Citi Rewards MasterCard Annual Fee $149 - Is It Worth It?

Hi,

I was on an older plan with Citi where my annual fee was waived for a number of years.

I've just received notice that I'll be charged $149 per year from March and would like to ask if this credit card is still worth it.

I'm after a daily credit card I can use (everywhere in AU) along with looking at some Rewards feature for a big upcoming spend for an overseas trip.

I thought about NAB Platinum, or even Mac Bank Platinum. Would Latitude Platinum be another good card to consider?

I do have a number of accounts across NAB, uBank (mortgage), and Great Southern Bank at the current time where I would like to bring under one if possible.

What are your thoughts?

  • To others submitting complaints with Citi. Did you get confirmation it was submitted? After I click submit I just get looped back to login screen - no email confirmation it was submitted.

I got my email confirmation for the submission on the next day.

      not yet, no reference number.

Received an email advising they want me to submit via secure message to confirm identity and account security.
        re-submitted via secure message

        • I can't find a complaints function with the secure message online. Shady AF.

            @Maestrok: feedback/general enquiry is what I selected.

    • I submitted the complaint form on 2 Feb morning, and received an email to say it has been escalated to a case manager with complaint reference number at 5:28pm on the same day. The email from Citi stated they will respond in 2-4 business days, but I did not hear back from them within that period.

I'd say wait for Citi's email first before submitting a complaint to AFCA (they like for you to resolve this matter with Citi first), I waited until 8 Feb to submit my complaint to AFCA. On 15 Feb, I received an email from Citi that they will not be charging me $149 on my next anniversary month. Feels like this is going to be an annual activity imo.

Got my letter from them, saying the increase would not apply to my account. Problem solved.

you requested a letter when they made contact?

      • No just put in a complaint against the decision to change my card from $0 to $149. They sent a email letter back.

  • I'm wondering if this card (Citi Premier) is still worth getting for the sign up bonuses - even with the $149 first year fee. 150,000 Citi points with a $7k spend within 90 days, which isn't too hard to achieve if planning on spending on a trip. Someone correct me, but points wise, seems better than even the NAB Signature card - 120,000 NAB points with a $3k spend within 60 days - $145 first year fee. The conversion rate to say KrisFlyer is also better on Citi points compared to NAB points as well.

I find it stupid in this day and age that there isn't any notification of when you receive a response to a secure message but you have to log into the system and check manually for a reply to a message.

    seriously Citibank….

    • Totally agree…. >_>

  • Secure mail message received, confirmed no annual fee would apply. So what's the verdict, guys? Do we think it was an administrative error or are they backflipping? Either way good result.

  • Has anyone's fee-free PayAll transactions failed suddenly? All of mine worked previously until this month. Citi couldn't/wouldn't give me any info about it even when I escalated to a manager. Apparently the only thing to do is wait until next month for it to possibly fail again, in which case there's still nothing I can do lmfao.

I was going to post this in the main PayAll thread (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/610776) but I don't seem to be able to anymore.

  • Has anyone had their original Platinum card upgraded to Signature?
I assume Premier is the new Signature?

    • Can only answer your 2nd question. Signature was renamed to Premier.

  • Has anyone tried migrating their card to the NAB Platinum Rewards Card and asking for the annual fee to be waived?

  • I've been on $15 for more than 2 decades, then I get this crap about having my annual fee raised by a factor of 10

I sent in a complaint that the original brochure (which I still have) specified $15, but they wouldn't budge.

    • Let's consider legal action against Citi for making us victims of NAB, a completely crap bank, demanding compensation for all customers.

  • It may have been easier for NAB to port all Citi customers over to their products that match and honouring existing fees as grandfathered options which would have been better for perception and overall customer satisfaction.

    • Actually, porting us over would probably allow them to not honour existing fees and all associated products (citypayall and citi rewards). But I suspect they would lose a large portion of their citi customers and it's not something they want to happen so suddenly.

      • Ironically NAB publicly stated that the biggest reason why they acquired Citi was because of Citi's significant asset value of their unsecured loans i.e. Citi's credit card business. Yet they're doing a damn good job at pissing off their so called "valuaable" customers acquired with their endless "we're no longer offering your product/your T&Cs are changing". If they port everyone over to NAB products they know they'll have a huge write off of their assets as customers will likely just leave the NAB system, which would defeat the whole purpose of acquiring Citi in the first place.
