Don’t forget to add something cheap for further 6%.

    • I found this book - but couldn't be bothered scrolling further down that list.

Wondering if it's better just to go with a 4tb nvme and throw it in an enclosure

    • wondering the same thing… especially comparison on reliability and longevity

      • And compatibility.

        Got a Corsair MP600 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/809609) a while back.
Have 1x Ugreen and 2x Orico nvme enclosures, all are realtek 9210, with the ugreen being sata and nvme.

First, the drive have issues with overheating, actually its probably the adaptor thats overheating. During long writes, it will just disconnect. Once I placed the drive on the metal tower case which act as a heat sink. The overheating issue went away.

Second, the drive have problems with Windows 11, not sure what exactly, but drive barely gets recognized, when it works fine on two different Windows 10 machines.

Having said that, the MP600 is meant to be a replacement for a Samsung T7 Shield that went funky after a year, primarily as cold back up storage. But given the issues present, its just used as a hot bulk storage.

I might try an enclosure with a different chipset at some stage, but at the time realtek seems to be the best of the lot.

        • any ideas for the best long term cold storage? Based on what I can find on google, blu-ray seems to be the best option

          • @Brakus: That is interesting that Blu-Ray still gets a mention. Used to do this 10+ years go.

    • i'm doing exactly this. NM790 + Ugreen enclosure.

Works so far. But reliability wise, I can't answer. Only have it for a month or two.

      • What speeds are you getting? Are you able to test sometime by transferring more than 100gb at once?

        • nothing superstar actually. I tested on a USB-C-USB-C cable that comes with the Ugreen enclosure, I remember seeing 100-200MB/s write speed on Windows. Will test again today at home and keep you updated.

Tested on $2 USB-C-USB-A cable, getting about 70-80MB/s on Windows.

Didn't really pay much attention to it, as speed isn't what I'm primarily after. I go with NVMe because wanting to avoid spinning disk, and also it's a cheaper 4TB option than buying a Samsung outright.

          • @jianh: Was the Ugreen enclosure highly rated? I might look into it later.

            • @BLAIL: I never cared about its review and just purchased the cheapest one at the time (my bad), and it works pretty well never gave me any trouble. I think there was a sale when I purchased it.

I actually have this enclosure for about 1-1.5years for another smaller NVMe drive before I decided to use it with my NM790 a month or two ago.

              it's Ugreen 60354.

        • Tested. Getting around 110MB/s on average. On Windows 10.

          USB-C-USB-C cable.

          • @jianh: that speed sucks - but considering your use case - I get why you're okay with it.

      • Does the enclosure get hot to touch? NVME drives run hot and the asus brand one I have doesnt seem to be coping, despite it having thermal pads.

The T5 and T7 SSD don't have the same issue even when plugged in all day.

        • +1

No, the Ugreen runs cool the whole time. I've at least never experienced heat issues on the enclosures.

I think the Ugreen 60354 is Aluminium body.

  • But what are the actual read write speeds?

    • On My Laptop - I'd be getting half the advertised speeds - so same as the Samsung T7. Only people with the correct ports will have access to those speeds.

Mac Users not eligible for these speeds as USB3.2 x 2 not supported.

      • Figured. Pretty sure almost nobody has those ports unless they are doing a new build.

  • +1

Note 2000MB/s is only available on usb3.2x2 ports which are pretty rare. Chances are it will only be 1000MB/s, depending on your PC.
