Booking Flights to Japan for Autumn 2024

Hi fellow Ozbargainers, I need some insight on booking flights for my Japan trip late November 2024.

Generally, I heard that it is good to book flights early, as prices will increase the longer you wait. However, it seems that good deals have come out for flights around March - Sep such as this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/828464

It seems that not a lot of the deals to Japan here include November flights yet, apart from this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/828660. Sadly, the free returns did not line up with our preferred travel dates.

My question is, would it be better to book our flights as early as possible (i.e., now) or hope for a deal as good as those mentioned above will pop up in the near future for our preferred travel dates at November 2024?

Just set up an alert on Google flights. When it hits your desired price, buy.

I did November last year and I booked in April. There were quite a few deals then.

    • How was November? I have a relative living in Japan and they said summer pretty much extended through last year and the autumn colours were very short.

      • Wife and I were there from about 24/9-8/10 last year (second time to JP in Autumn); went to Sapporo hoping to get some early momiji action but it was almost entirely absent, with some days around 25 degrees. (for reference, our first Autumn visit to Nikko across the same time in 2016 delivered a good amount of autumn colours for that early in the season). So going off that short sample, it probably felt like a warm and short Autumn/Indian summer for the locals, compared to normal.

That's a difficult one. There are many sales to Japan right now. If you hold out you risk no sales over your dates and could be stung with higher ticket prices by not booking now, but on the other hand, if you book now, you could miss out on cheaper fares if sales extend to your preferred dates. Whichever option you choose, it will be a gamble.

Have you been to Japan before? It's an amazing country. It is well run, safe and the people are the friendliest that you will ever meet. I say you bite the bullet and book tickets now. That way you don't have to stress about watching out for a sale every other day and have the certainty of dates. Just be sure to turn off any flight alerts you have set up in case a sale fare does come up.

Well worth waiting: Japan is a volcanic archipelago.
The longer you wait the larger Japan grows, especially in the south.

  • How do you guys book attractions and train travels within japan ? Do you book in advance before travel? Is there any all-in-one app to book train tickets and attractions?
