  • Hmm, this or a rice cooker?

    • +1

You can get stuff printed at Officeworks for cheap. You can't get rice from Officeworks for cheap.

      Ergo, rice cooker.

    • +1

Rice cooks well in a microwave, which you probably already have.

15 mins, 70% power, uncovered, 200ml of boiling water to every 100g of rice. Adjust to suit your particular microwave, and use a glass dish so you can see what is going on (ie if you need to add extra boiling water towards the end).

Add an extra 20 minutes and double the boiling water for brown rice.

      • +2

Rice cooks well in a saucepan, which I do

But apparently I need a $440 rice cooker to cook a $1/kg grain, because “reasons”

      • +1

Pretty close to how I do it. I go 1 cup of rice, 1 1/2 cups of tap water in microwave safe container with a pop top lid thing for steam release. 17 mins on 70% power. Comes out awesome

    • Definitely a printer if you prefer a low carb diet.

      • Of course, printers are low in carbs

Might be better to get the Brother MFC-L8390CDW for less than $30 more? https://amzn.asia/d/hBXLu26

    • +4

Worth it for the duplex scanner upgrade IMO. The duplex ADF scanner is my favourite feature in my 3770. Such a time saver.

    • Was keen - but it is $629 at that link?

Generally you would connect the printer directly to your router with a network cable, then your clients can print to it wirelessly via your existing WiFi.
You don't need to put the actual printer on your wireless network, unless you really really can't cable it from your router.

      • You can print directly to the printer if it's on your Wi-Fi network. "Client Isolation" might stop this, but that's not been an option on any home Wi-Fi that I've seen. If it is, just turn it off and printing will work.

        • Right, but you can eliminate the myriad of issues that you might have with the printer's WiFi, by just bypassing it entirely and using a network cable to connect it to your network.
Your wireless clients can still print wirelessly, and the printer's wired connection will always "just work".

          • +4

@Nom: I've never had an issue with my brother laser wifi connection. Rock solid. Always run wirelessly.

    • Don't put printers on WIFI its a bad time.

      • +1

Why? The printer i installed at my parents is on wifi as one of their computer is in a bad spot to run ethernet cable to. So i connected it to wifi. Works just fine.

        • +1

Because wifi isn't robust - if for example your Microwave interrupts your wifi, then you're going to have issues if someone's trying to print while you heat a can of beans. The other reason is that the wifi clients in devices like printers are usually terrible and may or may not play nicely with your particular router.

For things like printers that need a very solid connection, It's always better to connect via wired connections wherever possible.

          • @Nom: I have had different microwaves and different routers. And never experience this drop out.

Not saying it don't happen. Just saying it's never happened to me.

Even tested my tablet placed right above the microwave while microwaving some food all the while playing a live stream youtube video and it didn't even dropout or stutter.

  • I have this printer and the out of ink indicator is bs!

    Big deep unit too

    • What's wrong with the indicator?

      • +1

Comes on really early. Which means for weeks (if it's a home-office level of printing) you'll get the "low toner" error every time you print, which becomes annoying.

It feels like the "low toner" message is on 50% of the time on my printer because just as you replace once empty toner, the next one starts complaining.

        • +2

Reset the "empty" cartridges that aren't empty. Have done this on my 3770 and more than trebled the amount I've printed before needing to swap out even the starter cartridges.

          • @MadMapMan: I'll give it a go. I've only done 822 pages colour and have gone through a full set of colour carts. 1037 B&W and I'm on my 2nd bk.

            • +1

@Chris McMahon: After I reset my black cart, I got 1438 pages from it before I needed to replace. Somewhere I read that the starters were good for 500.

Here are the instructions I was given by aussie_toner. No affiliation, but their service was excellent when I had an issue.

In the steps below, you need to select the specfic cartridge (colour) you want to reset, and the capacity. Repeat Step 3 for each one you want to reset.

To enter reset menu TN253/257 for MFC

Step 1 - Open the cover of the printer where you can see the cartridges.

Step 2 - Press the [Back] key and [X] key at the same time (release both keys) and press again the [Back] key again within 1 second.
              - The printer screen will display "Reset Menu".
              - (This step must be done very promptly otherwise you will not get into the hidden menu)

Step 3 - This will bring you into the reset manual where you can reset the cartridges.
              - Choose the right colour and capacity to reset.

Click "Yes" to choose Reset, and please close the front cover after the screen promotes "Accepted".

Is it cheap inkable, or have they locked it out?

    • +2

This… asking the right and more important questions.

    • This is a laser printer. You may be able to get alternative toner cartridges. Not sure if they've locked out 'fakes'.
We've had the 89xx series and used genuine and alternative toners fine.

      ymmv

    • Good question. The old 3750 & 3770 work with compatible toners IF you don't update the BIOS. These new units MAY have the updated BIOS by default.

I guess we'll need a few guinea pigs to try it out first.

      • This is just an ongoing game… i find it easier these days to be lazy and just pay for the originals. But if you want to go the non genuine route (and this was me in my younger years) then don't worry and buy it. Don't upgrade the firmware when promted, and by the time you need toner the resellers non genuine version will work.

        • +2

All originals carts cost around $522 at Officeworks. I only paid $500 for my 3770.

It just feels wrong to spend more than the full cost of the printer on a set of cartridges.

I got the InkStation compatible versions for ~$160 for a set last time. But colours seems off. I don't know if it's the compatible cartridges or the printer. I don't want to spend another $500 for Brother carts just to find out.

  • +2

I have the previous model MFC-L3770CDW

    bloody excellent printer.

    • Same and paid 300-330ish from GG

    • Mine is really ordinary. Print colours are way out. I took it in for a warranty repair it was so bad and was told "that's as good as it gets". My older Fuji Xerox had much better colour printing accuracy.

Also a lot of 3770s and 3750s made around 2020/21 had bad capacitors. They'll only last ~1/10th-1/5th the normal life, and you'll need a replacement motherboard when they fail (mine already did). Brother knows about it but didn't issue a recall.

    Newer version of the MFC-L3770CDW

I think you mean newer version of the L3750. The L3770 has duplex scanning.

    • I believe you are more accurate.

  • any A3 size printer recommended?

    • +1

A3 laser multifunctions printers are fairly rare and expensive. I don't think there are many under $2k. There's the HP Laserjet Enterprise M528DN ~$2150, OKI MC873DN A3 Colour Multifunction LED Printer ~$2350.

A3 inkjets are a lot more reasonable from $270-~$600 but you'll pay more for ink over toner per page. If you aren't printing that much, it might be worth the trade off.

Also inkjets generally give better photo output (at a higher cost both in ink and paper) than lasers if that's more important. There's an Epson EcoTank Pro ET-16600 around $1600 that runs off ink bottles so it'll have a lower running costs than cartridge inkjets, if you want both high(er) quality photos than laser but a low(ish) cost per page.

      • I have a brother 6930DW, it is a great all-in-one printer until the black ink is blocked now just sitting there. I need to get it fixed or get a replacement. a bit silly just buy the new brother 6930DW as they are pretty much the same machine with a a white skin.

  • Anybody with 3770 have issues printing PDF's from Acrobat reader? Had to install a different driver but once windows updates, it happens again.

Isnt this more a new version of 3750 since it doesnt have duplex scanning?

    • I have revised it. Thanks.

  • The scan to Onedrive/Teams/SharePoint on these works well - not exactly simple to set up, but this & a shredded has helped kept my house tidy.

  • I recently bought an Epson EcoTank ET-4850 for $520 with eBay discounts and stacking gift card.
