and if you need the 2242 it's here: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0CP68JNT1

(I used one to upgrade a new Lenovo laptop I bought and it's been great)

Anyone seen good deals for 2tb?

  • waitting for SN740 2tb to drop

  • Right now I still use 512gb evos with 1x m.2 slot mobo.

Is there a best way to clone this to a new ssd?

  • Connectivity technology SATA

    Oppsies

  • I didn't realise you could now get 1TB on such a short nvme stick….

my Samsung 1Tbs are 3x the length.

    Any draw backs??

    • You can, I have a 2TB 2230 here even which is smaller stgill

    • +3

I just bought a WD 2TB 2230 ssd, the same dimensions, 3000MB+ read and write.
Yes you can get them in 2 TB the same dimensions.

Of course there are big draw backs:
      1. All 2230 SSDs are Dramless, which means good sequential, bad 4K random R/W;
      2. Insane amount of heat, within 10 minutes of use it can reach 70-80 degrees easily, with heatsink attached.

So if you have the room, get the 2280 with a DRAM absolutely. 2230 is for really small devices, and you should not power it on for too long sessions.

      • I'd imagine you also can't currently get 2TB 2230 TLC. Can you even get a 1TB 2230 TLC?

        • Yes you can get 2TB on 2230 TLC. The one I bought was WD SN740.
According to TechPowerUp it is indeed TLC.
          https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/western-digital-sn740-…

But please be aware that SN740 is all OEM not retail, so no retail packaging and the warranty lies with the seller not WD.

If you care about that, better spend a few more bucks and get the retail SN770M, essentially the same thing as SN740 but it comes with retail packaging and you can claim warranty from WD.
          https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/western-digital-sn770m…

        • BTW I went with SN740 only because I was in China and I can purchase a cheap extended warranty from the online platform so the warranty is not solely with the seller.
The price was very very good, $170 for a 2tb compared to double the price for a retail SN770M here.
I do NOT recommend purchasing such OEM product in Australia. You could receive anything.

          • @simonjo: Yeah sorry I should have updated my comment as I read about this a few days ago. Still while 2TB TLC 2230 do exist, they're a lot rarer with the SN770/740 and rebrands still being the only options I think. 1TB TLC 2230 are at least a bit more common. 4TB TLC 2230 don't exist and are probably still a while away.

In 2280, 2TB TLC are very easy to find, 4TB too and often at similar price per TB. 8TB TLC also exist although still generally very expensive.

Also although they might be TLC your speed will still generally be limited since putting aside the lack of DRAM cache, you're limiting the dies you can use

            • @Nil Einne: The speed is actually quite OK, even without a DRAM.
4K random is of course not ideal but day to day use I don't feel too much of a difference.
Sequential r/w is as claimed, but the biggest issue is with the heat…
              10 times hotter than a 2280 guaranteed.

  • Really love 2230. Pop them into an enclosure, you got a mighty little thing. In practice, a micro SD card with a reader is more portable, but for some reason I prefer these.
