New Car Is Ready - Bank Transfer? Cheque?

Dealer advised new car is ready. No finance required. What is the normal process when it comes to payment?

If it's bank transfer, it can take a few days to clear. It means I'm paying for a car I haven't seen yet which is a bit risky.

Should I do the old fashion way by getting a cheque so I can check the car before paying and drive away in the same day?

(I bank with macquarie, bankwest and westpac)

And at which point do I get to pick the rego.

I'd go Bank Cheque. Make sure the car is ready for delivery before it is handed over. No car (for whatever reason) = hold onto the cheque.

    • +9

Bank Cheque definitely ON the day.
KIA pushed a friend of mine to pay early for next day pick up, car wasn't ready for another MONTH. LOL

    • This is the correct way.

did that scare shit out Toyota local dove me best car to bank to deport it keep tell this now how pay for cars in 2024 I scare them.

  • +12

It's new, it's fine. Transfer the money if you can wait a few days, or get a bank cheque if you want it sooner

A lot of the time you don't get to pick the rego, though have you informed the dealer that you want to do that?

  • +3

Had to do a bank transfer of full amount prior to picking up. It's fine if it's a new car from a dealership

  • +8

if you want to be annoying to the dealer, inspect the car, do the bank transfer, come back a few days later again.

    • +30

And inspect the car again thoroughly before pick-up. Just to annoy the salesman a bit more. I am sure he/she annoys at least 7 customers everyday.

      • +6

Make sure you make claims about this being "not the same car" you inspected some days ago. Make sure you raise that you know this is a conspiracy and if they don't own up and tell the truth you are going to want a full refund and you are going to buy a Tesla.

    • +2

whilst we do dislike salespeople generally (and I 100% get why) there are a lot of back-office people working at dealerships whose job/bonus is reliant on a steady flow of cars out the doors.
My mate worked at Big T before and they we're charged $56 a day per car on the yard (which included car's sold and not delivered). This was a big irk to management, so he (completely unrelated to sales) had to chase customer's holding up the process for a myriad of preventable reasons and was judged accordingly (clearly not fair but it is what it is).

      • -2

Some people might call sales persons parasites.

They are an unnecessary tax on the cost of the car. THey add no value, theres nothing ground breaking in their opinions or showmanship ?

We dont need salespersons to help us buy a watermelon, or a coke or a car.

        • -2

          Obviously never worked in sales.

          • -2

@mousie: Obviously never worked, period. Doesn't understand offices, cars, takeaway coffee, salespeople, managers.. all of those everyday life things that the self-sufficient manage.

              @CrowReally: @Crow:

              Doesn't understand offices,

              cow:

You cant even write a c omplete sentence. Doesnt understand offices ? Doesnt understand what pricisely ?

Your office space is not your friend. The vast majority will never come to your house to help you with anything. Travelling to and from any office is a tax, they steal your time in commuting and pay you nothing. Thats a fact.

              crow:

              cars, takeaway coffee,

              cow:
              Losers drink coffee.

Losers in offices drink coffee pretending to work, and then on the weekend they do exactly the same thing just sit in a cafe drinking coffee. Losers all the way.

              crow:

salespeople, managers.. all of those everyday life things that the self-sufficient manage.

              cow:
              Why would i respect a salesperson ?

Most a blooody liars, They will say anything to make a sale, they are not your friend. They are nothing but a tax on everyone else.

              • -1

                @CowFrogHorse:

You cant even write a c omplete sentence. Doesnt understand offices ? Doesnt understand what pricisely ?

One error-filled sentence (incorrect spacing, punctuation) having a shot at my writing, followed up by two more dud sentences (more missing punctuation and shit-tier spelling).

Your incompetence is a gift that keeps on giving, my non-friend.

Of all the things you could zero in on me for and it's something you couldn't do if someone held a gun to your head.

Just sad, really. Even more baffling is why you think someone would battle their way through your tortured syntax to come across scintillating ideas like "losers drink coffee". Is that your expert opinion, obviously being one of life's winners yourself?

Bad ideas, poorly expressed. Like usual.

                • -1

                  @CrowReally: Wow.

How many months have you been sitting at your computer waiting for me to write something ?

I write something and you reply within minutes.

Wasting time is not a new experience for you is it ?

After sitting in traffic/trains/commuting for 15-20 hours a week for half your life its hardly a shock, you would sit at home for 3 months 24/7 waiting to reply with minutes of a new comment from me.

@CowFrogHorse: "I might not always have the time in my day to point out the actions of an incompetent fcukup, but life is about making time to point them out" - the Dalai Lama

          • -2

@mousie: because you say so ?

You do realise theres a base price from the car manuf, then the sales person adds their cut.

Theres nothing stopping car manuf selling direct and out the middleman. Problem solved.

Yalls not going to take one of the only opportunities in life to rock up in a black suit and tie and sun glasses with a briefcase of pineapples handcuffed to your wrist?

    • +24

Briefcase, what is OP buying, a Maserati?

I paid out a car loan with cash once, $16k. It fit in an envelope and I took it from one bank to another trying to look cool but actually sweating rivers.

      • +16

Because you didn't request $16k in unmarked $5 bills.

        • I prefer to go to those coin collector shops and fill up on $1 bills.

        • +1

          and no funny business

          • +1

            @blitz: Intended D.B. Cooper?

            • @Ricktheroller: My theory is that it was an inside job and DB Cooper himself didn't really exist. I think an air steward in disguise checked in as him. Once all the passengers had deplaned, the air crew hid the money and told everyone he bailed out.

      • -3

$16k in $100 bills stacked perfectly is 22.5cm tall. I'm guessing it was a big envelope?

        • +6

          it's 22.5mm tall, unless there's some thicc notes I don't know about.

        • +1

Maybe if you stacked them end-to-end lol.

        • He put it inside his novelty cheque envelope which he was also using that day to buy a house.

      • I walked out from the casino last month with 15k in hundred dollar notes.

Felt like a baller to get 2x 5k in paper bands and exceed my deposit limit

    • +8

When my parents sold their first house in the early 70's the buyer paid with two plastic shopping bags of cash. Annoyed my dad because he and my mum had to count it all before then taking it to the bank in the morning.

      • +11

        Damn
Didn’t even have the decency to spring for hessian bag with green dollar sign on them like the cartoons? Jeez

      • +1

        That was me sorry

    • would love to see him/her roll up in a baseball cap and jersey and demand to see Ashley Shaffer….

  • +8

They let me use credit card for several thousand, for the points. Rest was bank transfer.

    • +4

      There’s surcharge for credit card

      • +2

Even for the deposit? I was able to pay a few thousand on the credit card with the rest being on bank cheque

        • mastercard/visa surcharge 1.75%

      • How much?

        • mastercard/visa surcharge 1.75%

      • +3

        Never for the deposit.

    • +4

They let me max out my deposit via card to a level their financial controller wouldn't query (surcharge-free); for the balance they surcharged my card at cost, not the usual rounded-up amount the retail sector gets away with. Guess this depends on the dealer/merchant and whether you desire the points.

      • Probably also depends on your negotiating skills. You could negotiate this up front and it will come off their margin for the deal.

        • Margin was so low I agreed to donate a slab when I collected the car. It was a VW so I vaguely recall getting something Bavarian.

    • yep same here. I think it was $5K for me fee free on the credit card.

    • Oh man great tip! I asked this question coz I saw your comment and they allowed $4k fee-free on the day, thanks for the heads up.

    • -2

      Thats genius.

You do realise paying for a car via credit card costs them a few percentage points, which of course means they need to raise the price to get the money back.

      • Yes, all part of the trade in haggle. Close to month end or quarter end when they are trying to meet their sales quota, they are usually a bit more generous we find.

  • +10

I did mine via bank cheque as I was too paranoid of falling for those scams where you end up transferring to the wrong account because the e-mail got intercepted.

As for rego, I told my dealer when they called to confirm delivery of the car what I preferred for my rego (no 4s or 7s). They said they’ll try but it wasn’t guaranteed

      • +9

Yep. The $10 bank cheque fee was a small price to pay for peace of mind

        • My credit union waived my bank cheque fee so that was free peace of mind

      • +1

        Like this ?

Do you know of the outcome in this case? I can't locate anything that says they lost it all or received it back.
Can't find any record of the court case being finalised and would be interested to see the judges reasoning.

        • One way around that is to go to the dealer and collect the bank details in person from the finance person.

Dealers i have used recently provided us with a sheet of paper with their banking details

    • -3

Shop at Gerry's: Bring in your own army to even get remotely what you pay for, let alone the non existing warranty!

    • This is the way.

    • Is no 4s and 7s a superstitious thing or is there a practical reason? Hard to read or something?

      • +1

4 sounds like death in Mandarin. My mum was the one who told me no 7s (especially next to four): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraphobia

Luckily for me, my dealer complied with my preferences and gave me a number plate that has no 4s and no 7s (no 8s either but that didn't help much on my old car so I wasn't bothered about that)

        • That's good. I wonder how wide of a selection the dealer has

    • Sames. We EFTPOS'd 15k in person (on CC for the points) and bank-chequed the rest. They waived the surcharge, which was nice :)

  • I did bank cheque for when I paid for my car.

  • +12

If you pay by transfer what happens if theres a scratch inside the glovebox?

    • +8

Worse still, unidentified lip balm in the centre console!

  • +1

When I picked up my new vehicle Dealer was happy to take a bank cheque on pickup

    • -4

I used a bank cheque and handed it over after inspecting it.

I didn't care if they were happy or not about it. It's legal tender so they can cry in their bonus

      • +2

Why wouldn't they be happy with a bank cheque?

But while bank cheque are a commonly accepted method of payment, they aren't legal tender- only cash is.

        • Sounds like a fake story. A new car dealership won't even confirm handover appointment until payment has cleared or they agree to Bank Cheque on the day in advance.

If they were expecting online transfer then the car will still be on the backlot awaiting pre-delivery service when you walk in without appointment.

          • @joelmuzz: Of course I had an appointment, I am not just rocking up out of the blue. The car dealer rings me and says hey your car is here and I am like cool, how do you want me to pay? Dealer is like EFT or bank cheque my dude. I am like nice, I will bring a bank cheque in in Friday and the sales man goes, cool brother see you then. Friday rolls past I roll up with my bank cheque and I roll out I my new car. Everyone is happy. Except for the dude you cant imagine anyone being happy. True story friend

      • +2

A business has the right to dictate how they want to be paid. It is perfectly legal to say no to a bank cheque much like it is legal for shops not to accept paper cash and be card only

        • I thought any business needed to offer a method of payment that did not force you to pay more than the ticketed or agreed sale price.

          • @Eeples: Yes that is true. But in this example they can say no to a bank cheque as you can pay by bank transfer for no extra cost. And for cafes that are card only usually there are no fees if you pay by eftpos or they don’t charge a fee and just build the fee into the prices

    • I bet they don't get propositioned like that every day.

      • He did seem a little taken aback now that you mention it

  • -1

    Bank transfer for me.

  • -6

    Bank Transfer? Cheque?

    Venmo

    • Unfortunately it's not available in Australia

      • +2

But I saw it on Youtube ???

      • +1

Unfortunately? It's a step backwards compared to PayID.

  • -3

If it's bank transfer, it can take a few days to clear.

With some banks, it is now instant.

    • +4

Only instant depending how the banks set it up being 'instant'.

I know CBA holds funds most of the time for 24h before releasing to money to new accounts.

Some banks have a 1k or 2k limit then a warning comes on to say it will process within a few days, ING does this.

    • +1

Ubank is the fastest if set up properly.

  • I would do bank cheque cause I'm paranoid little biach that refuses to enter bsb and account number for really large amounts if I got one number wrong even though I checked it 10000 times. But I will do payID lol.

  • +3

They won't release the car until the funds have hit their account. When we bought last year i just paid the bank $10 to make a bank cheque. Less hassle and stress.

    • -3

So you gave them a piece of paper that they then had to tale to the bank and wait for funds to clear and got thee car before they had funds in their account?

      • +2

Bank cheques printed and signed at the branch is the equivalent of using cash as far as the dealerships are concerned. I’m not carrying around 40k in cash.

        • -2

But the funds wont "hit their account" at time of pickup will they?

If you'd said a bank cheque is as good as cash the pedant would not have had an open window

          • +2

@Euphemistic: A bank cheque is as good as cash as long as it's addressed the right person

          • @Euphemistic: When I bought my car years ago, I handed the bankcheque over and drove the car. Dealer said bank cheque is as good as cash

          • +2

@Euphemistic: It seems like you might not be aware that a bank cheque is different to a normal cheque. A bank cheque is produced at a branch and the funds are held and guaranteed by the bank. There is a reason they are used for large sums of money (house deposits etc).

            • -1

              @johnno07: Sigh.

              • @Euphemistic: So you weren't aware then?

                • @johnno07:

They won't release the car until the funds have hit their account.

This word for word statment cannot be true 100% of the time. If you give them cash it does not magically appear in their account before the car is released, same for a bank cheque. Theyve got the payment , its just not in their account yet.

Its not like they take the cheque and you have to wait for them to go to the bank and have the funds IN THR ACCOUNT before the car is released. You can purchase a car with a bank cheque when the bank is closed. Or if you were that way inclined, could present a fraudulent cheque and take the car.

      • They are a business. 3 days, 5 days…. They might not even deposit the bank cheque until the end of the month.

Do you think new car dealers buy their stock upfront ?

  • +6
    • +1

It took one day in the post. Kudos to Ing

  • +1

When I got my wife's car, they wanted Bank Transfer and had moved away from Bank Cheques during COVID.

It was instant as we were with the same bank, that helped. OSKO is usually instant, depends on banks though.

  • +1

I bought my brand new car 5 years ago on EFTPOS. Instant transfer. No fees, no queries. Just make sure you have the money you need in the right account and swipe, you're done. Good luck.

    • +6

And don't forget to increase your payment limit on your card before doing so.
