the colours I have any more so just kept the bags.

  • Still using one of their backpack and sidebag up until now. So good that I don't even need to buy anything for the past 7 years…

  • Back in stock.
