    • Nice. I have OnePass so I might switch to that, like 5 years from now.

People still use this knowing it damages washing machines?

    • +1

      I hadn’t heard this before - how?

      • +3
      • +1

Article is littered with environment propaganda. They don't recommend it, but will still recommend 2 other "environmentally-friendly" alternatives though if you still feel the need to use them.. 😅

        • -2

However, if being more environmentally friendly is important to you, we'd advise you just to ditch fabric softeners completely.

Environment Propaganda? Seriously? Are you a bot?

          • +1

@Pacify: You copied less than a paragraph here, SERIOUSLY? 😅

How about pasting the WHOLE article and pointing out every mention of the environment? 😂

We know you can't be a bot with such a poor response like that. 🤣

        • People don't maintain their washing machines like they should, hell most people overload them way past what you're supposed to, they just see 8kg capacity washing machine and think it means 8kg for every type of cycle when you're supposed to only put like 1/4 of that in some quicker cycles.
          Most people do not care.
If you're not properly maintaining your washing machine which most people don't, products like this will eventually clog it up or cause a much less efficient clean as well as lower the lifespan of your clothes and machine. Don't use the environmentally friendly ones either.

      • -2

        You do have Google right?

        • Googling rubbish, you get rubbish, I didn't get the theory behind clogging/damaging the washing machine with fabric softener lol

    • +21

I switched to using white vinegar and I find it works very well. It makes my clothes a lot softer than fabric softener ever did (and for anyone wondering, no, it doesn't make your clothes smell like vinegar)

      • +5

Came here to say just this ^^^

      • Does it damage the rubber seals?

        • +1

Vinegar does not damage 'rubber' seals, which is why it is in plastic bottles, but I find a splash (maybe 1/4 cup) works great. When you first open the door when finished you get a very faint whiff of vinegar which lasts less than 5 seconds. Then nothing but clean fresh clothes and no ruined washer!

          • +2

            @jaclarkaus:

Vinegar does not damage 'rubber' seals, which is why it is in plastic bottles

All plastic is not the same, vinegar comes in HDPE bottles which are chemical/acid resistant. I'd not be concerned about the main washing machine drum as it will be highly dilute then, but the softener compartment, and any tubing/seals it has. If the washing machine maker never envisaged someone putting acid into the softener department it may not be resistant .

The same way you should not put washing machine filters in the sun to dry/destroy bacteria, the washing machine maker maker most likely never thought the internals of their washing machine would be baking in the sun and so won't be UV resistant

        • we use double strength and dilute, youre only using a splash per wash. A gulp is overkill

      • +1

Also came here to say this. Fabric softener is not only bad for your washing machine and clothes, it makes towels less absorbent. Just use ~50ml of white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser and you're good to go.

      • ^^^ support this. I was dumb and used it in the past without reading online. My expensive absorbent towels no longer as absorbent. And my exercise clothes…. oh god it was bad

    • +1

if you are worried about fabric softener, detergent is much more corrosive … put some of each on a piece of aluminum and leave it for a couple of weeks.

      • +2

But no one is leaving full strength softener or detergent on their clothes or in their machine for a couple of weeks.
It's diluted with water and only in use for a short period of time.
I only use it to make the clothes smell good.
        Each to their own :)

      • It's not the corrosion that is the problem, it's the clogging up

    • +3

Lol i been using this for like 14years and no damage to my washing machine 😅

      • +2

Hasn’t our mum’s been using it for a long long time?

        • +2

For sure, probable been using for years.

Im not sure what kind of machines these guys
using, never had clogging or any other issue.

Maybe bad manufacturer design on those machines.

          • @boomramada: I’ve been using it in my 10yr old LG front loader - no probs so far. I remember mum had her Simpson top loader for 25 years and no blockages. Having said that technology today is designed not to last that long

            • +1

@J B S: My current one is Electrolux, been working for 14y, no issues with fabric softener, no seal or clogging issues.
But family member got a BOSH, had a seal issues, googled for reasons and said no more fabric softener, maybe just unrelated to fabric softener.

          • +1

@boomramada: It's not the machine, it's user error.

Everyone falling for the propaganda are probably just really dirty, dumb sheep who think they can live like dirty
homeless hippies but everythings okay because they don't hurt the environment (in disguise of hurting your washing machine). 🤣

IT'S THEIR FILTH CLOGGING UP THE MACHINES.

            • @WasBargain: Wait, so they're dirty, but then it's their filth clogging up the machines?
Which means they're washing their clothes.

And not using fabric softener somehow means they're also not using washing powder or liquid to wash clothes?

Also, doesn't fabric softener make clothes poorer at absorbing moisture, which causes sweat to be trapped instead of evaporated, making you smell like a dirty homeless hippie?

Fabric softener is meant to be put in the washing machine, please stop drinking it.

              • @NobalaKoba: It does go in the washing machine..

Just because you wash once a month doesn't rid you of the fact you're a dirty homeless hippy..?

1 month of Burning Man filth will do that to any washing machine..

    • +1

I didn't know it was bad for the machine.

I knew it made fabric less absorbent so was not good to use on towels.

  • +1

nah I'd rather not damage my washing machine

  • +2

Every since I stopped using fabric softener my clothes have been softer

  • Never used fabric softener for our or kids clothes and the clothes have always been fine.

  • No chance… Softener absolutely destroyed my machine and business shirts.

    • What brand/model machine is it?

  • +2
    • Thanks, i needed one, they smell good too.

  • +1

That price should be for the omo laundry detergent or powder too. Look at ALDI $2.75 per kg powder.

  • Now that we are on the laundry subject.

Can someone please post good deals or bulk purchase of laundry sanitiser.
I have been using Dettol 2 litre bottles but I cannot find them anywhere anymore.

    Alternatives and suggestions are welcome!

    • +1

Nappysan/Vanish is anti-bacterial says on the pink bottle. I combine a little bit with Omo in the detergent tray. I bought 3kg I think for $22 from recent ozb deal posted

      • Bought. Will give it a try.

        • +1

We buy it $4.50 a litre from Aldi. Sometimes they will have bulk 3lt on sale.

    • Why you need them that much? Your cloths are that dirty ?😬

    • +1

      Aldi has a good alternative.

  • Gonna give a few weeks without softener after reading the comments

  • I used Dryer Balls and add some essentials oils on them to give the clothes a good after smell - items I use below

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B075DD4SJ1?th=1

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0BB16QWD2

The Balls help make everything fluffy and dry - and the oil makes the rainbows

Used fabric softwner forever, and will continue to, and never had a problem with my 2 washing machines in over 2 decades. I even like it on towels but just use less, i find them too stiff otherwise.

    • +1

you were not meant to do it for towels but I do it too haha
