How Long to Wait to Apply for a Credit Card after Rejection?

Hi,

I have been recently rejected by Amex for supposedly being a churner, similar to many others on OzBargain.

As this is the first time I got rejected for a credit card since I started churning, I am not sure how long I should wait before I start applying for a new card with another financial institution.

The Amex Customer Service agent told me I would need to wait for 90 days before I can apply for another Amex card. Does this 90 day timeframe also apply if I would like to apply for a credit card with another provider (Say, Westpac or Virgin Money?).

Thank you.

  • Approx. 3 years.

    What is your credit score?

  • Condolences, who was this awful person that rejected you?

    • Should swipe left on them next time!

Can confirm that AMEX have tightened up on churners.
My last Amex was closed more than 3 years back, so recently applied for the Qantas 120,000 point offer.
Got turned down. Credit rating "excellent", all other metrics were fine.
My negative factor was 11 credit checks in last 2 years (mostly) due to churning.
This is a new approach by Amex

    • Yup, basically the same as me. They only referred to 'credit check' when I called them up, and the Equifax credit report showed nothing negative except for the credit enquiries due to churning.

So just wondering now how long should I wait between this AMEX rejection and applying for the next credit card with another institution.

I have often applied for two cards in quick succession - so I don't think you really need to wait too long before applying to another credit provider.

Not sure when AMEX will give us another card though.

        • I've done this in the past - back in 2022 when I applied for Westpac and NAB cards within 1 week from each other and both were accepted.
Just wondering whether the fact that this AMEX application was rejected would have an impact on the next card application (whereas the NAB application was approved when I applied for Westpac the week after in 2022).

    • same here - excellent credit rating, yet their reason was something to do with the credit report.

the only things in there relate to churning.. ;)

    • Wow, did you ever churn with AMEX prior to that?

I'm a big fan of AMEX due to how good their service is, I'll churn the Big 4 before AMEX any day of the week. Although if AMEX have cottoned onto this it might only be a matter of time before the Big 4 do the same? There's probably people that work for the Big 4 who browse these forums honestly.

After CBA rejected me Amex sent me a card with no questions asked.
Later CBA came back and wanted me to churn to them, I asked for better condition and they agreed.
Then Westpac wanted me again. When I had both CBA put their rates up. So got Suncorp (secretly issued by Citi).
When Citi cheated I went back to CBA. Never asked Coles and pay my Bunnings stuff with CBA.
Masters sent me to Amex. When they folded Amex sent me a gold card without asking. Then they wanted an annual fee for no longer using it. I had to get the ombudsman involved to fend off their debt collector.

Amex sent me a card with no questions asked.

Same with me, no questions asked, but never got it because they didn't have my name and address.

      • they asked me a few questions, but i didnt ask them any questions. does that count?

        • I did save mostly 5% on Masters purchases. Sadly a duopoly has now vanished due to WW's incompetence.

Having 2 merchant accounts I rarely process Amex cards due to its clients usually being the most troublesome ones.

I got rejected by AMEX and applied and got approved for a NAB credit card like 3 days after.

Recently rejected from AMEX, waited 2 weeks and was approved for a Westpac card.

  • Got rejected due to insufficient credit capacity and applied again same day, got approved a week later.

Old credit card co finally confirmed to new credit card co that I did in fact close account after taking over a month. Calling about rejection, new credit card co did explain that unless its confirmed by old co, it looks like I still had the old card.

Depends on why you were rejected?

    • Could you provide more details? Did the new credit card company contact the previous one?

I encountered a similar issue, but they informed me my old card remains active and declined my application, citing credit capacity as a reason.

  • I got rejected by AMEX as well. Great credit rating, yet their reason was something to do with the credit report.
I think it's related to churning

  • Rejected by westpac :( might be cause i have like 8 enquiries on my credit report..

    • Perhaps try writing a complaint or ask for it to be reassessed? I applied for a Citi card after my AMEX rejection, and it was initially rejected. Then I submitted a complaint to their customer advocacy email, and 1 week later my application was approved.

  • Cheers didn't know they had such a team, will give it a try.

  • After my Amex rejection I've been approved by Westpac. My credit rating is excellent.

It's pretty clear that Amex have tightened up their lending. They have It seems they've taken a business decision not to accept customers that they think will be unprofitable. Kinda like how betting agencies restrict punters who win too often or too much. Unfortunately it's all legal so we just have to take our business elsewhere.

  • This is annoying. I was considering the Amex Velocity Platinum as my next card after I refinance our house loan… wanted the free domestic return flight for a trip down to Hobart.

  • This just happened to me, my credit score is perfect

  • I applied for amex and ing at the same time on a Friday (as soon as my home loan was settled) and got approved by ing on next Monday. Called amex on Tuesday and was told it's rejected, so I applied for anz and bom at the same time on that Tuesday, both got approved.
Now I'm waiting for the bonus to arrive for ing and bom, anz bonus received and card closed. Today I applied for suncorp and got approved after 5 hours.
I would say amex rejection won't affect your next application.
