Ken Hom Classic Wok 10 Piece Set

The wok is made of carbon steel, the description says "non-stick" but I believe this would be "pre-seasoned" carbon steel.

Sold as a set of 31 cm carbon steel wok, lid , cooking chopsticks, wood turner, steel turner, and 4 pairs of eating chopsticks.

I reckon you're right that it's 'factory preseasoned' (aka it won't rust in transit BUT you need to season a LOT more yourself to make usable!) and not non-stick coated. My basis for this is that many of the reviews on Amazon for it have folks complaining that it rusts etc:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Ken-Hom-Wok-31CM-Pieces/dp/B084XRT…

Pretty crappy advertising by the sellers/makers as non-stick is regarded as coated (PTFE etc) and seasoned carbon steel is completely different. You can see why folks got mislead which would be rather annoying.

Suffice to say season carbon steel is vastly superior for any decent home cooks but takes a lil knowledge and extra effort but will reward you many times over with superior results.

    • Good pick. Crappy advertising/information is a classic Costco thing to do. Even in store, the employees don't know much about several products.. it's all treated as "commodity".

Nonetheless, I felt this is a good value overall for $50

      • If you feel hard done by, you can always return it.

      • Why should Costco employees know anything about the products?

      • To be fair to Costco, I don't think this is their fault - as near identical blurb on the product is used wherever it's listed e.g the Amazon one - IMHO the distributor for the product is providing this to the sellers of their item and giving info that is poorly worded & one might even say misleading.

This is pretty daft as it's leading to bad reviews on the product by folks who want & think it's 'non-stick' (PTFE/teflon coated) when it's not. Damaging the product's market prescence etc for others that view it when this isnt a product fault but just poor sales listings.

    • is this equal safety to using cast iron skillet? Will seasoned carbon steel not give me cancer?

im sure that it's all well-documented on the the mysterious 10th piece item of the set (the instruction leaflet!)

  • After a lot of research I ended up getting the Yosukata black carbon wok from Amazon. Absolutely love it. Not cheap, but after correct seasoning (which they provide very detailed guides on) it is brilliantly non stick.

  • These woks rust pike crazy if u don't keep it seasoned

  • Anyone got any tips for keeping a wok well seasoned? I got one from Aldi that has done well and doesn't look even remotely close to rusting fwiw

  • Flat bottom - no thanks.

I have woks over 30 years old from asian cookery/grocery stores and you do not need to pay $50.00 although I will concede these days the quality is often not quite what it was re handle attachment…

    • The Yosukata black carbon wok someone mentioned is flat too. What's wrong with flat?

      • Traditional wok is not flat.
        Perhaps that is why.

      • Flat bottom isn't very nice for aggressive tossing on the pan.

Perfectly fine if you don't cook like that, but where's the fun in that? It's a wok

Flat bottom is for cooks with electric stovetops. Asian grocery store carbon steel wok costs $15 so I don't rate the lid/charn/chopsticks being $35 value.
