Bridgedale socks are quality. Have a few pairs that have lasted 20 years. Now on their last legs. Bought a pair of their light trail runners recently on clearance for $10. Would love to find more for a similar price.

    • Sounds promising! May I ask if you primarily use them for outdoor activities or general wear? Asking as a healthcare worker looking to replace my old school Holeproof Explorers which are finally wearing down after 10+ years…

      • +1

Yes they're great socks. Irish company. IMHO fair superior to any Kathmandu or Holeproof socks. I have a few different pairs - thicker/warm winter ones for hiking with boots and thinner/lightweight ones for hiking/running/sport in trail runners and hiking shoes. And I ended up wearing them as everyday socks too as I've loved them so much.

Same for me with Katmandu & holeproof explorers. Only got a few left now, non-matching.

      I'll give these a spin

The Opinel N°08 Stainless is a great little food prep knife for overnight hikes.

    • I prefer the carbon steel, but both are great little knives. Very lightweight and also sturdy and capable if you need to do something like fashion some makeshift tentpegs (or spears and death traps).

      • My utility knives are carbon, stainless is just easier to wash it off with a bit of water or something and chuck back in the cooking kit bag (and potentially forget about it for weeks or months between trips) without having to worry about it rusting on you.

    • Just remember Opinel golden rule: never, ever, use the knife until you've closed the locking ring… As soon as you open the blade, close the ring, no exceptions. Very nearly lost a finger, and it's a common story with them. Great knives but don't miss that step

With the Sea to Summit Pillows…

I've had a Large "Premium" (114g) version for a lot of years, it has like an outer cover and an inner bladder, I've never had an issue with it, it's had a HEAP of use…

I also purchased the "Ultralight" (70g) version and it didn't last long, only a couple of trips, it ended up with a heap of tiny holes, too many to patch.. I'm not sure what caused the holes, either way they are very thin and flimsy, certainly not as durable as the "Premium" version..

    • Thanks for the review, going to price match the large premium at anaconda.

  • any advice on a lightweight sleeping mat that isn't to noisy when you move? Looks like this is a complaint for the sea to summit mats, make a lot of noise anytime you move / disturb others.

      Exped megamat 10LXW.

      • +3

Umm that is the opposite of lightweight!
Maybe the closed cell foam mattresses? Thermarest or any of the cheaper copy cats

    • +2

Depends how lightweight, but the Sea to Summit Comfort Plus Self Inflating is virtually silent. I also have the ether light XT which is very noisy, but their self inflating mats are much quieter. However, if you're wanting to backpack it then it's too bulky. I'd suggest looking into something like a Nemo Tensor or Thermarest X-Lite

The Alton Goods sleeping mat with matching fitted sheet is a great little combo. I would especially recommend the insulated version.

    • +1

I have the Nemo Quasar 3D and they are pretty quiet for an inflatable. Not totally silent, but not the squeak you get with some of the others. The comfort on the other hand is supreme.

    • i've never found them to be particularly noisy, and unless your surroundings are quiet, likely not to be too noticeable - a bit noisy but people around will almost always be noisier than your mattress

Love Snowys. Great company with terrific customer service.

Agree. I haven’t ever had a bad experience with them. And I love their review videos (unbiased and clear).

      Tentworld is really good too.

I’m grateful we have these two in the market, good prices, easy and good service.

Be aware that the regular listed price only has a couple of dollars off it and the 'up to 51%' is off some shoddy RRP that nobody would even pay. That being said, the final price probably isn't too bad. Just not some insane discount like it seems to be based on the %s

    • Agreed - decent gear and company but maybe not the best price.
      Worthwhile checking historical prices.
I paid $355 for my Spark SpII from Wildearth.
Paid $220 for the ether light XT so that sounds about right - a bit noisy but people around will almost always be noisier than your mattress.
      Bridgedale socks are great.

      • Light XT over the Light? Only major difference I'm seeing is the thickness?

        • +1

If you're talking about the 'comfort light' in this post, they seem very similar. XT seems to be thicker (4 vs 2.5 inch) and lighter (490 vs 640g), but not as warm (3.2 vs 3.7 r value). They seem to pack to roughly the same size. I think I got the XT for its weight, but the 'comfort light' looks pretty good

      • I paid $355 for my Spark SpII from Wildearth.

yes, Wild Earth can have great prices on selected items

i paid $341.40 for my Ascent II

    • +1

True, I’ve become somewhat immune to this nowadays. You just Google the product, see what the going price is with other shops and go from there. Some places (eg Home Hardware) use real prices and mark them down while a lot of places use some imaginary made up RRP. I think there must be a marketing word for that strategy.

  • Plus 1 because I've had nothing but good experiences with this company.

    Thanks Op.
I went to Anaconda in Geelong yesterday.
They thought that Snowys was an online store store (which they don't price match). I told them it was a physical store, so that was sorted out quickly.
Then they didn't reduce the price by 10%.
I had to tell them about their store price matching policy and then they reduced it further 10%.
Birthday present for my wife sorted!

you're welcome - nice, hope your wife enjoys it :)
