Nah, Jim Caviezel's best work is the movie The Thin Red Line.

      • +3

Great actor shame he is a complete lunatic

    • I enjoyed the movie Frequency a lot too

  • +11

Imagine a large part of your identity revolving around being for/against a movie on an obscure topic you would have never cared to learn about unless it was shoved in front of your face by the specific media you listen to.

  • +6

I saw this for free at the cinema on a 40 degree day using a previous bargain. It was ok. It's a reminder that there are some sickos out there, and not just online. And it's way better than Aquaman 2 that's for sure!

  • +12

    Good movie, watched in cinema

  • +3

    I wouldn’t watch this ,
Not because of the politics around it ,
But because the subject matter is so depressing .

Wasn’t it up against a Disney movie in theatres or the Oscar’s or
Something that made it controversial ?

I watch movies as a momentary escape from the stresses and worry of real life .
For depressing documentaries and thought provoking movies there’s Michael Moore etc .

    P.S.
That movie about the Christian that goes to Africa and rescues child soldiers was ok.

    • It is a movie that basically invokes despair the whole way through — kind of like Dunkirk. Definitely very depressing subject matter :(

      • If it makes you feel any better it was almost entirely fictional

  • +2

There has been many movies that involve Child Trafficking, why is this one different and why did it cause a fuss?

    • +8

The main actor is a bit of a loon, and the dude which the true story is based upon allegedly groomed some women in his privately conducted undercover operations to uncover child trafficking rings.

    • +23

Because it was adopted by Trumpists in the US as some sort of "fight against the evil socialise pedo conspiracy" symbol, even those statistically members of his own party seem to be disproportionately likely to be involved in such conspiracies. Also not so subtly plays up to the QAnon "secret tunnels"/pizzagate nonsense.

      • Thing is some of those theories become slightly less crazy when you see the manifests for flights to Epstein Island, and the names that were unsealed last month.

      • Yeah, those Trump cultists are so weird for being against pedos. How can they believe the crazy conspiracy theories that people conspire to abuse kids when it has literally never happened before and certainly never been covered up by the media?

    • -8

Because some people on the left decided this was a right-wing conspiracy or at least Q-Anon adjacent, and then the right's reaction to that.
Given the times people couldn't just agree child trafficking was bad - it became a political purity test.

      • +5

You know you can be anti sex trafficking and and think a movie about it is absolutely terrible. If I think Taken 3 is bad it doesn't mean I'm pro sex trafficking 😂

  • +4

Fine movie, not worth the big deal a lot of dummies are making over it but worth a watch especially for free.

  • +12

The start of the movie was fine, but i got bored pretty quickly and it's pretty long. I prefer Taken, has a lot more action in it.

Fun fact, the actor (Jim Caviezel) pushes Qanon conspiracies and speaks at their conferences. It's a bit scary if you know people who have been radicalized by this sort of shit. Guess this dude is gonna have more cred with the Qanon community after this movie. Personally found this a bit annoying as I will struggle to enjoy rewatching the Person of Interest TV show, which is objectively quite good.

    • +3

JC's movie died for your sins

      • With your assistance I have realised that this man's initials mean he was born to play Jesus

        • +1

Only if he has the passion for it

    • +1

That Newsweek article was a joke. A Q-Anon convention???
As for Caviezel, yes he's made some out-there comments - but tarring the movie with his comments is like saying Mission Impossible is Scientology propaganda because it stars Tom Cruise.

      • +6

There are tweets with videos embedded in both the articles I linked where he sounds 100% crazy. In terms of the Qanon conferences, they do happen:

        https://youtu.be/KYKOLwt8pwo?si=Pl1KkJgyDyEZv7k_

The content of the movie and any factual inaccuracies will likely be taken as fact by Qanon folk, may even lead to some uptake of Qanon conspiracy theories. Same can't be said for scientologists being recruited by Tom Cruises performance in mission impossible.

  • +15

If you want to actually do something about child abuse in Australia, I'd suggest donating to Bravehearts.

  • +9

I thought we didn't do culture war politics on OzBargain? Free with Prime is a good deal, no two ways about it. If you don't like the politics… it doesn't matter. I wont be watching because it doesn't sound very good not because there is a culture war panic that qanon likes it.

    • +9

Seriously? This place devolves into apes slinging poo at each other at the very thought of anything controversial. For such an amazing resource - it's full of some really whack people.

  • +16

Wasting two hours of my life watching a trash-tier action movie to own the left.

Imagine what level of MAGA chud you have to be to choose this over eight beers and a rerun of Predator. Figure it out.

    • -2

I think you'll find widespread MAGA support for Predator too.
Its a nice analogy for the southern border or crime.

      • +12

could also be the title for a trump biography

      • Wait. What? What's Australia's southern border? What is it, Tasmania?

    • Well it sounds like you've wasted a lot of time already so if I were you I wouldn't watch this movie either so you can make your own opinion when you've already decided what side you're on according to that wonderful post.

      Excellent work.

    • Beer raises estrogen. Estrogen makes men more likely to be woke. Retain your masculinity and don't drink beer.

  • +17

Ah yes, we constantly hear about it via mainstream sources, it's streaming on one of the big 3 streaming giants, but it's somehow always described as "banned/censored" by people who enjoy loudly accusing others of "supporting child abuse" somehow

    • +3

i wish the so-called silent majority would just stay silent.

    • Generally the entertainment industry is accused of child abuse because Hollywood and the industry has a long history of systemic child abuse.

  • +9

jim caviezel is such a nut job these days

    • Shame because he is a great actor

  • -4

The left hate this movie - as this thread proves.

Edit: As does the numerous downvotes.

    • +14

Does that mean the "right" love virtue signalling by watching it?

      • Dunno.

I'm uber right-wing, never watched it and never intend to.

        • +5

I'm DiDi left wing and I've seen it teehee

          • +5

@Dan24: I imagine some Ola centrists have seen it too

        • +3

Hating the people and fanfare behind this movie makes you "the left"?

So? Why even make that comment lol

        • +4

Does R4 stand for "Reich 4" a.k.a the fourth Reich?

    • +2

The downvotes are because it has nothing to do with politics - it is an average movie at best, marred by a poor script, bad direction and barely passable acting.

    • +2

The left hate lying dishonest grifters that abuse women. It's why they also hate Trump. In fact I'm pretty sure that most the people that donated money to this movie were the same geniuses that donate money to a billionaire (Trump)

      • Why has the Ashley Biden diary been covered up then?

        • How do you know about it if was covered up 😂 you people are the most gullible people on the planet.

          • @ubcool: Show me where a left wing media outlet has covered the story in-depth.
Show me where the media has questioned him about it.
Show me any prominent leftists that have said the allegations need to be investigated.

            You people are so dishonest.

  • +3

The mental gymnastics that some people go through to try to paint this movie in a particular light is sad…

  • +5

Its wild how both the actor and character it was based on are both loons.

  • +23

    A recap for the smoothbrains:

    • there are legitimate experts working in this field, a bunch of which have condemned - and none of which have condoned Operation Railroad (the organisation this movie was based on)

    • Operation Railroad literally kicked out Tim Ballard (main character in this movie) for multiple sexual harassment accusations

    • Tim Ballard flies around the world first class charging it to the “charity“, in addition to that millions of dollars in donations have not been recovered

    • Multiple statements by Tim Ballard in regards to his rescue work have been proven to be falsehoods

    • -4

Have experts actually 'condemned' this movie?
I thought they criticised it as not representative or typical - and that sometimes these types of rescues are dangerous - but that isn't really the same thing.
Movies often portray things that are not representative or might be dangerous in real life.

      • +6

Yes. They have. This movie is not helpful at all.

    • -2

      Hurr durrrrrrr

    • +6

Bob Rodgers (CEO of anti-trafficking ministry Street Grace) - “We’re grateful to the film and the attention that it draws to the issue, but it’s important for people to realize that that’s not necessarily what trafficking looks like in Houston or DC,” he said. “It’s our kids in our communities being bought and sold by people in our communities.” He’s not criticizing the film—“it was not filmed to be a domestic or local issue”—but he wants audiences to know what domestic organizations are doing.

Shaw (chief program officer for Frontline Response) - Shaw was “blown away” by the movie and is recommending it to people, but has caveats: “Even child trafficking victims that have been ‘taken,’ most of the time, they’re resistant to being rescued, because they’re not in that psychological space, either. So a big part of our trainings is deprogramming our volunteers into what their expectation should be about how people are going to respond to them, and what sex trafficking looks like.”

"It’s great that [the film] is raising awareness,” said Suzanne Lewis-Johnson (former FBI agent who worked on child trafficking cases)

      • +9

You’re copy pasting quotes out of context from christianitytoday.com (lol)

Just take the last quote of yours from Suzanne Lewis-Johnson and look at what she REALLY said: “ Lewis-Johnson said she was “gravely concerned” with the way the film has been embraced to advance the QAnon conspiracy, and reiterated the importance of sticking to the truth when it comes to confronting the very-real issue of human trafficking.

“I’m happy we’re talking about the issue of trafficking, but now let’s talk about what it really looks like,” she said. “Frankly, as a person of faith, it is so concerning to me how sometimes in my faith community we just latch on to something because it aligns with who we are and what we believe. And then we just accept all of it. … We need to look at the facts, because we’re going to make the problem worse if we don’t make decisions based on good information and if we don’t bring everyone to the table who needs to be part of the conversation.”

Read what actual experts are saying (without quoting two Christian ministries and misquoting one expert): https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/sound-of-f…

        • You meant no expert if we ignore the Christian experts? lol.

Show me from this link where she said "gravely concerned": https://www.christianitytoday.com/news/2023/july/anti-traffi….

It's possible I unintentionally misquoted her. But if you can't find it from the link, it means you lied. I did not misquote her from the source I got it from.

        • I had already commented on the Rolling Stone article when someone posted it. It's really bad, but I still tried to say something positive about it. An appeal to authority is not necessarily a fallacy, but it can be.

    • Paul Hutchinson sucks as much if not more.

    • Ok Snowflake, but what does that have to do with this being a deal or not?

  • +3

Oh, these comments are just a rerun of "What is a woman", skip.

    • -1

The obvious difference is that What is a Woman is a documentary on an important topical issue but clearly intended to be inflammatory.
This is a 'based on true story' movie about an important topical issue that only became inflammatory because of the current political climate.

      • +1

only became inflammatory because of the current political climate.
Or maybe it became inflammatory because of the real things that occurred outside this fake version of reality, and the proponents of the film mix up the fake version of reality with reality?

    • You mean mouth breathers calling people pedophiles for saying it's bad?

  • -7

Putting aside the movie & it's bent, how is this even a legit bargin??
It's a title available as part of a movie streaming service, not a bargain.

If you feel a need to promote the movie, use the forums, or go to telegram, 4chan, etc…

    • +3

      you must be new here

      • +3

Yep, you are right, it's my fault for engaging.. off to go and be in the real world again….

        • -3

off to go and be in the real world again…

only to come back and engage in this thread 10 minutes later

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14938688/

        • +1

          The real world you say?

May I plunge you into the real world with three simple words and a name.

          Wood. Royal. Commission.

          Bill Heffernan

          Welcome.

    • Why is Telegram considered on the same level as 4chan?
Like, for real, I am off most social media, but have telegram due to it having better features than other chat platforms.

      • +2

It was a bit off the cuff, my fault. Any platform has it's faults. Though Telegram [and Twitter/X more recently] has become the locations for far right extermist activity. As as an example, The Institute for Strategic Dialogue in Germany has conducted several goods studies on how Telegram is used by various "power users" as a medium for the acceleration of their ideas.
It's usually due to the removal of any moderation & the relative level of encryption that Telegram has been one of the most used for this.

Of course, there are also 'regular' users, so it's tricky..

        • +3

I love how you clearly articulate your thoughts in a respectful and reasonable way and people are like, "f@ck you, imma neg everything you say"

  • Such a stark comparison to the previous deal lol. Comments are somewhat similar

  • +6

My favourite part of the movie is when one of the protagonists says "You hear that? That's the Sound of Freedom."

    • +8

Second only to when he cocks his gun, turns to his buddy and says "it's freedom time" before sounding his freedom all over the place

  • for all the cookers picking up Q's message! Save the kids

    • Yeah, those crazy cookers think people conspire to abuse kids! So dumb lol

      • The dumbest ones think Trump is fighting a secret war to stop it.

    • +6

How on earth is a movie about child trafficking "political"?

      • -3

        Right?
Its SOOO political to mention an anti-child trafficking movie…
The left have really lost the plot.

    • +3

Do you vote the same way on all the leftist stuff posted here? My guess is no

    • +3

If you think this movie is political at all you have some serious issues. Consider the fact you may be brainwashed

      • Considering anybody critical of the film is labelled a left wing pedophile I'd say yeah it's pretty obviously political 😂

    • +1

Maybe you agree with it or maybe you don't

Hopefully you're not referring to the child trafficking…

  • +2

I'll await the reactionary lefty "deal" post of some free movie about kids with "gender dysphoria" who's parents just also happen to be "queer", but that's got absolutely thing to do with why the kid doesn't know what they are of course…

    • +2

Nobody cares about your life story

  • +6

Funny thing is most would have watched this movie for what it is. A movie. Completely oblivious to the bulls*** being posted here.

But somehow there’s always someone or some people with a barrow to push.

It’s a movie. Keep it simple folks

    • +1

Except it's been clearly marketed as a true story that helps fight sex trafficking.

  • +6

Watched this and didn't see any political agenda at all, based on a true story apparently, great movie.

    • +6

Very loosely, and the real guy is not a hero or good human. Sexual harassment and grooming, flying first class and charging it to the charity donations. He got kicked out of the charity.

It’s barely even based on him really.

    • +2

Now go read about the creep that got rich making it all up and the nutcase that plays him in the movie.

  • +4

The movie is pretty average. The message is good though. There is a lot of artistic license, which was openly admitted by everyone involved. But still nothing wrong with the movie.

The issues surrounding the movie are based on comments made by those involved, and QAnon viral marketing that surrounded it. But if I limited myself to only movies with people I respected, I would be stuck watching only Keanu Reeves movies.

Watch it if you want, don't watch it if you don't want. It's not the second coming, it's also not the devil. It's just a movie.

  • +5

Paul Hutchinson (executive producer and Ballard's right hand man on missions) has been outed for being into kiddies and was banned from missions for being too sexual with the kids they were apparently saving.

    So yeah there's that.

    https://pca.st/episode/40850c1f-bf44-4e9d-8c83-4e9070f3456a

    • +1

Yeah just like how Assange was all of a sudden accused of rape when he didn't conform… Way too many "girl who cries wolf" situations to take these sort of accusations seriously anymore with hard evidence.

      • +13

You haven't looked into it at all and yet your first instinct is to protect a paedo because it lines up with your culture wars.

Yeah, cool. Dunno about that but you do you.

      • +1

to take these sort of accusations seriously anymore with hard evidence.

        Freudian slip?
