Goldair 2kW 7000BTU Portable Air Conditioner $250 (rrp $429) C&C/ in-Store Only @ Target

130

With the temperature too hot to handle in Melbourne and our portable air conditioner breaking down yesterday, I started to scan for a cheap one.

Found this one:
Goldair 2kW 7000BTU Portable Air Conditioner
GCPAC07
(details on Target website)

P.S. Although I initially ordered for C&C, I actually bought another different model as well which was OOS online and in store, but actually found the last one in store at Sunbury. Might pay to check it out in your local Store as well.

7000BTU wont do much with a portable - need at least 12000BTU for an average bedroom to feel effective on a classic 40c summer scorcher
    Reviews tell the story

    • Yeah nah depends on the house.

I’ve got a 7000btu Carson unit, paid about $290 delivered on ebay from memory. Yesterday was approx 37-38 and I had the bedroom nice enough to still have a blanket on.

I use a winter puffer jacket (ozb deal) to insulate the pipe that goes outside.

If you’re in a fibro house with the sun on the walls then you might have an issue, but anything relatively shaded and brick should do fine.

      • Have one of those Carson ones too but the 9000BTU model
Brings the temperature down but its more the cool air blowing effect which feels good but as soon as you switch it off you realize the room is still warm. It does not keep up on 40c days.. Nothing like a split or window unit
It makes it 5-10c cooler but it has never reached the set temperature and switched off. IE set for 21c
So yeah does something but I wouldn't really rate it
What you said about covering the exit pipe with some insulation is a good idea

      • Yeah nah all portable aircons are garbage since they only use 1 hose and takes in air from the room it's trying to cool.
im in a brick house and even my $1200 6KW 20000 BTU portable wouldnt cool more than a few degrees in 40c+ heat in my bedroom. it feels great if it's facing you but when it's not it's obvious it aint doing much to actually cool the room.

    • 12,000 BTU's of raw cooling power!………….zzzzziiiiiip..Installed!

  • This is the least efficient concept of an aircon.

    Rubbish. These cause more humidity

  • Tried one of these temporarily while waiting for an aircon install. The noise to cooling ratio is horrendous, but it made a couple of hot nights slightly cooler.

  • Portable aircon is really not so portable. Only use it if you have no other resorts.
