[QLD] Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD MY23 (Old Model, Less than 50km on Odometer) $63,570 + On-Road Cost @ Tesla

2620

Prices are going Down Down Down @ Tesla

With rebates in some states this makes a good enough car with good range specially that can go from 0-100 in 4.4 seconds if that's what tickles you. Me personally would not buy anything that's not LFP.

Please note this is not the Highland which is MY23.5

@choofa: This deal is limited to a few cars of the old model left in stock in Australia. It's not going to affect resale much, more broadly.

        • For reference, Drive Aus ranked Tesla model 3 number 2 on their list for 2023 cars with best resale

To capture a snapshot of each model's resale value, AutoGrab used its pricing algorithm to ascertain the retail value of each model from 2020 to 2023 with an average kilometre interval of 15,000km a year.
That price was then compared to the manufacturer's listed retail price to determine the retained value.

The problem is this compared used car prices with current MRRP. So if you buy a car for 110k, Tesla drops price to 100k and they’ve scrapped data from carsales showing cars for 90k on average, it will say only 10% depreciation from MRRP.

          But what have you lost?

    • +6

huh…4 years into ownership and last time I checked I'd lost about 6km or range. Not losing any sleep over it.

    • +1

Lol. If that was true I would be picking up a cheap Tesla.

    • +2

Resale of early models have dropped because Tesla has lowered the retail price and there are government incentives for new cars. When a used car and a brand new one are the same price, why would you buy used?

Battery degradation is at expected (low) rates, and out-of warranty battery replacement is extremely rare.

    • I agree but extend this to all EVs. I'm not totally convinced it'll change but it also won't be much of a factor when everyone has to buy them anyway. What will be will be.

How much brown coal per 100 km does this baby get?

    • +7

kg of co2 per 100km? Much less than an ice car. Even if you've magically worked out a way to exclusively use brown coal electricity to power your car.

  • +8

Also the old model has the advantage of an indicator stick.

    • +2

And parking sensors that actually work.

      • Although parking is probably the weakest part of the model 3.

  • Good deal 🤝

  • +6

Anyone in Brissy that wants to experience one then reach out to me… I have the LR with acceleration boost and it does 100km/hr in 3.8seconds.

These models are much nicer than the newer highland which have a plain front bumper, no steering stalks etc and it looks quite ordinary as well as being slower!

I have a few aftermarket accessories installed like auto frunk, full CF body kit, rear passenger screen, tilt front screen, display cluster on steering wheel column.

    • +3

I have a LR too and I agrree that price now is absolute bargain for a great car!

    • I really like the look of the Highland styling changes personally - but I'm less convinced about the removal of the stalks, and the parking sensor "upgrade"

    • That's very subjective. I find the Highland fascia much cleaner than the old frog face. The interior is also a big step up with sound proofing and ambient lighting.

      • +2

The ventilated seats are the game changer. The real flaw in the old model 3 was that on a long drive on a hot day the air con can only do so much. it just wasn’t amazing. Now it is!

        • But you do know that the AC in this car is atrocious right? It can't even compare to the AC in a basic Corolla or Mazda 3. Now the same AC is expected to cool the PVC seats as well? That's a big ask. The seats are crap as they are plastic. Need to reapholster the seats with real leather and your body will be praising you for ever

          • -1

@Logical: Yeah I’ve got one. The AC is not atrocious but it’s a weakness given the glass roof and can’t properly handle the Aussie summer. With the sun shade in the front roof section and venting from the app and pre cooling just a minute before driving it’s not so bad. It’s definitely a weakness but the seats are disappointing though. On a long drive they just get hot and sweaty.

            • +1

@choofa: I can tell you from my one week of highland that ventilated seats are so, so, so cold (even on 1 out of 3 setting) on the back compared to that weak front AC wind :). To get a similar degree of cooling I have to turn up the cooling level on the front vent much higher as my back is much colder than the wind coming to my face.

I was just watching the Tesla Tom (ludicrous feed) - now he should be called BYD Tom I guess on Youtube. He did a comparison with the BYD seal temp with its silver coated top and it was noticeably cooler. So I'm thinking of getting the silver coated shade installation on his video!

              • @youngchul76: Is there an auto setting on the seats? The heated seats on the old mod auto adjust to the climate control. Surely the cooling works the same????

                • @choofa: not sure, there are three levels (just like heated) you can adjust the seat fan

    • +3

ive just had my highland RWD delivered last week.
here is my one cent - surprisingly, indicator is absolutely not an issue after a few days. your muscle memory is very, very quick at adapting.

The reason I changed from old model was because of the rear screen (not me, my kids actually who wanted it badly) and ride quality (old model I felt was a bit rough although I got used to that pretty quickly as well). I'm still not convinced whether I made the right decision though, as this adaptive suspension is making it feel less "adhered to the road". Old model I could really feel it stuck to the road and grippy, whereas the highland does have superior passenger comfort but I feel like I've lost a bit of that "stuck to the road" feel. But I'm pretty sure I'll get used to it quickly.

Interior is a bit of mix bag. I like the LED lighting etc but the loss of wood trim around and replaced with that fabric like material.. I think I'll get used to it as well :)

Overall, much quieter and better comfort, but I do see the advantage of the old model being more "stuck to the road" and grippy feel.

indicator stalks though - ABSOLUTELY not an issue. don't let that sway your decision.

      • Is the grip difference also the tyres?
The old model had performance tyres.
        The highland has eco tyres

        • not sure - Youtube reviewers from UK were commenting on that as a possibility (Hankook tyres) but mine came with Michelin again (I can't remember exact model/name but it was different from my 2022 model Micheline)

I'm sure I'll get used to it, but there is something about losing that hard tuned suspension in place of a softer one ! It's definitely different.

        • It most likely is. The grip on the PS4 is pretty good but you pay the price with the ride and the atrocious tyre roar. Turning the car in an undercover car park will show how bad the tyre noise is. I reckon the reduced interior noise of the new model is down mostly due to the tyre change. I definitely will change mine when mine needs replacing.

      • It took 10 minutes to install an aftermarket 7.1" screen in the centre for the rear passengers on my older version model 3. Kids can watch YouTube and play games.

        • can you search albums and songs with those aftermarket ones? really disappointed with Tesla ones you can only flick through the current album or playlist not search

BYD got better value than Tesla.

    • -4

bYD for old people who doesnt have Iphone

      • How does BYD compare to roborock?

      • +1

Both of those takes are stupid

      • +4

Yet BYD supports Apple CarPlay and Tesla M3 doesn't.

        • +2

That’s only good because the UI is poor in the BYD. It’s like comparing a cheap android tablet to an iPad.
The UX in a Tesla is brilliant. You don’t need android auto or Apple CarPlay.
Also the Apple CarPlay is wired only. Very annoying to have to plug a phone in every time you get in

          • +2

            @choofa:

Very annoying to have to plug a phone in every time you get in

Most EV drivers plug it in when they park it in the garage, is that not very annoying?

            • @cloudy: Absolutely (though I plug mine in every 3-4 days). A pain in the neck compared to filling up a car every 3-4 weeks with a hybrid.

          • @choofa: Im with you. I suspect most of the BYD keyboard warriors have never driven or even sat in a BYD - they're just lording on them for their cheap price. I very much dislike the BYD wacky and weird interior designs (Atto 3 door release anyone….) and the UI on their screens is an abomination (to say the least), so lucky they have Carplay…..

The BYD interior controls are all loose and tacky, so i dont mind that Tesla have tried to completely change the approach - it is what it is (love it or hate it on both sides).

I'm curious how BYD get the prices down outside of the battery advantage. Many car makers build their cars in china, however they use the long proven and developed processes they have spent decades refining. They still use the same labour (and cost) to manufacture it. So I wonder where BYD cut the costs so heavily…..? Maybe design?

            • +3

@WetWaffle: We have an Atto 3. It’s pretty good. My wife loves it.
Tesla button door release vs atto 3 quirky handles… I’m not sure either worry me. Both interiors have their oddities. I like both though.
The Tesla is hands down a way better experience. The phone key, walkway lock, one pedal driving, responsiveness, autosteer… it’s just far superior in many ways

            • +1

@WetWaffle: Word on the street is that their government subsidy is fairly significant and Musk made a comment that unless trade barrier/some sort of intervention from EU/other markets they will negatively impact car industry because they are basically trying to sink the competition with these "discounted" mass produced EVs.

I've driven seal performance before going for highland, it was quite a solid car but like you, I couldn't do the interior. It felt a bit too…. flashy? coming from Tesla with clean interior and just "get in and go" philosophy it was a bit of a shock to come back to "start" button and gear stalks (bit of a weird design that one..). The car felt very quiet and "smooth" though. I could see why people love it, it's a very different car to Tesla's zippy, minimal, go-kart like drive feel. I think this is what people refer to as more "luxurious" feel. Even on a hard acceleration from standstill it's got some sort of "controlled" acceleration, quite different from Tesla.

In the end I thought I'd just go with safe choice as Seal had just come on the market but I don't doubt they will snatch a lot of potential first EV buyers from the established brand.

        • only wired though! :)
          no wireless CarPlay

          • @youngchul76: Good point also.

Tesla - despite not having carplay, has an excellent interface which is designed for driving. Once you start using it you realise how easy it is to function while operating the car. The BYD literally have a normal Android interface (even when swapping apps you legit have a full page flip app swap screen pop up - i am surprised its actually legal given how much effort is required to take your attention off the road to operate it).

    • -2

      Be quiet 50 cent army

    • -4

Not really. BYD use crap batteries which are slow to charge and discharge, the car is basically slow compared to a Tesla.

      Same deal with the engine.

Not even worth talking about the rest of the tech because they are decades apart.

Resale value alone makes it a no brainer with Chinese cars depreciating like milk.

BYD do have nice styling though.

      • Ignorant Tesla fan boy spotted. I guess in your mind every EV is a inferior copy of your Tesla. This is why Teslas get keyed and cut off in public.

        • -1

          Lol I hit nerve

Facts hurt. I don't own a Tesla or plan to btw, I admire the tech though.

          • +3

@jaimex2: Nah no nerve hit. just people like you with 0 clue about those EVs make utter braindead statement like "slow discharge batteries" and "engines" with claims of depreciation when BYD is only been around just over a year. You think that crap that you just spewed is "Facts" is borderline laughable. i was a Tesla S owner for many years and wife drives a model Y, Sold the S recently and got the BYD Seal performance. what you say makes no sense if you did basic EV research.

It's arrogant clueless "Tesla admirers" like you who doesn't know the difference between "engine" and "motor" that gives owners like us a bad name.

  • +3

Byd seagull plz, heard they come with sodium batteries and under $20k 😬

    • You not in China

      • Exactly. You'll be lucky to get Seagull for under AUD $30K here.

    • AU$13-21k in China & $18K in Thailand (LHS drive as in AU) but safety will not be approved here, as we have monster 4WD/Utes to compete with - for life :(
BYD Dolphin had to be upgraded for safety with increased price :(
I'm waiting for the beautiful BYD Seagull as well :)

  • -2

Why are these here? A real bargainer would either buy 30k car(if new) or a second hand. No way is 70k a bargain.

    • +2

What if it was Ferrari for 70k? Would it be a bargain then?

      • Depends if you enjoy paying $6k for an oil change.

        • +4

A real ozbargainer would flip it instantly if they could get a Ferrari for 70k so oil change not an issue

          • @illusion99: It would be a fairly beat up Ferrari if it were $70k. Not something you'd just roll out of the garage and enjoy 100kms before flipping.

            • @plmko: Well if we are being realistic here. I'm just fantasizing

        • most exotic service fees are capped and most of them now include it in the price
no where near 6k mate. it would range from 1.6k to 2k depending on the model
          major service around 6k

    • +4

The price is $64k, which is $8k cheaper than list price (albiet for the outgoing model). That's basically used car pricing for a brand new car - which makes it a bargain (something bought or offered for sale at a desirable price)

It's a particularly good deal when you look at the performance, which is sufficient to blow the doors off some pretty exotic sports cars….in a straight line at least.

    • +1

Ozb dream car, that's why there are so many upvotes lol

      • Haha. Please dream a little bigger Ozbargain.

  • -1

Whatever you save in initial outlay will be felt in the resale value compared to the new model. The new model looks half decent, this on the other hand is only better looking than the model y of all EVs on the road

    • -1

Lol, newer model is a cross between a polestar and a Volvo. Good luck with the resale of that. At least the older version is better all around, highland version has cheaped out materials everywhere you look. Just look at that 🤮 steering wheel, plain front bumper, narrow headlights, flimsy and basic plastic dashboard etc. older version is tougher and faster.

      • +1

All of those things you described are subjective design quibbles, and you’ve failed to consider all of the actual improvements Tesla have made to the MY23.5.

        • What actual improvements? You haven't noted any, probably as they are subjective. It was primarily a cost cutting exercise to improve profits for Tesla.

          • +1

            @Logical:

            • Improved drag coefficient through aero changes (greater range efficiency, particularly on highways)
            • Panel gap inconsistencies have been addressed through design changes (namely the rear trunk / light assembly)
            • Updated processor and thinner bezel on the display (pretty minor but reviews are saying it's noticeably snappier)
            • Rear seat display and ambient lighting (I don't care much for this, but it's a thing)
            • Ventilated seats (very good)
            • Every window uses acoustic insulating glass (as opposed to just the fronts on the outgoing)
            • Sound deadening improved (road noise a common complaint with the outgoing, has now been significantly improved)
            • "Frequency-adaptive" dampers (improves noise and vibration)
            • Overall improvement to build quality (reduced creaking and rattling being the main consensus)
    • +2

Did elon make u pay more tax?

      • Elon doesn't pay tax member

        • Source?

        • +1

He paid $11bn in tax in 2021…
          How much did you pay?

Tesla itself pay very little tax, but that's basically the thing that almost every US company does that are in a similar boat as Tesla, which is entirely above board.

    • you must be a very silly individual

  • +1

Even the Highland long range isnt lfp… The high land long range uses the same battery as previous model.. so this is a decent deal

    • LFP is cheaper, but lower performance and less energy dense. That's why they only fit the LFP to the RWD (single motor) model - it helps keep entry level costs down.

The NCA battery is a very similar physical size as the LFP, but due to better density it has more capacity. It's fitted to Long Range and Performance where additional sustained output performance is required for dual motors.

  • +3

Just here for the comments and waiting for the regulars to come in sooking about everything Tesla.

    • +4

I honestly read some of the comments and think to myself some people get WAY too upset about the choice of a car a complete stranger has made

      • Purely out of spite and jealously.

    • +5

      Confirmation bias I would assume.

      • +3

Yea, there’s a bias out there.

Which is why I won’t drive a Tesla, real or perceived you’re more likely to encounter dck behaviour towards you just coz the brand of car.

        • Took a Tesla Uber once - he said pretty much that - at least daily gets a$$holes upset at his car choice or apparent “green” showing off.

    • +3

I don't drive like a d@#k but once you taste the silent EV acceleration, it's quite addictive! :)

      • -1

Or good for holding everyone up at barely the limit and then screaming through orange lights.

        • +1

haha! yes i agree we do that sometimes! :)

    • +2

If you smell dung everywhere you go… check your own shoes.

      • No, it's actually in my pants.

    • fixed it for you - Why is it that every driver on the road that drives a Ford Ranger is a d#ck?

    • +2

I don't think you know what "Vapourware" means.

      • +1

        Bring community notes to ozbargain

      • This car is a robotaxi yeah? It makes you 30k a year but they sell it to you for 60k for some reason.

Wonder how the million robotaxis that were on road end of 2020 are going? Weird that I haven’t seen any yet.

    • +2

Imagine using the word "vapourware" in a context that proves that you have no idea what it means.

This is a run-out sale on the outgoing model, being sold at a discount to clear existing stock - something that is utterly commonplace in every dealership in the country.

      • -2

hows your self driving mode which you pay extra for?

  • -7

Awesome. Been waiting for this deal. Bought 5. Thanks OP
