ok have fun with low quality streams you will never own

  • Thanks for sharing Kevin. big fan 👍

  • +1

Barbie 4k UHD for under $30 and Oppenheimer for $32 seems like a good deal for newish release.

    • +7

Was 30% off last sale…Probably wait for them to be 2 for $40 soon.

      • +2

Buy 1 get 1 free also usually comes by each year at the end of May for those that can hold out.

    • +1

I'm pretty sure new movies have been about $30 since the days of VHS

  • Is Titanic available in 4K? Only available in US afaik,
Also was wondering for the other James Cameron movies, they are non existent at JB.

    • +5

Disney owns Fox content now, and Disney is no longer releasing Blu-rays in Australia. Not to worry, 4K doesn't have region coding so import away. Titanic is out, Aliens and True Lies (which never made it on regular Blu-ray) hit 4K in March 👍

      • Ooh aliens and true lies coming to 4k nice. Was wondering if the rest of Aliens series would be stuck on BR only. I doubt anything beyond Aliens will get the treatment though lol.
I saw something about the Abyss (I've never seen it, heard good things!) Being cancelled on 4k? Or maybe just in the UK?

        • +1

True Lies, less so Aliens getting some poor reviews for the A.I upscaling used.

        • +1

The Abyss is a spectacular movie - but yes it's been cancelled in the UK due to legislation surrounding showing animals in distress (there is a rat in the movie which is temporarily inconvenienced). It will still be getting released in the states.

          • @mingofmongo: Did they canceled Apocalypse Now as well

          • @mingofmongo: Saw the new 4K version of The Abyss in the cinema recently (limited run, 1 night only thing for some reason) and it was spectacular. Only thing I don't get is the new cover art with Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio looking like a lifeless waxwork .. ugggh.

            • @narcoleptic-haze: It's cool when they do that, but would be better if they did a longer run! I saw Aliens at IMAX a few years ago that was awesome. Dunno which version it was though

        • Aliens is apparently absolutely terrible in the 4k release.

    • Got my UK version from rarewaves as US version doesn't include standard blu-ray. The 4k is amazing, watched it few weeks ago

    • Bought this with Avatar Special Eds along with some other 4K - in the US last week.
      The 4K is AMAZING!

  • Ah damn I ordered a few days ago and it shipped. Does anyone know if I can return online orders in store to make a new purchase? Live chat is closed right now too. Or whether I can negotiate credit for the difference?

    • +2

Idk if anyone else has had better luck, when I hit up chat they said because it was like an unannounced promotion or something that they wouldn't make up the difference for me.

I just dropped $140 on stuff 2 days ago as well, it's annoying. You should be able to take back to store for refund and then re-buy I guess, if you can be bothered. I'm just gonna eat the difference and be surly for a few min lol.

      • I didn't realize the discounts would stack over their summer clearance. Ah so they wouldn't make up the difference.

Yeah I bought a few things and not feeling so good. So it's possible to return online orders in store?

        • +2

Yes it’s possible to return online orders in store. The refund takes a few days.

Since you’re going you might as well reorder whatever you’re returning and click and collect it (if they have it in stock).

      • +1

I got lucky and got the small differemce refunded! But live chat took forever and kept getting kicked out so not sure if it was worth the time and effort.

    • +1

i got a refund for price difference for a game that I got online, didn't have to return it or go into the store, just did it online via chat, took 5mins

      • What did you say to them on the chat? I was thinking about trying my luck.

        • +1

@PaisleyPaige just said, hey i got this game 7 days ago and it got $40 cheaper since then, is it possible to get a refund of the difference, and they said yes, it was easy af.

  • Cheapest 4K bluray player to play these? Or is it better value to purchase a PS5

    • +21

      Panasonic dp-ub820. Thank me later.

      • +5

Definitely not the cheapest…but is the best

        • +4

Pay once, don't pay three or four times.
I have PS5 and XSX, this player blows them out of the water.

          • @Damonator84: how is it better at playing discs? I get the PS5 is a little bit of a faff but it costs as much!

            • +2

@JackFrost: Dolby Vision, tone mapping per display type, no judder, lagging or skips, no issue with 100gb discs

              • @Faro: Other than Dolby Vision I've never had any of those issues playing UHDs with an XBox One X. To the contrary, the interface etc is much snappier than a standard player (which I also have).

                • @caitsith01: I had weird judders watching random blu-rays on my one x and then unfixable stutters on the 4k of Wall-e which prompted me to look at the ub820

      • +1

Is there a big enough difference between DP-UB820 and DP-UB450GN? the 450GN is currently on sale for $299 at JB and the 820 is $619. I'm not sure if i can justify the extra $320…

Is the 450GN good enough if i just want Dolby Vision video play back? currently using the PS5 and it looks good enough for my untrained eye, obviously without DV playback.

        • +4

I have the 450GN it does amazing, it’s no frills, no streaming apps (smart tv or smart stick can solve this) it has never missed a heartbeat. Image and sound is great. It does the job, crispy 4K in dv or hdr10+

          • @NoisyMiner: I've always heard good things about the Panny players (and BR and DVD and VCRs before that lol, parents used to have a pana VCR it was awesome)

So now I remember what people say about the Xbox, it doesn't do Dolby vision right? I have a 65"Lg something or other, UHD but idk specs, it's like 5 years old. Would I notice a difference via a standalone player I wonder.

            • @Jdrizzle: Funny thing Xbox does DV in the games, but will not for movies. It really depends if the Blu-ray has Dolby vision, otherwise I would say minimal difference for standard HDR. It’s up to you if you need Dolby vision and if your TV can do it, check the specs.

        • Yes works great and I've chipped mine to play all region DVD, Blu-ray and even some rare 4k region locked discs.

          • @FeZZa21: Oooh, how easy is it to chip? I still have an old Toshiba bdx1300ky kicking around for my handful of Region A discs.

Edit never mind, my tv doesn't support Dolby vision apparently lol, will update the 4k player when I update the tv in the distant future

            • @Jdrizzle: Not too difficult with a fine soldering iron. Rattlebyte make their mod chips for heaps of players, check their website

          • @FeZZa21: Also, note that you can DVD Region unlock for free by taking it to an Authorised Service Agent (https://eng-au.faq.panasonic.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/215….), and 4K is almost always region free. The problem is BluRays which aren't region B.

            • @bbbtuba: They do not remove the region lock for blu-ray but will only do it for dvd? I am interested but also have a region free dvd player connected.

          • @FeZZa21: Does it play any blu-ray region with rattlebyte mod?

        • +1

The 820 has more video processing and upscaling magic, but most TVs have all that anyway these days. The 820 is great for projectors and apparently the DV profile is not as accurate on it vs the 450 though.

        • +1

I've had a 450GN for over a year and it's great for that budget gap for people who don't want to spend the extra for a 820 with all the bells and whistles. It works with Dolby vision and hdr10+. When I first got it I had an issue with one disc but as soon as I was able to update the firmware I have been issue free. For the people who don't necessarily look for all the really small details it's a perfect player imo.

      • exactly what i wanted to hear

      • Dannng not cheap!

      • +1

Can't agree more. This. Not the cheapest but worth every cent of the extra that you will pay for this!

    • +1

Depends if you play games I guess. I've got an Xbox Series X, I see comments from video/audio heads saying that they are lacking in features… (And ps5) but I'm not sure what features they mean.. I'm sure a standalone does a better job, but I'm not sure where or if I'd notice it lol. The only problem I had is needing a HDMI splitter because I have the X hooked up through an Elgato streaming/recording thing which blocks Blu rays from playing… Just an extra device in my cord jungle.

If you want cheap cheap you could prob find an Xbox One S (Not series S lol) for like $100-150, they play 4k as well.

      • I use a Series X too, but by god is the drive in that thing loud

      • It's not just 'features', it's Dolby Vision which is one of the main reasons to care about UHD discs. It can do Dolby Vision for streaming but not from a disc because Microsoft decided to put a less capable drive in it.

    • +1

Do you have a decent TV and/or sound set-up?
That tends to be the biggest factor as to how much you should spend on the 4K player.
(Eg, Do HDR10, Dolby vision or Atmos matter to you)

      • Yep, decent telly, Dolby vision, and almost Atmos. Just hard to justify when I don't have many Blu-rays.

        • +1

i was the same, so i prioritised getting my go-to classics, something worth rewatching, and not being upset when streaming platforms change their library.

What I can tell you, the sound quality on BR beats streaming anytime.

    • cheapest would probably be a secondhand xbox one s. Can pick one up for $150 pretty much any day of the week, plus $20 for a remote

    • Panasonic ub450

  • Cheapest one I can think of is the Panasonic DP-UB150GN-K. Currently $269 from a few places.

    • +3

No Dolby vision but, which is the whole point of getting a standalone player vs using a Xbox/ps5 etc

  • So looks like it is true Disney exiting out 4k blurays in Australia, I haven't seen any announcement for The Marvels

    • +3

It was announced last year that Disney weren’t going to release any more physical media after Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

      • Yes kinda what I said and to be clear, Disney blurays exiting only in Australia (as I know of). Zavvi accepting pre-orders of The Marvels 4k steelbook

  • i am curious when you get these discs now a days its not a download right? you can literally just run the disc like the old days?

    • Correct.

      • it doesn't' ask for internet access to run it? or activate it or anything like that?

        • +3

          nope.

  • +2

Anyone know where all the 4K physical copies of Avatar 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3 went?

    • They all got sent back to supplier to be destroyed coz Disney hates Australia so they can push subscriptions for Disney +

    • +1

Sold out due to FOMO is the more likely explanation. I got one of the "last" guardians 3 copies about a month before Christmas

      • +1

FOMO is real in the physical media world.

      • A bit crappy disney stopped selling physical media here. Now we would need to pay higher prices to get overseas versions.

  • +1

Best to look up the title on bluray.com before buying anything.

Some of these, like the ironman collection $32 really don't look any better than they do on BD.
