I think it's that you spend at least $60 for 3 times, then you can get $20 back

  • +8

"- Offer only valid where $60 or more has been charged to your Card 3 times to receive one $20 credit."

    Spend $180 to receive $20

  • I see a different offer:

…spend $60 or more, in one transaction, in-app or in-person at EG Fuels by 31/03/2024 to receive a $5 credit, up to maximum of 3 times

Offer is limited to a maximum of $15 credit per Card and $5 credit per eligible transaction.

So only 8.33% vs 11.11% in OP’s but don’t need to fill up thrice to get any cash back.

    • +5

Don’t need to fill up at all, just buy 3x $60 wish gift cards

      • @Coops1 Have you tried doing 3x transactions in one day to get 3x credits back?

      • Do they offer $60 gift cards? I see only $10, $20, $50, and $100 gift cards.

        • +1

Wish gift cards, they are variable load.

      • +1

You can buy a single $180 gift card and do 3x payments of $60 .

Rubbish offer - F off amex for this one.

    • +2

11% off your petrol or even groceries via wish cards. Show me a better offer!?

    • +2

      Should see my rubbish offers
Wish I could at least hide them…

  • Do they even have EG servos on the west coast?

I can see 7 Perth EG stations popping up on the EG Location finder. All EG stations around Australia also pop up on the Ampol Location finder under "EG Ampol (suburb/town name)".

EG operates the Petrol Stations formerly known as "Woolworths Caltex" under the EG Ampol brand.

I got an Ampol offer instead of EG but even after reading the Ampol wiki I'm still a little confused on which station accepts which giftcard and such its a mess.

All Ampol service stations (excluding EG Ampol service stations) would accept that offer you have, as long as:

      • The Ampol service station you are at accepts American Express. All Ampol Foodary service stations I have been to accept American Express with no surcharge, but I reckon there are some Ampol franchisees that choose not to accept American Express (or accept it with a surcharge).

      • You are paying instore (and not via FuelPay on the Ampol app).

In terms of gift cards and acceptance, that became a lot easier with EG Ampol starting to accept AmpolCash Digital gift cards earlier this week:

Payment Method Accepted at Ampol Foodary? Accepted at EG Ampol? Accepted at other Ampol franchisees?
AmpolCash gift cards (physical) Yes Yes Yes, as long as a PIN is set on the gift card. If not, it is not accepted at outdoor payment terminals.1
AmpolCash gift cards (digital) Yes Yes Participating service stations only.2
Woolworths Group gift cards (e.g. Everyday WISH, Essentials) No Yes No
Everyday Rewards Dollars No Service stations on mainland Australia only No

      1. Outdoor payment terminals are also referred to as automated fuel dispensers or pay-at-the-pump machines. You usually only find these at unattended service stations (e.g. truck stops); here is one example operated by an Ampol franchisee.

      2. Participating service stations are marked as AmpolCash Digital accepted under the Facilities section on the Ampol store locator.

      • So it sounds like I can't go there and buy $60 wish giftcard 5 times like I could with an EG Ampol unless Ampol foodary still sells wish giftcards but just doesn't accept them? Idk I've never ever filled up at an Ampol.

Are the Ampol cards variable load?

So it sounds like I can't go there and buy $60 wish giftcard 5 times like I could with an EG Ampol unless Ampol foodary still sells wish giftcards but just doesn't accept them?

My understanding is that Ampol Foodary service stations do not sell WISH gift cards.

Are the Ampol cards variable load?

          No.

AmpolCash physical gift cards are sold in $25, $50, $100, $250 and $500 denominations (and I think only Ampol Foodary service stations sell them, but I could be wrong). However, when you visit a particular Ampol service station, the denominations they have in stock may differ. For example, during the last 5% off deal, I visited four Ampol Foodary service stations and found that only one of them stocked the $500 denomination.

If you really want to purchase an AmpolCash physical gift card and maximise your offer, you should be fine purchasing $300 worth of AmpolCash physical gift cards in one transaction (e.g. $250 + $50), because there is nothing in the terms of your offer to say you must charge a minimum of $60 five times to your American Express card. Also, if the attendant forces you to split your purchase into multiple transactions, you should still be fine (as I accidentally found out myself).

If AmpolCash physical gift cards do not really interest you, you could check out your local Ampol Foodary to see what kind of other gift cards they sell. Some of them only sell AmpolCash physical gift cards, whereas others also sell a random assortment of third-party gift cards. For example, some sell Amazon gift cards, some sell Ultimate gift cards, some sell Perfect eftpos gift cards, some sell PlayStation Store gift cards…

          • @WookieMonster: The way I read it is if I spend $60 or more I will get $5 back, so spending $300 would only get me $5. so 1.67% back instead of 8.33% back in those two scenarios.

            • +1

@denserham: I can see why you read it that way, but in reality, that has not been the experience of other people with offers worded like your one.

              Example 1

              Example 2

              Example 3

              • @WookieMonster: Yeah interesting I am assuming because mine is missing a term similar to
"Offer only valid where $60 or more has been charged to your Card 5 times to receive one $25 credit."
is what you mean by wording?

                • @denserham: Correct.

It is actually unusual these days for AMEX cashback offers to specify that you need to charge your card a specific number of times to receive the full statement credit on offer.

If you prefer to be cautious (which is fair enough), your suggestion below of doing a “test” purchase of $120 (or $125) is a good idea. If I was a betting person, spending $120 or $125 in one transaction at Ampol would net you a $10 statement credit.

                  • @WookieMonster: My offer was Spend $60, get $5 back up to 3x - I rolled the dice on 1x $180 transaction and only got paid out a $5 credit. My specific terms and conditions (which I didn't clearly read until after I'd bought given previous experiences with these kinds of AmEx Statement offers) stated:

…spend $60 or more, in one transaction, in-app or in-person at EG Fuels by 31/03/2024 to receive a $5 credit, up to maximum of 3 times
Offer is limited to a maximum of $15 credit per Card and $5 credit per eligible transaction.

I am going to follow up with AmEx CS just to roll the dice but since the T&Cs are very clear I may well be out of luck.

          • @WookieMonster: I just clicked on your links and it seems like it might be possible to spend 300 in one transaction and get $25 back but not guaranteed. I could try spending $120 and see if I get $10.

Glad I'm cancelling my Amex what a joke, spend $180 to get back $20 if you can even find this obscure station

  • Did anyone get the credit back?

I did the spend but its taking an unusually long time to credit. I simultaneously had $5back off each $60+ transaction up to 3times…

    • I did 3x $60 transactions at three different service stations across ten days, with the last transaction on 26 March. The $20 credit was processed onto my account on 28 March.

  • I spent $60 x 3 on 19 March and received $20 credit on 21 March. You may need to follow up.
