[NSW] Royal Umbrella Thai Jasmine Rice 20kg $54 @ Woolworths, Cabramatta

181

I saw it at Woolies, Cabramatta. I'm not sure if it is available at other woolies. Normally ~$60 for 20kg these days.

  • We find Costco has the best rice.

Kirkland Signature Thai Hom Mali Jasmine Rice 22.7kg $49.99

    • Yeah that is pretty good stuff. Price was relatively stable but gone up in recent months.

i have been eating Royal Feast Jasmine Rice 10kg for $19 for a few years now. Used to be $16 after half price last year or so. Royal Feast Jasmine Rice 10kg

    • Yeah same. I find this rice nice enough.

Not really a good price per kg. $2 per kg is the sweet spot for jasmine rice

    • This is the only brand that hasn't let me down ever but I agree it's not a great price.

Is there any $2/kg brand you recommend or are you more like "whatever there is for $2/kg"?

        • Shows $19 right now. It's hard to find something on par with Royal Umbrella, but I'm happy to try again and five this one a go.

          Royal Feast Jasmine Rice 10kg
          $19 00 Was $38.00

          • @pizzaguy: I have tried Royal Feast . It is ok but havent tried royal umbrella.

@HolyCr4p: Seems like people haven't really tried Royal Umbrella, but are throwing negs and not quite favourable comments…

This is Vietnamese rice. There is no fragrance at all.

You guys better try Thai rice to see the difference

          • @letmecry: Must've offended some glass hearts for speaking the truth. Thai rice is the best especially the premium "hom mali" grain.

        • This is a Woolies brand. Supermarket home brand is cheaper because they buy old rice.

My wifes preferred brand of Jasmine rice and the price is good compared to any shops that i know of in Melbourne.

Shopping in cabra and quote Woolies rice for a deal, you're doing wrong.

    • I don't think that's true, at least not nationwide. It's not even available online. No trace of such deals on OzB - and it's a great brand, I imagine people would post bargains. Is it some Woolies in particular that you're talking about?

Note it's easy to confuse all the jasmin rice brands that have "royal" in their name.

      • Yeah, looks like I remembered wrong.
It's Royal Feast that Woolies normally sell at half price, not Royal Umbrella

For the uninformed - this rice is A LOT better than the garbage you buy from woolies (ie. Sun Rice, Royal Feast)

You will get better fluffy-ness in texture, rice is a lot more fragrant and comes with a nice sweetness to it.

It's the type of rice that actually makes people like just eating white rice…

That being said, I eat Sun Rice and Royal Feast cuz i'm a pov.

  • Got Golden Wheel Thai Hom Mali Rice 10kg $27 at Woolworths a while ago, that was pretty good stuff.
Sun rice Jasmin or medium is good enough for half price, it's more about how you cook it.

Would want to store 20kg properly, annoying once you have to pick out weavels after a long time

    • Stores it in IKEA 365+ airtight container, that may help.

      • Damn it was just down there the other week.. good idea, may see if they got a 5L version.
Usually put 2kg in another jar and a bag clip on the packet, but after a while still happens
(I think it's the nature of getitng a large bag, the weavel eggs are probably already in the rice)

        • What's with those "weavel" eggs? Or are you calling pantry moths weavels?

          https://www.google.com/search?q=Weevil

Anyway, whatever pests you have, it's worth getting rid of them instead of merely protecting every piece of food you want to store in the pantry. You start with moving/throwing away everything that's infested, instead of picking out "weavels".

          • @pizzaguy: hmm yeah whatever they are they must get in the bag if they don't come with them.
Yes agreed, good to keep it clean to start with

          • +1

@pizzaguy: Why do weevils get into rice?

The presence of rice weevils are a sign of poor storage practices and do not make the rice unsafe for consumption. However, poor storage practices could affect the quality of the rice. Observing good storage and handling practices can help preserve the quality of our rice and reduce the presence of rice weevils

How do I permanently get rid of rice weevils?

Buy grains in small quantities and eat within a reasonable period. Store grains in tightly sealed glass, metal, or sturdy plastic containers (not bags). Regularly clean pantry cracks, crevices, and shelves. Eliminate the source— discard any infested foods.

Anyway they are a thing, and don't get into any of my other grains but mainly have those stored in jars whereas they can get into the bags of rice that are clipped closed. I reckon I'll grab a 5L clipseal container from Ikea still :)

            • @G-rig: Interesting, I've been only dealing with pantry moths and their larvae. Never heard of rice weevils in Vic.

@pizzaguy: Yeah maybe it's something for the more humid states, but comes with the territory when buying bulk rice. As it says, they aren't harmful but just wastes time getting them out when rinsing. A chef mate said to fill a pot of water with the rice in, and they float to the top.

Better to try and eliminate them with a sealed container though.
