1 Hour and 40 Minutes Connecting Flights

Hi everyone,
I am travelling back to Sydney from the Middle East, and facing a dilemma. I need help.

there is an hour and 40 minutes layover between the 2 international flights or 1 day.

do you think I can make it?
it will be at Jakarta airport, I need to collect my luggage and re-check in after customs clearance (separate tickets).
the second ticket with qanats
is 1.40 hours enough? it will come with a free business upgrade :( the other one doesn't.

Jakarta airport, I need to collect my luggage and re-check in after customs clearance (separate tickets).

Good luck OP, my money is something will go wrong (i.e., conveyor belt breakdown, etc). You can't get the tickets linked?

    • unfortunately no

      • +7

I would recommend adjusting the flights to arrive earlier (first flight) or leave later (second flight). Or just make sure you have a solid travel insurance and speed dial when something goes wrong.

        • +14

Travel insurance won't pay out for you missing your flight because you booked a ridiculously short transfer

          • @gaz3342: lol you are probably right

            • +3

              @Duckie2hh: he's definitely right.

I did the cheap business class Air Latam to Auckland with 2hrs gap to get an internal ANZ flight. Air Latam left late & flew slow. It cost me $100 extra to get the next flight.

    • Every airport has a Minimum Transfer time for domestic to domestic domestic to international and international to international connections. Travel agencies etc take this into consideration when selling routes but if there is a flight delay on your connecting flight it could put you at risk.

Fwiw I knew someone who had a 1 hr 40m layover in Brisbane transferring from virgin domestic to an international flight and they made it. That included getting their international tickets from the desk in Brisbane and taking the shuttle bus between Brisbane domestic and international terminals. Oh and the domestic flight that brought them into Brisbane also departed 20 minutes late.

PS I missed the part about separate tickets, in that case the "transfer" time doesn't exist and it is a crazy idea to attempt this.

Huge risk. Not sure worth it. Especially when you consider international flights baggage drop closes 1 hour before departure?

  • +23

    Not advisable. Things to consider:

    • Any delay in the flight landing
    • Time it takes for plane to taxi to gate
    • Time it takes for people to leave the plane
    • Time it takes to go through passport control
    • Time it takes for luggage to be available
    • Time it takes to check-in luggage again
    • Time baggage drop closes before departures
    • Time it takes to go through security
    • Time it takes to go through passport control
    • Time it takes to get to gate
    • Time gate closes before departures (some airlines 45 mins)

Even at an optimistic 10 mins each, that's not enough time, too risky and stressy.

Esp being on separate tickets means if you miss the second flight, it's all on you.

Time it takes for people to leave the plane

Can easily shave 15 seconds off that step by getting up the instant the seatbelt sign goes off and waiting in the aisle cramped in with the other power-exiters while the staff do their thing for the next 3 minutes.

      • +3

i can only assume everyone standing up and fidgeting around is also busting for a poop, like literally CROWNING

      • +1

Ha ha 'power exiters'. "I'm going to stand here awkwardly craning my neck under the overhead baggage with my arse in your face even though it would make no difference if I stayed seated"

      • Bonus points if you shoved your hand luggage up the front further then where you were sitting screwing over the people sitting there for their own overhead room.

        Remember, play to win.

    • +2

i know right, im anxious even with a 4 hour gap let alone 1 hr 40…

  • +3

She ll be right mate. no problem.

    • send it

  • +1

No don't do this, not enough time.

  • I would not be risking that short a connection even if it was all on one booking.

For separate bookings, I would be looking for something like 5 hours between the flights, and even then there is risk.

    • +6

I;d definitely risk it if it was on the one booking - but on seperate bookings it is cutting it VERY tight.

      • Just depends on the situation (eg. how badly I need to be in the destination on time). I would need to know way more about the airport and frequency of replacement flights before risking it usually.

    • +4

on one booking you wouldn't need to - clear customs, collect your bags, re check in, etc

I flew two different airlines on a three legged trip from australia to brazil (all star alliance) and my bags were checked through till the end

bookings on one PNR with the same alliance will check through till the end.

Booking different airlines on different alliances with stupidly short transfer times is asking for a big huge disaster

      • +1

on one booking you wouldn't need to - clear customs, collect your bags, re check in, etc

Depends on the middle country. US for example, you need to clear customs, collect baggage, etc, at first point of entry regardless of whether it is a transit (including international transit) or a stop.

Pretty sure Aus is the same (although I haven't done international transits through here).

Don't think you need to in Japan for international transits. No idea for Indonesia.

      • how did you make 3 different bookings rolled up into one PNR?
did you book 3 bookings separately, then call one of the airlines to combine it with the other two bookings?
does it only work if all airlines in the same alliance, i.e. in this case star alliance?

I assume one PNR means your checked-in baggage can go all the way to the final destination?

        • Same booking, 2 different airlines, booked all as one via a redemption award with Singapore Airlines

The two airlines were Thai and Ethiopian route Syd>BKK>Add>Gru

It's the same for one world, if it's all on the one booking and all one world airlines it'll be check through to the end unless there's something weird like Kelly mentions re USA

  • do you think I can make it?

    No way…

  • Do you think you can make it?

No. It's not worth the risk, time, or resources if things don't go as planned.

The long walk from the gate to visa on arrival, immigration, bags, customs, to driver (who was waiting outside the terminal) took me 50 minutes, when I was in Jakarta in November. That was without a line for the visa on arrival and immigration. Only 5 minutes wait for customs. Jakarta International terminal is huge, spent most of that time walking

  • -1

you can - nothing is impossible

    • except what OP is suggesting……that is impossible

  • +1

do you think I can make it?

not even on a fantastic run will you make it

Don't forget check in for your second flight probably closes 1hr before the flight - that leaves you with 40min to get off the plane, go through customs, get your bag, get to the check in counter, battle the line and check in

Even for domestic flights were I don't need to do all the shit you would have to do for an international flight, I still give myself 2hours layover to account for delays and other random shit to go wrong

  • Not on Etihad I hope?

Keep the flight with the biz upgrade - move the other flight even if it costs you. It would be worth it for the upgrade.

  • Start looking at hotels in Jakarta.

  • Jose says no way

Have been through customs/immigration in 30 min a few times. But it’s also taken me 2 hr at other times. For me, the biggest X factor is how long your luggage will take to come out. Sometimes it’s just really really slow and there’s nothing you can do about it.

So this trip is definitely doable. But it’s just not worth the risk.

  • Separate tickets? no way. You will have to drop-off your bags 60 minutes before departure. Meaning customs, walking and bag collection in 40 mins.

I wouldn't do that in Australia let alone CGK.

  • Tell the respective airline(s) of the problem & you need expedited transfer between flights.

    • Yeah sure.. i did that last time and a limo drove me with my luggage from the arriving plane straight to the departing one.

  • Which passport do you have? You'll have to pay VOA in Jakarta.

  • I did something similar but lost my flight for about 30 minutes because of flight delays.

If it works, it works beautifully.

If it doesn't is awfully annoying (… that permanent "what was I thinking" yelling inside your head).

  • +1

Definitely too short, unless the flights are with the same airline and on the same ticket.
All it takes is a slight delay or late arrival of the inward flight and you're toast.

Travelling with the same airline should be ok though - if the first flight is delayed, they'll do something to help out with the connection. Different airlines, and you're on your own.

I haven't travelled Malaysian Airlines since they screwed me over - late departure, assured me everything would be taken care of at destination - then at destination, baggage delayed and damaged, connecting flight missed, accommodation forfeited and they completely dismissed ALL of these (even the damaged bag, since I didn't complain promptly due to running to miss my connection which was closed. Ground staff, who supposedly were going to help me - AWOL. I wouldn't have minded if they'd fixed the issues, but they chose to avoid them, and I've done the same to them ever since. They've lost thousands, quite literally, in airfares and bad publicity and reviews. Same bucket as Samsung for me as far as customer service and responsibly dealing with faults and issues.

Anyways, on reflection, I wouldn't risk such a short transfer in any event. Too many things can go wrong, and if you're a worrier, just get a longer connection for piece of mind.

If you only had carry on luggage, it may be possible to transit between flights in that time frame (if the travel gods are willing). However, with check in luggage, I think it would be impossible to catch the second flight. The only solution would be to reschedule one of your flights.

    Djakarta International Airport transit info:

  • If you are traveling on an Australian passport, you will also need to get a Visa on arrival to enter Jakarta. Thankfully this process is quite quick at the airport and immigration queues are usually not too bad. You can make it if everything goes perfectly. That's a big if.

  • +2

I had a two hour wait at Hong Kong airport, didn't need to recheck luggage, but I did fall asleep in the terminal, luckily woke up just in time to catch the flight. I'd probably still be in Hong Kong today if I kept sleeping.

  • I wouldn't risk, especially in Jakarta airport and dont forget you need to go thru immigration and customs what might take who knows how long time.
Your 1.40 is scheduled gap on ideal conditions, dont risk it, too short id say considerning you need to do check in also.

  • What idiot booked those flights with 1.40hr between the flights?

Don't worry if you get stuck, Jakarta at election time; no worries.

  • If the first flight is delayed. Good luck.
No way for anyone but the lord to know this beforehand

  • Lol 1:40 layover in Jakarta 😂

  • For what it's worth i flew in via Jakarta yesterday and it's slow going; they had lots of the airport T2 IIRC under construction; so had to manually check everything; i.e. dude had a paper list; "is your name here somewhere?" just to go thru the transit gate; also also FYI T2 Sapphire lounge is a dry lounge so no beers; I had a 3 hour connection there and it felt like a lifetime; but that was without having to re-check luggage; I'd suggestion you would be cutting it fine.

  • Yes if in one booking - airline will put in 100% effort in ensuring you don't miss the transit as they will need to rebook you and pay for your hitel overnight, and you don't need to worry about customs/luggage

If on separate bookings, no chance in hell

  • sorry but i highly doubt you will make it.
I have had similar connecting flights and have never made it, so now I will never pick a flight that has them.

  • Too risky for recheck-in. How do people get business upgrade anyway ? I've got it only once and that too was a last minute surprise with Etihad.

  • I need to collect my luggage and re-check in after customs clearance

I stopped reading after this… No way you're going to make it…

  • A friend of mine had a 3h layover in Bali a few weeks ago that was reduced to 2h because of a delay with the first flight and only made it to the departing flight gate with 10 minutes to spare, you're SOL.
