[Pre Order] Ubiquiti UniFi Express UX Wi-Fi 6 Router $269 + Delivery ($0 C&C/in-store) @ PLE

650

Newly released Unifi Express, ETA for stock is 30 JAN 24. Scorptec who currently have it for $309 have just updated their website to indicates a change from 25 JAN 24, now to 01 FEB 24. Sounds like all resellers are awaiting the same ship!

This is cheaper than the previous Wireless1 deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/825645) which was $309.
Shipping varies, however as an example to central Melbourne it's free. Locations outside Melbourne CBD I've seen $17.

This a fantastic price for an item which is only just been released. Reviews seem to be overall very positive so long as you don't need more than 5 total Unifi devices adopted to the controller (note: 4 devices in addition to the Express itself). Perfect for small homes/offices. Price with PLE also reflects just under 20% price increase from the US store, which is great for Unifi devices.

Edit: same price at Wireless1 now as well (https://www.wireless1.com.au/ubiquiti-unifi-express-ux-power…) thanks to @Ozitravel.

Features:

Built-in WiFi 6 AP
140 m² (1,500 ft²) single-unit coverage
60+ connected WiFi devices
(1) GbE RJ45 WAN port
(1) GbE RJ45 LAN port to extend network
0.96" LCM status display
Manages up to four additional UniFi Network devices when operated as a gateway (5 total including the Express which is an AP)
Managed with UniFi Network 8.0.7 and later

    • AFAIK all Unifi AP's have Mesh capability with Wireless Backhaul, so you can probably do it with your existing setup just by moving your second AP closer to the Office (UDM Pro has an inbuilt AP like the UDM I'm assuming?)

  • I've currently got a TP Link Deco setup, could this be used in conjunction?

    • +1

It could be, but it would be a kludge. Either the Deco or the Unifi would need to run as the router, the other would be set up as access point(s) only.

      It's really not ideal.

If it's a range issue, you are probably better off just getting an extra mode for the Deco setup.

      • Yeah, i had a feeling that might be the case. Thanks for replying so quickly and providing the advice, mate!

  • bought

I think everyone is waiting for the same ship - including the IT company I own :)

Yes stock ETA is 30th in to the AUSTRALIAN DISTRIBUTOR IN VICTORIA

It will then trickle to other state's warehouses (hopefully unless sold out). Also based on back orders at those warehouses.

30th was always jumping the gun so not surprised they've altered their ETA's. When the container gets to Melbourne it has to get unloaded and processed first before first shipments go out to resellers so……

  • At this price point would it make more sense to buy a flagship router that’s natively supported by openwrt?

    • Kinda defeats the whole purpose of buying Ubiquiti gear and how it integrates with each other but whatever floats your boat I guess???

      • The integration makes allot of sense with higher end gear but I don’t think this fits that market. Seems more like an awesome home router/ap.

Guys with self hosted controllers - do your research befor jumping for this. The current firmware is biased towards UnifiOS based controller and not so much towads self hosted.

    • But if you have a self hosted UniFi, why would you need a UniFi express? Presumably you already have a gateway and a wireless AP.

  • So this still requires a Cloudkey I am guessing but can replace a USG, what problem is this solving apart from cramming in WiFi in the same box?

    • +1

Why does it require a CloudKey?

I think it runs UnifiOS with the Network application. CloudKey has storage and app for Protect I guess but if you're just after Networking minus some security features this is a great starting router. Cheap compared to the UDR if you don't need all those features.

BTW Huge shortage on UDR and UDM since November. The Australian Distributor doesn't even have an ETA at the moment :(

      • Just a Cloudkey for a Unifi controller, I self host mine in a docker container. I've never used Unifi products without a controller, how else do you adopt and manage the network? Login to each device and configure?

This is pretty cheap for a Unifi product, I built out my network before the dream machine and other products existed and haven't closely watched Ubiquiti products since.

The main small business / consumer setup was USG, Unifi Switch, and a couple unifi APs and somewhere to host the Unifi controller typically a cloud key.

I am a bit out of date, I'll go read up on UnifiOS

Aww :( their products are expensive enough already! Stock shortages don't seem that uncommon with Ubiquiti in my past experience

        • +1

Yeah these days the UDR, and UDM series all have the controller built in. This Express appears to have a cut down version built in (only the network application and some security features not available). It can also only integrate with 4 other Unifi devices.

Great for simple or smaller home though I think. Or renters who can't put Wired Access points on the ceilings.

          • +1

@Ramrunner: Thanks for the info, your comment basically sums up the new stuff in a few sentences! I feel caught up now :D

  • I'm just going to use it for meshing to extend my wifi signal, probably can do heaps more but that's all I need. Seems to have proper power cable which is good and doesn't need to be screwed into the ceiling.

  • Does anyone know if this can be used alongside a mesh system? Specifically I have tp link decos but need a wifi 6 router for vr low latency gameplay (:

    • Yes, it can be used as a standalone router (so modem -> UEx -> Decos) or as an additional WiFi6 Router/Access point.

  • Is this also a modem or just a router?

    • +1

      Router/Access point. no modem.

    • With NBN you do not need modem, NBN box is a modem.

      • +1

        Not quite right.

FttN NBN requires a modem. (Fibre to the Node is vDSL).

        • +2

Well, my knowledge of NBN is limited. Thank you for correcting me.

          • @SJ50: All good - all the other NBN technologies usually have a NTD (Network Termination Device) such as Fixed Wireless and Fibre to the Premises which has a straight Ethernet connector that goes directly into the router so you were mostly right :)

        • Thanks this is what I came here for, upgrading from FTC to ftp

  • +1

i just ordered directly from Unifi web site in the US and freight forward works out $10 cheaper plus got some other unify goodies for cheaper. and it will be here before the time ozzy gets theirs

    • Nice!! What freight forward company? It's USD $149 + $10 shipping from the Unifi web store (AUD $242 with no international fees). So you would have to get the shipping to less than AUD $27 for it to come out equal. From a quick look at hopshopgo as an example forwarder it would be USD ~$40. You got freight forward shipping for less than AUD $17?

      • +2

comgateway they give you $10 USD off your shipping also using wise gets you better exchange rates.

        • Be careful with that. I had an older AC-PRO ordered from the US which promptly refused to work when it realised it was no longer in North America.

I think the FCC has some weird requirement about gear for NA not broadcasting in other regulatory regimes. This is totally ignored by most consumer gear, but it's been reported with some earlier Google mesh gear and Unifi.

I have no idea if this is still a 'feature' of Unifi equipment.

My current enterprise gear has a very distinct demarc between NA equipment and rest of world gear. There are workarounds to get the NA gear working elsewhere, but it's a bit of a kludge.

          • @rumblytangara: Interesting, Never had that issue before. Considering you can change countries to broadcast correct frequency. I have a couple of U6-pros (au version) and can still broadcast on signals you're not meant to if you wanted to.

            • @memez: I think this is a US-specific thing, from what I have read up on regarding Unifi and Ruckus, which are the two brands I've used.

For Ruckus, they have US models which don't play happy outside north america (there is a known workaround), and WW-serialed models which will work anywhere in the world. The WW models cost more, and like you I can set them to use whatever frequencies I want.

I imagine that the same might be for Unifi gear, but as I ditched that years ago I never looked into it again after my AC Pro decided to go on strike. I posted it to a friend in the US and he's still using it.

I would be wary of any US-sourced corporate wifi gear and would want to confirm via some searching that it would work outside North America before buying.

  • Still waiting for mine to arrive

  • wireless1 has update shipping date to 8Feb.

    • The Australian Distributor has updated their landing in to Melbourne to the 8th as well.

Unless Wireless1 buys off Ubiquiti directly (I actually think they do) it could even be after that date as stock is allocated around Australia.

  • Wireless1 has now updated their ETA to February 15.

    • +1

Ours are still in Transit. Scanned 02:38 apparently. They were sent on Thursday. We're in WA.

Maybe they ran out and had to re-order? They're definitely in Australia now.

  • +1

PLE website is now showing the ETA as 27 Feb. Haven't received any further emails though to advise of any other delays.

  • Did anyone get their stock?

    • I got mine from Wireless1, 2 days ago.

  • We ran out of our pre-orders, and all warehouses are empty again of this item except for Melbourne where there are still 20+ units available as of right now.

    • Who's this? PLE or Wireless1?

      • +1

Neither. I run a small company in WA who buy directly frrom the official Australian Ubiquiti distributor. This is all just FYI. Every reseller would be in the same boat unless they have a direct account with Ubiquiti themselves, or gray import.

        • +1

          Thanks for the heads up!

I received my Unifi Express from Wireless1 yesterday.

However, this unit has a few issues when used as an Access Point. When testing at home on a self-hosted system, I had a lot of trouble in getting it to adopt. It was very, very slow to initialise and I just kept getting "Failed to adopt". After multiple efforts using both the App and the PC console, I did eventually get it to show up, but the screen on the Express continually showed "Getting Ready". Also, any restart would require re-adopting.

There was no issue if setting up as a stand-alone unit.

This appears to be a very common issues as shown in multiple blogs online. It obviously needs a firmware upgrade to fix which I understand Ubiquiti are working on.

    • Thanks for the heads up with your experience. Much appreciated.

This will likely be fixed with a firmware update, but sad it was able to ship in this state. I think they may have rushed these out a bit is the feeling I'm getting. Maybe because there are no UDRs to be found anywhere?

  • +1

    mine is on the way!

  • Firmware upgrade V3.2.5 just released.
There are still some issues such as incorrect screen labels, but it seems it is adopting a little smoother albeit still quite slow. The speed ramping issue mentioned elsewhere does seem to have been fixed.

  • UDM Dream Machine when trying to adopt:

You have exceeded the maximum number of WiFi networks.

    I'm stuck..

    • Ok, had to remove a network as I had too many.
But when I move the express / unplug it and plug it back in why do I need to keep adopting it?
Can't I adopt this thing for good and turn on / off without needing to adopt each time?

      • You're not the only one with this issue.

Ozitravel above says the same thing. Apart from making sure you have the latest firmware - this could be a bug?

        https://community.ui.com/questions/Express-adoption-failed/7…

        • +1

Also poor reach for it to be used as AP.
Placed it two rooms apart and can't adopt.
Can adopt however ok if it sits next to UDM…duh!

          • @MrBillions: Can you move it once it's adopted or does it then lose it's configuration again?

I haven't had any complaints from our customers yet but thinking I'm about to get a lot of phone calls :(

            • +1

@Ramrunner: yes that works and it will adopt/connect by itself once plugged in other area.
However connection/mesh/extension is really bad and well below what I was expecting. barely 10meters and kids complain about slow speed when connected to express.
              I did do a firmware/software update.

              • @MrBillions: Wow just watched a webinar brief on the device from the distributor and they say it's supposed to be good for 140m square.

I won't stock up on these then till all that crap is sorted. Thanks for letting me know.

  • Getting really poor mesh results…even if in room next door. Not happy. Doesn't seem to have sufficient reach…
