Origin Energy 25% off Electricity and Gas (NSW Only)

410

I finally made the switch to Origin with this deal. It's the best discount I have ever seen.

It's not only for Gas and not only for Integral Energy customers like the previous Origin offer (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/82469). And the discount is not from inflated rates like TruEnergy's offer (onebigswitch). Even better, this is only 12 month contract so no long commitments.

Before someone saying check the rates not only the discount %, Origin's rates are the same as the regulated tariff rates (at least in NSW).

Enjoy

This is only for NSW customers though. Might be good to put that in the title.

  • So what's the best discount I can get by phoning. I called the other week and asked for 10% of my bill and immediately she said yes. I declined as I want to try to go higher. Any one know what's the best we can get off?

    • Call again on above number and quote the promotion code

I called and no issue at all, try it !!!

  • Yeah I think my current bill is liek 14% off or something? 25% off is heaps! …is there a catch or something here?

    • +4

I find that when comparing to my current provider that they shift the charges from usage to supply charge. The discount only apply to usage charge but not to supply charge. So when i take both usage and supply charge into account, the difference is minimum or even dearer…

      • what is the difference between usage and supply?

        • +1

Usage is what you use. Supply is the service that is supplied.

        • Usage is the amount of power or electricity you use, charged by the amount you use (ie. an amount per kWh for power). Supply is a flat fee that is always charged every day, no matter how much you use.

        • thanks

      • +3

This. Signed up with Origin for a ~ 14% discount on electricity and gas, got my first gas bill, and it's nowhere near 14% off the total. Call them, and they say "oh, the discount only applies on your usage, not your service charge". And (for gas at least) the service charge is 2/3rds of the bill total. So a "14% discount" actually means a 5% discount in bill totals. Which means the difference between energy retailers & the amounts saver are much smaller than it sounds like at first glance. I'm still waiting for my first electricity bill with the discount, but I'm expecting the situation to be similar.

        • So are there any providers that offer a discount on the supply charge or any other discount that is better than Origin's right now?

I tried calculating this a while ago on http://www.myenergyoffers.nsw.gov.au/ and usually Origin was on top with my kWh numbers and average usage.

          Thanks.

edit: I mean when comparing it to only 1 year contracts. I've done the search again and it seems the breakdown is that I save most with Dodo, then Qenergy and then Origin by about $20-50ish. All these are as far as I know discounts on energy usage and not service charges.

        • I was going to say - 25% off on usage only. And you will find that the supply charge usually outweighs the usage charge (unless you are a heavy user).

I signed up a while back with Energy Australia before when they had an 8% discount off your usage and supply. Essentially 8% off your bill. But these days, I think if you shop around you will find better.

        • +1

My electricity usage to supply ratio (in dollars, before discount) is approx 75:25.

My gas usage to supply ratio (in dollars, before discount) is approx 85:15.

I'm with AGL in NSW. There is 3 in my household and according to energymadeeasy.gov.au my electricity usage per my recent bill (in kWh) is below the average seasonal household usage (in kWh) for a 1-person household in my neighbourhood.

According to energymadeeasy.gov.au, the average seasonal household usage over approx 3 months in my neighbourhood is:

          1-person household: 1100kWh
          2-person household: 1400kWh
          4-person household: 1900kWh
          6-person household: 2400kWh

      • Who is your current provider? Mine is AGL and I find it comparable to Origin's rates. So this is very tempting for me. I'm into my 2nd (and last year) of contract with AGL but it may be worth paying $50 for each of electricity and gas to break the contract.

        • +1

Origin and AGL have the same rates and supply charges in NSW.

nickj, I think you need to do your math again. Supply charges are only $0.4873 per day for gas. This rate is the same for Origin and AGL (higher for TRU). So quarterly it's $43.85. To make $43.85 the 2/3rd of your gas bill you have to use extremely little gas.

        • AGL gas rate thresholds are per annum whilst Origin's is per quarter (comparable as it is adjusted to 1/4th). But does AGL take the literal meaning of 'per annum' and not adjust it to 1/4th in the quarterly billing?

        • +1

Found the answer to my own question from AGL website:
The kWh / MJ values in a usage column above are annual consumption thresholds up to which the stated price may apply.Billing period consumption thresholds for the stated price are calculated by dividing the annual threshold by 365 and multiplying by the number of days in the billing period.Unused amount for each billing period consumption threshold are not carried forward.

    • No it's not. Read the offers again.

      • Not a dupe, different links.

  • Is this for Both as a packeage or can i only do electricity?

    • +2

Electricity only gets you 24% discount (without the 1% dual energy discount)

      • What if your already contracted in? :( can i move? D<
        contracted with orgin that is

        • +1

"This offer is only available to new residential accounts in NSW when you choose Origin for your electricity and/or natural gas for the term of your Energy Plan"

But id say worth a try. If you sign a new contract they may be willing to accept to give you the offer.

  • " (c) be a Small Retail Customer during the Energy Plan Period. "

Doesn't mean we need to be a small business does it ?

    • No it doesnt. This is for residential customers only.

  • Does this mean that after 12 months the customer will automatically lose the discount? Or does it work like mobile phone accounts where there is no change to the monthly plan rates except that you can exit the contract without charge at the end of the term?

    • If they dont offer a discount in 12 months then switch to someone who does.

    • +1

When I was with Origin Energy when the contract finished I lost the discount. Origin did not even inform me of this and I only realised when an electricity door to door salesman told me that I was on the normal standard rate. So you need to put it in your diary when the contract finishes so you can sign on to a new contract.

  • awesome! I am just about to move into a new place near end november! does this offer apply too?

  • I have recently signed up 2yrs contract both electricity 16% and gas 14% with Origin… that was only a month ago… not sure if anyone here success in changing to this new offer… I will give them a call tomorrow and see if they can place another 12months contract on top of my existing 2yrs contract…….sigh…

    • Be weary of long term contracts.. with AGL if you terminate it's a $150 ETF fee for both gas & elec on top of reader fees at entry/exit. For the few $ saved on usage each quarter I don't think it's nearly worth it.

      • As per Origin website:

What happens when I switch to Origin?

When we receive your application, your energy agreement with us begins. We notify your current provider on your behalf about your decision to switch to Origin. The switch occurs after your next meter read. This is typically done every three months for electricity and every three months for gas (two months in Victoria). This is to ensure each energy company has a definitive start and end point to your charges. After this date, you will receive a final invoice from your current provider and from then on Origin will issue your invoices. Your distributor doesn't change so your supply will continue as normal. We then notify you in writing once your switch is complete.

        • Origin Website: The DailySaver Energy Plan is for a period of 12 months from the date that energy supply under this Energy Plan starts ("Energy Plan Period").

So if you have to wait until January 2013 (for example) for the official switch to occur from your current provider to your new provider (Origin Energy), the 12 month period starts from January 2013 and not today when you enter into the agreement.

    • Hey Kenneth Let me know how you go eh? I signed for 1 year last quarter for the same discounts as well. Hopefully you can get it and others may have a chance as well :)

      • just called 1300 674 446 and they couldn't do anything as they are an outsourced company. They advised me to call the head office on 132 463.

        • +1

Just called the head office with a 25mins wait time……… I explained my situation but at first they mentioned the offer no longer available (I then told them this offer is still avail on your website and is current)… anyway, they then asked my contract number and the operator is happy to cancel my existing contract and re-raise a new one, no termination exit fee apply as I am still sticking with Origin.

They are expecting to have my meter "read" during December, hence able to transfer me across to the new plan.

I hope the operator gets "commission" by successfully signing me up under their sales ID ;)

        • Oh wow nice job, might have to give it a shot!

    • Edit: just saw my existing contract and it was only 12months term on 16%/14% and not 2yrs as previously mentioned.

  • i just signed up-to AGL.. about 7 days ago.. does anyone know if AGL have 10days cooling off period? i really like to take up this offer..

    • +1

you have 10 biz days to cancel

      • -1

        nice :) cheers mate..

  • i was not happy with their service. So i terminated my contract. they cant even get my address right. They sent the bill to a wrong address then charged me for late fee. I called them to update my address and they said it was fixed. The next bill cycle, it was sent to the same wrong address again. Cant imagine what system they are using. A friend also had a bad customer experience with them.

    • it took them 8 months to send me my first gas bill

  • Sweet deal

  • +1

It is a good deal. I compare different supplyers and move from DoDo (Electrcity) and AGL(Gas) to Origin for 12 month contract with 16% Electrcity and 13% Gas discount. Origin told me I already with them (Electrcity) since 18 Sep but Gas still wait for next meter reading date. Beside those discount they give me $50 + $50 in the first bill for both electrcity and gas. So I think in my case that $100 will cover the 25% discount new offer. They may not give me more discount.

  • I feel peeved off, I signed up to Origin last quarter!! 16% discount on elect :(

  • No deal. The discount isn't off the entire bill.
    There's always a catch with sneaky Origin…

Do your maths and other retailers end up cheaper despite
    A lower % percent discount.

    • Such as?

  • +2

I think it'd be a bit harsh to neg Origin on ethical grounds, but they have been campaigning against Australia's Renewable Energy Target. (http://www.climatespectator.com.au/commentary/origin-fudging…). Given the benefits of renewable energy, I myself would rather support a company that wasn't quite so strongly on the side of pollution.

    • Hmmm, interesting. Thanks for pointing that out. Every deal needs some ethical background in my opinion.

As for this, I haven't read too much of that link but it seems quite a bit concerning. I guess they don't want to pollute inherently but it's just a side effect of them wanting to make more money.

    • This deal offers 10% GreenPower for free. AGL charges $1.10 per week for the same percentage.

How much green power did you take up for your energy plan?

      • read the fine print. the 10% greenpower is only for 12 months and they reserve the right to charge you more.

do you like writing blank cheques? I don't.

        • Isn't this energy plan offer a 12-month deal anyway?

          Origin Energy site:

You will not have to pay any Charges for the GreenPower Green Product which matches the GreenPower percentage specified in the Agreement Schedule as 'Pay No More' (or which has a price of $0/wk) for the Supply Address ('Origin GreenPower Pay No More') (if any). This clause, and the Origin GreenPower Pay No More continues after the end of the Energy Plan (if any). However, after the end of the Energy Plan Period or 12 months from the Acceptance Date (whichever is later), we may vary the Charges or cancel the Origin GreenPower Pay No More (including your GreenPower) by notice to you. This term is part of your Energy Plan with us.

    most providers are sneaky
go for one which gives discount on the total bill
compare with your higher discounts with ohters
be surprised when you annualise the bill
    origin's offer is really:
    21% Electricity guaranteed usage discount,
21% Natural Gas guaranteed usage discount,
plus an additional 2% pay on time usage discount if you pay your bill by the due date
plus an additional 1% dual fuel usage discount for having both your electricity and natural gas accounts with Origin
plus an additional 1% direct debit usage discount.
21+2+1 if you meet a electricity conditions only.

    i went to lumo
who give discounts on the whole bill
    from previous ozB post
    more honest
    less hassle
but they seem to have problems reading my meters correctly.

  • +1

How much discount did you get from Lumo? Appears to be 9% off total bill in NSW urban area.

    • +2

Yeah, I checked up on it at it's 9% of the total bill. Highly doubt that is better than the 24% you get on your usage unless you use VERY little electricity and have the majority of your bill be the supply charge.

    • it varies from time to time as you know
12% then was better than 15% with origin!

  • Note "* Eligibility and availability criteria, minimum periods and terms and conditions apply. This offer is not available in all areas and can be withdrawn at any time prior to a customer entering into an Agreement with Origin which includes this Energy Plan. The DailySaver discount (and any other discounts you are eligible for such as direct debit) apply only to the energy rate component of the Charges and not to the supply/service or green product charges. The pay on time discount does not apply to customers who have an easipay payment plan (other than an EasiPay payment plan with direct debit). " For T&C go to http://www.originenergy.com.au/3279/Energy-product-terms?pro…

  • I am an existing customer for about 5 years and I just could not get them to budge and offer the discount to me. 15% was all they could offer. Any existing customers that aren't in contract get the deal?

  • I got 15% for electricity and 10% for gas…. yay!!!

    • I signed up on the 19th for this deal, i haven't received anything in the mail yet,a bit slow.

      • been a customer for a few months, just called them up, all good!

        • So this deal is not just for those switching to Origin Energy? Existing customers can apply too?

        • Well I tried about 2 times and they refused (am an existing customer for a few years, no contract). Worth a shot though. The best they offered me is what xception mentioned - 15% for electricity and not 24%/25% the new deal offers.

  • I've heard pretty bad things about Origin.

    Also, they get horrible reviews

    • I've come across several complaints on wrong meter reading. I have always thought that meter reading is done by the company that owns the poles & wires (eg. Ausgrid) and not the retail company (eg. AGL or Origin Energy). So if people are complaining about incorrect meter read, are they referring to retail companies not properly obtaining data from the infrastructure company that did the readings?

  • +2

    Account Establishment Fee

An account establishment fee may apply per fuel if you transfer to us from another retailer or if you are signing up to take a fuel for the first time. If you are required to pay such a fee, that obligation and the amount of the fee will be set out in your Agreement Schedule or will be advised to you in writing prior to the time you become liable for the fee.

This is on their submit page. Hmm, kinda worried about this since I'm about to change from AGL.

Did a quick google search. It appears to be for South Australia and not for NSW.

edit: Now I'm not sure. I can see that it is mentioned here, but doesn't state the price.

edit2: I just called up and got some questions answered. For anyone curious, the wait time was about 15 minutes (to their 132461 number which I converted to make the call cheaper!) at about 3:45pm.
Q: What happens to the 10% Green Power free thing after 12 months?
A: This is subject to change any time and you will be notified of it so you will have the option to opt out.
Q: What happens after the 12 month contract?
A: All discounts will expire and you will have the chance to speak with us again to discuss your options.
Q: Is there an account establishment fee?
A: Only if you are moving property but as you are transferring from AGL no. You are transferring your account not really establishing a new one.

Other random things I found out:
    - Seniors cards aren't eligible for concessions (there's a section in the application asking you to put in concession details if you have any)
    - There MAY be a change of ownership fee depending on whether there's a need to do a final reading or whether the charges can be backdated
    - Peak ONLY meters are the most common (and from my brief research looks like it's actually better than having peak/offpeak meters since their peak rates are pretty high..)
    - Hot water is cheaper to run off gas than electricity, according to the Origin customer representative that I spoke to
    - Nothing wrong with transferring from another company even if it is not under your name, as long as the person whose name is with the provider you're transferring FROM will be on the Origin account as a joint account holder

Hope this helps clear up other queries people may have! I'm wondering whether I would change back to AGL after a year if the discounts are being removed…

    • +1

I worked out that roughly, for time of use meters, peak rate is double that if shoulder rate which in turn is double that of off peak rate. If you are a busy working professional (for example) who doesn't always go home on time at 530pm, then you possibly don't need to worry too much about the high peak rate (2pm-8pm Mon-Fri excl public holidays).

There are always ways to minimise cost. For example, utilise the washing machine timer to run overnight (off peak) such that it finishes when you wake up in the morning. Or invest in duck/goose down feather quilt for winter instead of running the electric blanket/heater. People say that it costs only $1/day to run the heater. But that equates to $90/quarter (billing period) for each heater.

  • If you are unable to get the 21+2+1% offer from Origin, you should be able to get the $175 rebate after six months + 10+4% discount. If Origin won't give it to you directly, iSelect will. PM if you want a direct phone number.

    • That wouldn't apply to current customers would it?

      • I just got off their customer support and he has confirmed that they are doing the (up to) 25% discount (on usage) only on the fuel(s) that you bring over to Origin from another provider. So, if you are NOT an Origin customer, then you'll get 25% off both, else you get 25% off only the one you switch. If both your fuels are currently with Origin, then tough luck :(

  • I had re-contracted last week for a 10% discount (+2% on time, -1% CC direct debit). I just called up Origin on 13 24 61 and was told it was only for people switching from other suppliers.

  • So what's the best deal in QLD right now?

  • so anyone worked out if this is good deal or not?
    and by how much?

    • Circumstances differ. Best is to have a look at your latest bill and apply the pre-discount charge with the 25% discount and compare.

  • I was already signed up with Origin and I signed up and I was still entitled to this offer. Everything confirmed in writing. I even put my current account number down.

  • Got the 'To The Household' promotional flyer in my letterbox yesterday. Looks like Origin Energy is really going hard on this offer.

  • I got my contract/agreement but can't find my account number on it. Does anyone know if I need to wait for another correspondence which has my account number before I can register for online access? The switch from my current provider to Origin Energy is expected to occur only next month or the month after when the next meter reading will be taken by AusGrid.

  • Can't believe this I signed up with Origin yesterday and only got an 11% discount!!!

    • Because you didn't ask? Call them back during your cooling off period and get the discount!

  • This deal should be marked as unexpired it is extended until the 15th! I just got an email back from Origin and even though I signed up for another contract (see above) they are putting me on this one instead :)

  • Anyone have feedback from the switch?
    c

  • Just completed application ans Switched over.
    Thanks OP!

Called AGL to cancel and they said $75 early cancellation fee (was some some stupid contract) each for electricity and Gas.

Asked to speak with supervisor - Threatened with Ombudsman - All charges will be waived :)

    • How did you argue your way out when it is clearly in your agreement that there will be early termination fee?

      • Didnt budge whilst speaking with sales.
        Got transferred to resolution.
        Threatned with Ombudsman.

What i dont get is, i was with AGL for 2 years now and they tell me i amn another 10% off contract.
        Told them to shove it!

        • Oh that's probably it then. You've served your 2 year contract period, so there's no termination fee applicable. I think it's more a case of them incorrectly charging you rather than you getting a fee waiver on a legitimate charge.

        • well they told me i re-contracted on a new plan start of this year and wanted the $75 off me. such BS
