Swap DavidJones AmEx to Qantas AmEx Ultimate: 70k Qantas Points (with $3000 Spend in 3 Months), $450 Travel Credit, $450 Ann Fee

120

Rang to cancel my old AmEx Qantas Ultimate card with the intent of going cold turkey with AmEx for new Sign-up benefit after the required "wait-time".

Operator said I needed to have NO AmEx accounts for future sign-up bonuses, then said there was an offer for David Jones customers to migrate their accounts to the Qantas Ultimate card with a 70,000 points bonus.

Details are:
Spend $3000 in first three months to get 70K Qantas points
$450 Annual Fee (offset by $450 Amex travel credit)
$3000 minimum credit limit

No need to wait the 18 months to sign-up again…

DJ's are announcing partnership with Latitude Finance in coming months - unknown if they will offer Airline points. All other info still points to AmEx site.

Damn… cancelled mine a couple months ago

Need to do this via Phone: 1800 507104 - when prompted for reason for call, say CANCEL Card

    • I cancelled mine few months ago, but wasn’t offered any deal

  • Did you also have a Amex DJ card to take up this offer?
Or did you have to close your Amex Qantas card?

    • I was wondering too. Not clear from OP’s message.

      • See note below - I had 2 cards

I already had both DJ's and the Qantas AmEx Ultimate - my anniversary was coming around, and didn't want to pay $450 to renew Qantas Ultimate without some sort of points bonus…

So in short I cancelled my original Qantas AmEx Ultimate, and then upgraded the David Jones AmEx to a new Qantas AmEx Ultimate account with 70,000 point bonus. No application or credit check was done - it was a "product transfer" with bonus points.

This was all suggested to me by the AmEx cancellation team who said they had a promotion to migrate DJ's customers before Latitude Finance takes over - YMMV but it's worth giving it a go

  • How to cancel your DJ Amex?

    • Don't cancel if you want this deal - ring them up and ask for the offer - you will need to commit to the annual fee and min spend requirements for bonus points

shame there's no additional card credit as they've done in the past on upgrades from the discovery to the ultimate.

They used to dish out the upgrade offers from discovery to ultimate every 6 months or so but I haven't had an upgrade offer for well over a year now so I'm going to have to ditch and sit out the 18 months (I've not had a DJ card).

I'll phone and try my luck though. If I was offered the above to upgrade rather than wait 18 months i'd probably take it.

  • Maybe a dumb question but really appreciated feedbacks. What types of transactions can be counted towards the "eligible" spending to meet criteria for Amex?

For example, do the payments through Paypal count? Or if I purchase gift cards through sites such as Shopback or Prezzee, or at Woolie or Coles, will such transactions count?

So many places either don't accept Amex nowadays or will charge a ridiculous surcharge for using it…

  • I haven't had any restrictions on eligible spends with AmEx - unsure about others…

  • Having an Amex DJ doesn’t disqualify you from other SUB offer for new card members, but changing from DJ to another one probably will.
If you only have DJ or you’ve closed all your other Amex and almost served your 18 months (like me), you probably want to take other normal offers first like this, this, or this + this
    Then product change your DJ

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/829355

Or you can get 120,000 and cancel your DJ card after..

    • this will record extra query on your credit profile but this deal doesn't (based on OP); which is good if you're caring about your credit score for mortgage, etc.

Keep the DJ amex. It's the only amex you can hold while not officially holding an Amex.
So can still get statement offers, insurance etc.
They no longer offer the DJ amex.

    • Exactly, theres gonna be an offer coming in soon. This was meant to happen last year until Latitude became victim to one of the biggest hacks in history.

      • and be victim of data breach again; No, Latitude is too risky and in addition, customer service is not that great (or as great as amex)

        • No! I meant theres an offer coming for everyone on current DJ Amex cards to move to Amex. Heaps of people including myself have the DJ Storecards, these will probably move across to a free annual fee rewards card later on if you dont cancel.

          • @fuzor: oh, I see. Yes, I confirmed this with operator as well and will happen in Q2 with offers to DJ card holder staying with amex - not sure about any bonus, though. Happy to continue with amex as long as no extra query will happen on my credit profile.

    • What insurance do you get with a DJs Amex?

    • Sorry I am dumb, what is the meaning " It's the only amex you can hold while not officially holding an Amex." and what is the benefit of this situation? I am holding DJ amex, and I am considering to cancel it…

      • The 18 months with no Amex card held ( for Amex bonus sign up offers to reset) doesn't apply to DJ's Amex (and it is the only exception, and no longer available). So you can still earn Amex points, get statement credit offers, shop small etc ..and then apply for a different Amex, and still be eligible for bonus sign ups at any time. It's the only Amex card that can be held that they don't consider as holding an Amex! You don't have to wait 18 months without an Amex for a sign up bonus..
        Hope that makes sense.

I called and asked for this offer. Spoke to a nice bloke who told me I was ineligible as I'm on the Amex rewards scheme not the Qantas rewards scheme that's possible on the DJ card.

He counteroffered with The AMEX Explorer card - 80k Amex, $400 travel credit, two amex lounge passes, insurance etc.

Or, I can transfer to Qantas points scheme then he could offers me the deal mentioned by OP.

    Dunno what to do.

    • I value Qantas points at 1c/point, so the value proposition for me is $700, less $450 card fee = $250 ahead (and a $450 credit for a future flight thrown in). Unsure how the value would work for AmEx points on Explorer card.

  • Operator said I needed to have NO AmEx accounts for future sign-up bonuses

Did they elaborate on this? AMEX seem to limit welcome bonuses to one per card per lifetime in other countries, I'm wondering if they're doing that here too.

    • Unsure - it was promoted to me after the AmEx operator saw my account and made the suggestion I could get a bonus.

DJ cards launch March 12, current cardholders will be migrated “mid-year” when they get sent a new Latitude card (details are v sparse rn)

  • It's very strange that as of today (04/March), AMEX has not officially offered anything to existing AMEX-DJ cardholders. All I can find are the following from AMEX and DJ respectively:

    https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/customer-service/david…
    https://www.davidjones.com/faq/david-jones-american-express-…

I personally don't mind being migrated to the DJ-Latitude card, but I want to know what my AMEX-DJ reward points will be worth…… Does someone have any suggestion about what I should do with the reward points?

That's because the official launch for the new card is in a week's time. You'll receive more information about the new card in May.

Personally I'm just going to either burn my points on stuff from DJs or transfer to Velocity when it comes to it
