Question about Google Maps for Android

Does anyone know if Google Maps for Android has red light/speed camera alerts for Australian roads?
I have searched extensively for the answer but there is a lot of conflicting information.
Also, I can't find anything relevant in Google Maps settings.

Google Maps has integrated speed camera alerts for Australian roads. Users can now receive notifications about speed camera locations while navigating. Additionally, users have the ability to report mobile speed camera locations, which will be displayed on the map along with the most recent sighting time ²³. Recently, an update to Android Auto and Google Maps introduced audible alerts as users approach speed or red light cameras⁴. So, if you're using Google Maps on your Android device in Australia, you'll benefit from these safety features! 🚗📸

    @jv
Thanks, I read all of those links when I was searching for the answer.
I have the latest version of Google Maps installed and I don't get the alerts.
I can't find anything in settings to enable the alerts.

    • It does have alerts however many cameras aren't there. There's also user reported alerts e.g. mobile speed cameras. I had a Thinkware dashcam which had traffic camera alerts and I found it had most cameras except for the absolute newest.

  • +4

    Yes,

Go to Settings > Navigation Settings > Sound & Voice heading > Mute state sub heading > select 'Alerts only' or 'Unmuted'

When you drive, you can see a little orange circle with a camera icon in it indicating it's some type of camera.

But be aware, not all cameras are on the app, I've noticed quite a few cameras not on there.

I wonder if they now share that data with Waze?

I prefer the 'look' of Waze to Google maps for driving…

    • Well all the data belongs to Google now. I wonder if they would bother sharing that data in Australia. I prefer Apple Maps tbh, mostly because Google has enough data on me, and I like my male Siri voice. Makes me feel like I'm driving with a boyfriend, cheerfully giving me directions.

You the same guy that got done for running a red light?

Just don't run red lights and you'll be fine

    • @coffeeinmyveins
      Not me.

    • +2

I don't understand why people care to know where red light cameras are. Are they planning to deliberately run red lights if they know there isn't a camera installed?

      • +5

Are they planning to deliberately run red lights

No, but you might brake harder at the red lights to stop when they change from green, knowing there is a camera there…

The amount of time they stay on yellow is not consistent.

        • You mean accelerate harder?

          • +1

@donga100: Not if there is a red light camera…

Not worth the risk of getting fined, even if it is safer to drive through.

          • +1

@donga100: Depends if it's also a speed a camera. And apparently it depends if you think it is only one or the other.

I like to know why the other cars on the road suddenly start driving 10-20km under the limit, then drive 10-20km over the limit suddenly to catch the 1-2 seconds they lost.

      • Well a lot of red light cameras are speed cameras too (in WA at least) so considering they ping you for doing 2km/h over (1km/h tolerance) it's good to know

  • @hasher22
Thanks, my setting is 'unmuted' but I get no audible warnings or orange circles on the display.

    • +1

I believe you must have a destination route, don't think it will alert you if you just have it opened.

      • @hasher22
I thought about that but it still doesn't work when I have a destination route. Maybe I'll uninstall and reinstall the app.

        • +1

Maybe, also turn your phone off silent (this shouldn't be the case cause my alerts work in silent mode but I have app volume turned up).

        • +1

Make sure your media volume is turned up and not on mute. You will start receiving voice guidance when you start moving.

    • I find it just gives me a beep noise when there's a camera: duh duh. But no voice message.

No. I'm just trying to avoid fines. 😊

      • I know a foolproof way to not get speeding and red light fines.

        Don't commit the offence

        • It's not a offence to drive through yellow lights.

          • @jv: Cruise control, 200k sports car etc etc…

          • +1

@jv: @jv that depends on the circumstances. If its deemed safe to stop. You can be fined.

            • -3

              @Jake17:

If its deemed safe to stop. You can be fined.

Sometimes the lights change too quick, forcing you to stop dangerously.
I'd only do a dangerous stop if I knew there was a red light camera.
If there was no red light camera, I'd judge whether it was safe to go through the intersection or not.

          • +2

@jv: If you had the ability to safely come to a stop, yes it is actually an offence.

            • -4

              @Sleeqb7:

If you had the ability to safely come to a stop

But when there is a red light camera, people tend to unsafely come to a stop rather than risk a fine.

  • This feature is not avaliable on iphones, you cant report mobile speed cameras or cops.

    • It is why smart traffic police sit just "Up the road" from speed camera sites knowing that idiots will put their foot down after passing the camera site :)

  • +1

Shouldn't speed camera locations be classified as Secret to stop their locations being published? :]

  • The real question is does it tell you whether it is a speed camera or red light camera. That way I know if I need to slow down when going through the red light or stop completely and wait for a green light.

Do you connect your phone to your car display?

    • @John Kimble
      Yes, wired Android Auto.

      • Try not connecting and see if it works. If it does, you know it's your car.

  • +1

I use the 2 things in my head to look for them and I keep to the speed limit

    • +1

      😇

  • Dont trust google maps in regional areas ive had to help a couple people who got themselves into minor trouble. Those same situations in other areas of Australia could have been life threatening.

  • Use Waze if you want live traffic alerts. Waze is now own by Google. Some of Googlemaps alert is fed from Waze.

Tips! You don't have to speed when driving you can always stay below the speed limit and obey the red lights then you won't need to worry about these.
