[Pre Order] Ubiquiti UniFi Express UX $309 Delivered (Will Be $352) @ Wireless 1

110

Stock should be hitting stores approx. Jan 25th. Wireless1 has discounted it by $43.00, bringing it in line with their UXG-Lite pricing but with a different feature set that (I feel) targets small homes better.

I'm getting one for my parents to replace their ISPs modem. They're already using Unifi Access Points and I'd like to replace their aging UAP-Lite with this to upgrade them to Wifi 6. It'll also make remote troubleshooting possible - no 70 minute drive to diagnose slow internet 🙂

Features
  • Runs Unifi Network Application
  • Built-in WiF6 (2x2 MIMO)
    • Need more WiFi coverage? No problem - simply power on another UniFi Express and seamlessly mesh it to the gateway UniFi Express for effortless coverage expansion.
  • 140 m² (1,500 ft²) single-unit coverage
  • 60+ connected WiFi devices
  • (1) GbE RJ45 WAN port
  • (1) GbE RJ45 LAN port to extend network
  • 0.96" LCM status display
Limitations
  • You can only manage four UniFi devices from the UniFi Express
  • Suspicious Activity features (also known as IDS/IPS) are not available on UniFi Express.
  • Only one LAN port - you're probably going to need a switch

I was expecting at least WiFi 6E

Unifi just released their wifi 7 product, so I think there will be a new model soon.

    • Was going to ask Rep too. When you getting the u7-pro in? Know it was just released.
edit: wasn't posted by rep but maybe they'll chime in.

      • Early-Mid March is current ETA

This device has hardly launched, seeing how slow Unifi are with some things they could take a while to update this with 7.

    • Now I need to invest $$$$ for a 2.5G switch if I want 6E or 7 AP lol
I think I will stay with my current gigabit config for my house.

      • Same. Though just in case people want to know, you can run it off gigabit as it will negotiate that. Just obviously won't get full speed.

This is amazing for a 'turn key' shiny product but it's a $149USD Item, bring that to Australia (AT RETAIL) it's 221.86AUD, add on GST and you're around $250 AUD retail. Surely an importer/reseller in Australia buying them at wholesale. I get there is some shipping and logstics but these would also be incurred to get them to US Customers for the $149.

Not to mention the limit of 4 devices and the lower feature set. One of them "mini PC' routers for ~$200 offer greater router features. This is quite a nice device. Maybe it'll suit a person in a 1 bed unit or something with FTTP/HFC Connections?

Ubiquiti does this with all of their devices. Good pricing in the US and then a massive “Aussie tax” price jack by the time it lands here.

On top of that they don’t have much of a support presence here either despite us paying many times more than the yanks.

The device itself is good though. The limit of 4 devices is referring to APs not actual connected devices.

The limit of 4 devices is referring to APs not actual connected devices.

Not quite - it’s not APs but Unifi devices. A Unifi switch like the USW-FLEX-Mini will take up one of those slots as well.

A managed switch is overkill for my parent’s setup so I’m using the TP-Link Switch deal from the other day.

    • I am tempted by this device, but less so by the local pricing, with ever retailer here taking the piss.

A quick look suggests it'd cost US$ 28 to ship to Australia using Comgateway, making it US$ 177 landed. Add 10% GST on the purchase price and you're at US$ 192, or AUD 286.

Do you have U7 Pro preorder?

Router with Wifi is so 2020. The most cost efficient setup in 2024:
    - Buy Mini PC with 2xRJ45
    - Install OpnSense
    - Connect Wireless AP in bridge mode
    - Install docker on mini PC and thank me later

If budget is your main priority, then yes, OpnSense/PfSense are the way to go.

In my case, my parents are already half-way into the Unifi ecosystem and I wanted it to self-update. OPNSense will let you do this but automatic major version upgrades aren't recommended. Updating a docker container generally requires you to pull down a new image and restart the container - there's no way my parents are going to do that (even if I use a GUI for Docker like Portainer) and life is too short for me to be doing that for them on the regular.

    • +2

The average person is not going to do this. You think about how many people struggle with just plugging in the ISP router and getting that working and now you want them to install OpnSense? lol

    • Yeah no thanks most people will take hours just to do this.

  • Is there much difference between this and the UDR?

    • +4
      • UDR has a built-in switch (no need for external switch)
      • UDR supports more than four Unifi devices simultaneously
      • UDR supports 2 Unifi applications running (Network + one other app e.g. Talk or Protect). UX supports only Network Application
        • UDR has 128GB SSD inbuilt and SD card slot for video storage, can be used if you run Protect on it
      • UDR can't support gigabit WAN connection (expect approx 700mbps)
      • UDR has 2 POE ports
      • UX can be powered by POE (I think I'm wrong on this one)

This is will work great in replacing my Docked Unifi Controller. Love the form factor and the integrated AP as well.

Why would anyone buy this old tech? Wifi 7 is already out so this is two generations old.

    • If you don't need the Wifi it's a pretty decent router. Or you have an old USG and some Unifi APs this would be a good option.

    • +1

Most of your client devices are probably still two generations behind Wifi 6, so Wifi 7 will not be relevant for several years. Except maybe your phone.
And if you haven't got a 2.5 Gb or 10 Gb network (and internet) Wifi 7 seems a bit overkill.

When a significant portion of the NBN connections are opting for 100 or less plans…

  • Sorry, is this a router/modem/? Detail in the heading if it is for the uninitiated.

    • +1

It's not a modem, but it has a router, gateway, network controller and wireless access point built in.

      • Thank you.
