Dates include much of the cherry blossom season, as well as Easter 2024!

Cherry blossom season predictions for Korea - Seoul looks around Easter time, if last year is anything to go by.

The cherry blossom or sakura (in Japanese) is never perfectly predictable, but some early predictions are below for Japan:

I booked a one way trip 2 weeks ago from Melbourne to Seoul with Southern China for $320.

Some good prices at the moment.

    • Details please? Dates? Cheapest I saw on ozbargain was about $600

  • +2

these are insane prices! just came back and paid more than double :(

  • +8

These layover times are insane though.

    • +7

Yeah, 15 or 16hrs is ridiculous. I'd rather pay a few hundred extra and save nearly a day plus the hassle of a stop over.

Everyone puts a different value on their time though and I'm sure plenty of true Ozbargainers will lap these deals up.

      • I also really want to know if you easily transit between flights or if you get frisked by the CCP for all you've got.

Every time I've asked people say "it's probably normal", I do not trust probably.

  • Any tips on places to stay / accomodation for a april snow trip with a 3yr old. Been told Hakuba is the go. April should be less busy, cheaper? But where to stat exactly? Lodge wih ensuite recomendations etc? Cheers.

    • If you're going to Hakuba, have an idea of which snow resort you will hit up. Then book an accom close to there, or ensure the accom has a shuttle to where you want to go.

We stayed near the main bus terminal, but we decided on going to Tsugaike for the easiest beginner slopes. That resulted in a 30 min each way bus shuttle (+waiting in the cold). It was definitely worth it, as the slopes were extremely beginner friendly

Also, when we went, lots of restaurants did not take walk ins, so you might need to book before going in.

This was all in Jan 2024.

      • Cheers. But i think April will be very different (ie. Did Whistler in spring 2018, and lift passes were 10 days for $200, and meals were $2.50 - anything on the menu). Accom in a unit was $150 per night.
Kinda hoping Japan does something similar.

According to their website, they provide free accommodation for transits longer than 8h - anyone tried this before?
Though for normal travelers it's only C or D grade hotels.

    • +2

Yeah, my family along with other passengers were shoved into a bus and taken to a far off raggedy hotel and no one in the bus or at the hotel spoke a word of english.

    • +1

China Southern's biggest discount tickets provide no hotel and only one checked bag.
… which also means, if all these flights have two checked bags, China Southern can go cheaper than this!

  • Good job OP.
Is it true that b there's direct flight from Brisbane to Guangzhou?
Is that why it's more expensive?

  • I am personally very suspicious of these recent cheap flights routed through china.

    • +1

What's to be suspicious of? Besides the stupidly long layovers nothing will happen to you. These fares are just highly subsidised by the Chinese government, no different to the ridiculously cheap tours you can find in mainland cities.

All three of the main Chinese carriers are losing money hand over fist ($US2B last year, $US15B in 2022) and the CCP is just trying to keep them going until business travel between the US and China gets back to normal. In the mean time enjoy your dirt cheap fares via China.

      • I can't see how this economical at all. China and/or airlines must be making big $ loss and if so, why? (Maybe not?). Personally, the long layover both legs of the trip is too hard to manage.. practically +20h compared to more direct flights. Very good deal for people who can make use of their time during the flight and not find it too uncomfortable.

        • +1

Keep flying slots or lose them

      • -3

why is the Chinese government subsidising it through? They have to be getting something out of it. They have the right to take your phone and demand the password, they take the details of all entrants, including connecting flights. At best they are installing spyware for only monitoring.

        • +2

LOL Australian Customs can take your phone and demand the password as well as take your details including connecting flights. How is that any different? As if the CCP gives a shit about some tight arse getting a cheap flight to Seoul. Give me a break.

They are subsidising the fares to keep the airlines afloat, to keep their landing slots and to increase tourism. It's not that complicated.

  • Damn it I just booked qantas return last week to Seoul for $1150 each

    • Would much rather fly Qantas for a few hundred more..

  • +2

Is there a way to extend the layover?

  • +1

Why an extra $400 from BNE lol

  • -2

Cheap flights just to get snatched by the CCP death penalty on the way through because of some comments you made about the CCP on years ago. Think I'll pass.

  • Are these prices likely to change v soon? I have some logistical things i have to work out in the coming weeks, but would love to eventualy cop a flight.

  • Has anyone returned from a trip to Japan with these guys yet? I have tickets booked for next month and worried about my transit through Guangzhou and potential flight cancellations?
