Henson Shaving AL13 & AL13-M Safety Razor $104.96 Delivered @ Oz Hair and Beauty

120
MISSYOU15

My husband had this on his wishlist, so I nabbed one for his upcoming birthday.

Admittedly, I do not know much about shaving but from the limited Googling I’ve done, these razors seem to have a bit of a cult following. Perhaps someone here can vouch for these razors (and validate my purchase at the same time, ha)?

Regular price in AU seems to be $150ish.

Use the promo code MISSYOU15 to get $15 off the already discounted price.

Shopback currently has 10.5% cashback - might not pay out due to the promo code but you have nothing to lose in trying.

My birthday is coming up too

  • Apparently not the closest shave but good for sensitive skin and ingrown hairs

You're pretty spot on with what you're saying.

Good for a beginner but you'd definitely end up looking for something different once you're comfortable using a DE safety razor.

    • Its so personal razors. I have the Al13 and the titanium version, use feather blades. Gives me the smoothest and closest of my 5 razors, but I use it for daily stubble, not beards. Also very forgiving when I am in a hurry and go too fast.

      • Do you have any recommendations on products to use? I have seen it mentioned a couple of times that canned shaving foam isn’t ideal for safety razors.

Take into account I'm very basic, no beard just daily stubble and very time poor in the mornings.
So no brush/lather, just shaving cream for lubrication and go.

I've used the Proraso cream for the last 2 years, still 1/3 of the 500ml left!

Had some canned Gilette shaving foam, didn't like it, too thin/watery.

Blades wise I have settled on Feather as its one of the sharpest blades, for ME, the mildness of the Henson razor + almost impossible to get nicks and the sharpness of the feather gives me baby smooth skin with 2-3 passes. Used to use the much cheaper Astra blades, pretty good too.

I've just looked at the Henson site. Mine are the older models, the AL13 was available in 3 aggression levels then. The Ti22 still has 3 levels, but the AL13 is now a ? medium.

Take your pick for a decent quality safety razor on aliexpress between $6-$20.

Just a quick edit to note for people to buy good quality blades. I like feather brand.

Dont buy a cheapo razor or blades.

Edwin jagger de89 or equivalent and astra greens are what most people start with

      • Don’t go cheap on blades but don’t go spending 100 bucks on your first safety razor either. Most clones get about 85% of the result of a top shelf razor. If you prefer the shave you get then move up.

        • You have any link for good blades?

@nahkk: Feather blades I find are the best for quality and longevity. There are plenty of places to buy them from but they last so long I only need to buy them infrequently, so unsure where the best deals are. I am also unsure as of late if there are people selling counterfeit ones or not so, sometimes better to source from reputable sellers.

If you’re new to safety razors, the packet for blades has a slot on the back to dispose of them also. Make sure you use it to keep your household and refuse service workers safe.

            • @Doogan: Thank you. I did not know about the disposal trick.

The problem is those chinesium razors are going to be something like chrome plated steel (which can chip off then corrode), instead of solid anodised aluminium. They will also be cast from a mold, not precision computer milled from a solid block (so one part of the blade could be sticking out more than the other).

Just got to make sure you don't accidently bang the aluminium on the tap or something because it isn't the strongest metal, but I haven't had any problem with it yet. I also put some mineral oil in the threads every time I change blades (I just use basic baby oil).

        I just grow a beard.

    • Just got my aliexpress safety razor which cost USD 1.07 delivered - very satisfied. Replaced my old one from ebay - the thread on the shaft wore out after 5 years; that one cost $AU 1.00

If you haven't seen it, there is some insight here from a local chap who has bought, used and reviewed literally hundreds of razors of all shape, size and price

I have quite the collection of DE safety razors.

Can confirm this one is okay but he won't get the closest of shaves.

I can highly recommend this for around the same price, shop around though.

It's nice and heavy in hand and adjusting the cut / closeness is simple.

I would definitely stay away from the Chinese imports, I have a few decent ones but the majority are out of alignment.

    Best of luck to you.

    • I was waiting for someone to share this.

Can someone with more experience explain how this $105 handle is better than the Gillette one?

    • +1

I have this and I'm happy with it. I've never really looked into the world of safety razors, I genuinely thought they all did the same thing. Can you share what benefits an advanced razor would have over this one? Genuinely curious.

    • Same. I am pretty happy with it.

  • I use feather blades in my feather razor, AS D2.

    Great investment.
