To be eligible for this product / offer you must:

not have held a card issued directly by American Express Australia in the last 18 months

    • looks like cashback T&Cs does not have the condition of AMEX 18 months card holding
but $0 first year annual fee does

    • Does that apply for secondary card holders?

      • No, the 18 month exclusion only applies to primary cardholders of personal and business (not corporate) Amex cards. David Jones Amex holders are also exempt and are eligible for a sign up bonus.

  • So basically free money for getting into a card? Nice find. I'll use it once and rip it up and cancel after I get cash back, ez

I personally would opt for some points rather than measly $130. Given that it takes ~3 credit cards to get enough points for business class flight to Europe, I am expecting any return CC value to be at least $4k.

  • Nice. I will look into the details.

Is there another credit check if you already have an Amex?

    • Not 100% sure, but as no one else has responded yet - I would assume so. Your circumstances might have changed since your last check. I.e. you might have applied for another 50k of CC, or you might have defaulted on your payments lately.

    • I've heard since AMEX is a 'charge card' not a 'credit card' that it does not have an impact on your credit score.

Love for someone to confirm/deny with reason.

      • Are you sure this particular card is a charge card? It has an interest listed on it :-)

      • Platinum Edge is a credit card, only the Platinum Card is a charge card. Both will impact your credit score when you apply and do a ‘hard’ pull of your data.

However, a charge card will display a limit of $1 as there is no ‘limit’ on the card (the card must be paid in full or you go into default) - you likely wouldn’t need to report it if you were applying for a home / personal loan.

    • Apply for cc will trigger a credit check regardless of history.

Unless you are ineligible get the higher-tier cards (which have much better bonuses), this is not a good deal (when taking into account the cost to your credit score)

Is credit score actually used in Australia?

      • I would say so. Definitely if you are applying for any type of loan or credit card.

        • Not for home loan

      • Yes, but different with other countries

I would say not for the credit "score" (but yes for the credit file/history/report), but it's all conjecture on anyone's part.

If "score" is used, it is only one factor of questionable weight, and certainly not a score in the sense of determining an outcome. OzBargain and other forums are rife with people lamenting that their application was rejected even though they have a very high score.

For my part I don't worry about it in the slightest, and merrily carry on with my serial churning.

    • How does this impact your "credit score" if you pay the balance before it's due?

      • +1

Another credit check and also another "debt". In the credit rating they do not see if you pay in full or just the minimum. They check if you are not behind or defaulted. So if you got 5x credit cards with $15k, it is treated as a loan of $75k

        • I should be okay then I reckon. I got one card last year that never went below the upper limit - topped it up before making a purchase. It's in credit still, something I need to sort so that I can cancel it.
          Thanks

@PatchyFog: Your total card limit is taken as an unsecured loan by credit approvers upon applying for new products (e.g., home loans etc.); as you can choose to withdraw that unsecured loan at any instant you want, even if you keep the card in credit.

            • @megadeth: Megadeth - first real band I saw live back in '91…well technically it was the support act that I saw first I suppose, AIC.

              Thanks for the feedback.

        • They can also see how long you've had credit accounts open for. There's no definitive proof, but it's possible the card providers may start looking negatively at a repeated pattern of getting a new card and cancelling within a year.

      • +1

Different credit score providers will have their own algorithms. The initial credit card application will lower your credit score and not having overdue payments will increase your score.
Too many credit card applications within certain timeframes (eg. 3 months) will also further lower your score

  • Does this amex have the Netflix offers as well.

  • No minimum spend? Pretty good if true

  • No annual fee is normal in the first year. So this is really just the cashback as the deal. With an 18 month exclusion between applications…id go one of the bigger offer cards.

    • i dont see any other Amex cards with no annual fee in the first year. Send a link?

      • +2

I mean this card is always no annual fee.in the first year..

Id go a card with a $450 travel credit, lounge passes and 100k + airline points. It will have an annual fee..but will cost $450 for $1450 of value.

*Note the travel credit is only $450 worth on a Virgin flight…the rest is overpriced…ie. You will get a hotel booking for $400 direct, or $450 via Amex. Virgin flights are the same price..for light fares.

        • My understanding is that you can be eligible for both cards?

          • @Thranrond: Technicallt, soon as you hold an aemx…you hold an amex (18 month lock out).

BUT..I do like mass applications as a strategy if you have a big spending month. Ie.apply for 3 cards at the same time (before the credit checks, prior holding checks hit)..just make sure you have the spend requirements for bonuses ready to go.

  • thanks OP

  • My application for this card was unsuccessful. The customer care is not giving a reason. No free money.

  • Are we going to get the complimentary lounge access at airports with The American Express® Platinum EDGE Card? What is the major difference between The American Express® Platinum Card and Platinum EDGE card?

    • +2

I think they Platinum and Platinum Edge are 2 totally different products
Platinum is a charge card (no spending limit but you need to pay full statement balance) which has a premium annual fee ($1450) but comes with many travel benefits, it aims for higher income group

Platinum Edge is a credit card (you can choose to pay minimum payment, min credit limit is $3000) with way less benefits (eg. $200 travel credit), much lower annual fee ($195) but is great for day-to-day spending given the high earning points for supermarket and fuel stations

To your question, Platinum edge has no access to airport lounges
