amaysim Are Increasing $10 Monthly Plan to $15

Heads up, I just received an email from Amaysim, saying they are increasing their old $10/28 days plan to $15. Note this isn't a current plan, they stopped selling it a while back, but plenty of people are still on it.

So for everyone who was hoping their plan had been "grandfathered" forever, as I was, sorry to bring the bad news.

Here's the full text of the email:

Russ,

We are always looking to deliver exceptional value for our customers and are continually evolving to bring you the best of our service. From time to time, this means making changes to our plans.

On your next renewal date after 22 February (or the one after that, based on our system timings), your $10 plan will automatically change to $15 with 18GB of data ongoing. That's an additional 14GB more! With this change comes a price increase of $5 a renewal.

You'll Get More Data

Once your plan has upgraded, you'll get 14GB more than your current plan!

— End of email —

So for anyone who doesn't need the extra data, it may be time to move to a different provider.

Alternative providers I've found so far, with unlimited calls+SMS+MMS, at $10/month or less:

  • $10/month with Dodo Mobile, with 2GB of data, on the Optus network.

  • $9.90/month with FlipConnect, with 3GB of data, on the Optus network.

  • $120/year (=$10/month) with Kogan Mobile's "small" 365-day plan, with 120GB of data (=10GB/month), on the Vodafone network.

  • $9.90/month with CMobile on their smallest "Red" plan, with 1GB of data, on the Vodafone network. Introductory discount of $2/mth (=$7.90) for 6 mths.

There are probably other providers and plans, if you list them below, please mention if the pricing is an introductory offer, and give the ongoing price.

Same with woolworths. My $20 plan is now going up to $25, but comes with another 10 gig so I'm happy

    • +1

My family members barely use any data, so the data increase is useless for me. Hence why I'm shopping for a new plan.

Could you be getting an even-better $25 plan with another provider? It's worthwhile to have a look. Note that the "mobile plan comparison" websites appear to only show you sponsored results, I've found plans before that weren't even listed on most of the comparison sites. And for the comparison sites that did list the plans I had found, somehow they "accidentally" got mis-listed when you sorted the plans in order of monthly price.

      • +1

Probably, but I need to be on the telstra network.
I also like the 10% off woolies shop once a month that almost covers the cost of the plan.

        • How is WW near you? Where I live, WW on average is more expensive than Coles, not sure if the discount would bring the pricing back to level.

Or is WW the only practical choice for you?

          • +1

@Russ: Yes, WW is the practical choice. Coles and aldi are 20 mins away. Woolies is less than 5 mins.
I feel the difference in price is marginal. I only buy what's on special at woolies and adapt my meal plan to suit.

The old $10 belong plan is now $19 🫤

  • I got the same email, any other providers doing a $10 plan? I don't need much data.

    • $99/yr here for at least a year

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/828499

    • Circles.Life = $10pm.

      • That must be a grandfathered plan, cheapest on their website is $15pm.

    • any other providers doing a $10 plan?

I listed three in the deal, see above.

Edit: found another one. Now four plans at $10/month or less.

If data isn't a requirement, Amaysim have a $60/yr unlimited calls and sms plan. Only shows if you're already on Amaysim.

    • Didn't see that. But these days some data is probably necessary.

If people complain to Amaysim they might offer Unlimited 4GB/$30 per 3mts plan.

      • +1

You can add 1gb of data for $10 on the $60/yr talk n text plan anytime.

        • You can add 1gb of data for $10

That sounds good, how quickly does the data expire? One month after purchase?

          • +1

@Russ: It expires with your existing unlimited plan. So whenever your 1yr is up.

      • +1

But these days some data is probably necessary.

If your data usage is minimal, also consider a second SIM or eSIM just for data. For example, Aldi's PAYG plan has data at 6c/MB, and the effective minimum annual fee is $15 (their smallest recharge, and recharges last 365 days).

Also, since the ALDI PAYG plan uses the Telstra network, you may be able to set your "standard" SIM to redirect incoming calls to your ALDI SIM's phone number, if you're out of range of your standard network. All the coverage advantages of Telstra, without the huge price.

        • "may be able to set your "standard" SIM to redirect incoming calls to your ALDI SIM's phone number"

          Didn't know this is possible.

          • +1

@JH100: It's not available on all plans and with all providers, but Amaysim have it listed here: https://www.amaysim.com.au/help/mobile/manage-account/manage…

Costs 35c/minute to receive the forwarded call though, so perhaps say "This is a noisy line, can I ring you back?", and then ring them back on the Aldi SIM as it's cheaper. Set your Aldi SIM to block your outgoing caller id.

          • Telstra wholesale
      • If people complain to Amaysim they might offer Unlimited 4GB/$30 per 3mts plan.

They did exactly that, except it's 90 days instead of three months, see ElvisLa's comment below.

Looks like a good option if you want to stay with Amaysim, otherwise the FlipConnect plan I listed in the deal is for complete months, costs a tiny bit less, and has more than twice the data over the same period. No data banking though.

        • +1

Yes, 5 days in it. It's a matter of convenience though, to stay or go. And the data bank is carried over, so still have lots of data to probably never use.

I suspect too, those plans current at around $10 will probably go up soon. Once one gets on the rising wave of prices there's no stopping the herd. Better parked where the price is now unlikely to go up, for a while, than risk the others. I think.

  • +1

The extra data will be really welcome; I've only got 180.18 GB banked at the moment.

    • Yeah.. so more data in the bank every month and they get extra $$$.

      Win win for them.

  • TIME TO GO ELSEWHERE

  • Has anyone contacted Amaysim & managed to get a better deal than the 50% increase they propose?

  • We are always looking to deliver exceptional value for our customers and are continually evolving to bring you the best of our service. From time to time, this means making changes to our plans.

They just jacked it up 50%!

If this was a person you'd call them abusive and leave their ass

$120/year (=$10/month) with Kogan Mobile's "small" 365-day plan, with 120GB of data (=10GB/month), on the Vodafone network.

I just want to point out that nobody should be paying the regular $120 for the Kogan Mobile 120GB plan.

It frequently gets reduced to $100.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/821019

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/826337

Sometimes it may go for a little less, but $100 should be considered the "normal sale" price, with the very occasional further discount to $80-90.

Obviously this assumes you have decent Vodafone coverage where you live.

If you live in a rural area and a telco that isn't Vodafone has a monopoly on mobile coverage, don't buy any Kogan Mobile plans full stop.

Flip Mobile also have a $4 a month plan, however it is extremely restrictive and won't be suitable even for some light users.

100 SMS limit, 100 minutes call limit, only 500MB of data.

I have contacted amaysim, and here is their reply.

    Hi xxx,

We hope everything has been well.

We understand that this is about the notification you have received about the plan change for mobile number.

I know that you do not use a lot of data so upgrading to a more expensive may not be ideal for you. With this said, we can recommend switching you to the $30 4GB 90-day plan. That works out as roughly just $10 per month. This also means getting an extra 6days! Upfront payment of $30 is required (if on prepaid) but the next payment wouldn't happen until after 90 days. What's great is we can even carry over your banked data from your current plan.

We are always looking to deliver exceptional value for our customers and to bring you the best of our service.

This also reflects our increased operating costs due to the current business environment.

From time to time, the need arises to make changes to our plans. amaysim continues to look for ways to evolve our products and bring customers the best service.

Unfortunately, you are unable to stay on your original plan. However, we can offer you a range of other plans to choose from. For this, kindly contact us through the following:
    - LiveChat by going to https://www.amaysim.com.au/help/contact/live-chat-call-us/
    - phone support at 1300 808 300

Should you have further queries, please feel free to reply to this email.

Keep safe and take care of yourself.

    Regards,
    xxx

    • Excellent news! Thanks!

    • It has been more than a year since Aldi last had that deal, when it used to come around every six months (according to OzB deals). It'll be nice if they bring it back, but I'm not very hopeful.

  • I just found out Amaysim promised the $10 plan would be "forever". See the screenshot from their email in Spet 2020. Did you receive the same promise when you joined Amaysim?

    • Says 2GB forever. Maybe since they gave us 4GB the forever bit stopped applying? :-)

      • Aha, good business tactics and wordplay

    • What did they have to say in return to this, or did you not ask?

      • I again asked them about their "promise". They just said "Unfortunately, you are unable to stay on your original plan and it is automatic." and didn't explain anything.

    • +1

Update: I complained to the TIO regarding the alleged "promise." Amaysim responded by citing numerous terms of the agreement to demonstrate that they do not violate said "promise." Because I don't want to waste my time on this small money, I chose to switch to the $30 4GB 90-day plan instead. As a resolution, Amaysim has transferred my data balance and waived the charge for the first cycle.

  • @Russ OP what did you end up doing? I'm tossing between simplicity of staying with Amaysim and continuing on their $30 90 day plan and switching to catch for $99/yr.

Another risk with of staying with Amaysim is potential for yet another price hike for their 90 day plan. Do I understand correctly it's their new offering specifically for existing customer with low data needs?

    • Yes essentially but I managed to wing something on a yearly plan to come out about the same cost anyway.

    • +1

what did you end up doing?

I changed to the Amaysim 90-day plan. This wasn't for me, it was for family members who make lots of calls.

I make hardly any calls, so I'm on FlipConnect's $4/month plan with limited everything. I don't hit the limits, so it's fine for me.

Do I understand correctly it's their new offering specifically for existing customer with low data needs?

I have no idea, maybe it's a older plan that is no longer publicly offered.

      • Probably the most stable you can get at the moment is to ask if you can get on the $120 60gb unlimited phone plan (which is no longer showing) at least that locks you in till March 2025. I have managed to argue it for a few people (I am on that plan but for $90 using the non renewal trick).

        • +1

Thanks, but the 4GB per 90 days is sufficient for my family members, and they've got a substantial data bank that was carried over to the new plan.
