    Here for the creative jokes

I don't think this is made by Creative.

        No Schiit Sherlock

        • +1

          No Schiit because Asgard

  • Haven't been dabbling into the whole amp/dac snake oil business in a while but whatever happened to the 02 dac? It was a budget oriented device that was touted to be one of the flattest around.

Was it just flavour of the month back then? Surely if it was that good back then it would still hold up now considering how slow audio tech moves.

    • Depends what you're looking for. If you're looking for something enough to drive a set of headphone and nothing else, then you can buy the bare minimum and live with that.

Everything else have their diminishing returns.

    • The O2/ODAC was groundbreaking at the time but IIRC the designer wouldn't allow the main company who produced it (JDS Labs) to make any changes to it. And since even in audio technology improves they just created their own version that made it obsolete e.g. JDS Labs made the OL and now the EL & Atom and Schiit, Topping etc came out with plenty of great alternatives.

The O2/ODAC is totally fine if you have it or find it second hand but there's been plenty better options for many years now.

      • O2/ODAC is totally fine if you have it .. plenty better options …

Have the combo - brilliant. Not in any hurry to waste money on “better options”.

    $50 shipping to Sydney Metro.

    • That stinks

      That's schiit!

    • French Connection UK that Schiit

I am no audiophile, so I will leave that stuff up to the experts, but I have a DAC and Amp from them and absolutely love the sound they produce, more than enough power to get the full range on the HD599s and the build quality is fantastic. They feel solid and give me confidence that they are a life time purchase for me.

    • Yep, have had Magni original and also Asgard, nicely built, good solid products, also good customer service.

  • no USB-in?

    • +2

      USB-in? They're not DACs, they're headphone amps.

      • ah fair enough…

  • Is this a genuine Schiit ???

  • I had a schitt magni & modi stack I got from the US 3 years ago, last year one of them stopped working, ymmv

Also as it was from the states no warranty, I was schiit out of luck

  • +1

    This is a Schiit deal!

  • Bought in 2021 - paid $99 USD each for a Modi+ and Magni+, great sound quality - definitely a big upgrade compared to normal PC output and all the high end sound cards on the market (wanted something that could drive headphones properly), had outstanding reviews for it's price point.

Shipping wasn't great though paid $105US for Fed-Ex priority

  • +3

Shipping costs utterly kill the deal. Longevity of their products has been questionable for a long time.

    • +1

Yeah, my magni modi only lasted a few years before it started having problems. The usb port doesn't work properly if it's cold. It gets power but data transfer doesn't work for a good 30 mins until it heats up enough. Apparently it's a common issue. Ridiculous.

Edit: modi, not magni. The magni still works fine

      • I have an Asgaard and Modius stack and I just leave them both turned on 24/7. Maybe try that.

    • My Modi and Vali haven't skipped a beat in my 5 years of ownership.

    Cue the schiity puns.

The joke is the Schiity delivery & brokerage fees which you conveniently omitted, so in response here is a neg vote.

  • These make your headphones sound like…

  • Been running Modi and Magni with my HD 6XX for the last 4 years. The stack has been on and operating the whole time last 3+ years and no issue yet.

stay away from this kind of expensive hobby guys. honestly these types of things are a bunch of cope for people with money. like everyone on r/headphones a few months later you will be thinking of buying $500 to $1000 headphone products.

I went to r/headphones.com and saw a post recently, dude had a $1k+ amp hooked up to $1k+ headphones and something in the amp went bang and amp damaged the headphones. you arent getting anything better quality from spending thousands of dollars maybe a 1% perceived sound improvement which isnt even proven to be there but speak up about it and you will get punched down by "long term members" and mods will remove your post quickly. bunch of cope.

    • +1

Not necessarily, yes if you participate on any enthusiast gear subreddit you'll FOMO yourself into never ending upgrades, but if you just use the subreddits to find a good bang for buck entry point with good brands, buy them and forget about the subreddits, you'll find yourself with good products that last you a long time and don't break the bank. I got somewhat into audiophile research for awhile, bought Sennheiser HD599 headphones for $200, and JDS labs atom amp/DAC second hand for $150, plus some portable chifi gear for $100, and am happy with them, they have lasted me years and I have no plans to upgrade unless I win lotto or something.

"yes if you participate on any enthusiast gear subreddit you'll FOMO yourself into never ending upgrades,"

yeah I agree any hyper "endgame" focused hobby is a bunch of cope. I can't find the recent post on r/headphones I am referring to about in my comment above (maybe mods already deleted it. but I remember the post had $1k and the words pop, bang and smoke), but look here I found a bunch of posts towards the top of the results for "smoke".

After my Schitt MAGNI literally went up in smoke, https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/mnvei0/after_my…

My Schitt Magni 3+ just went up in smoke - literally. https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/mbv4vi/my_schit…

My Schiit MAGNI 3+ is a piece of shit https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/tvdfnu/my_schii…

all of them just so happened to be schiitt branded I didn't plan this lol.

but here's another post about damaging headphones but referring to Topping L30 https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/knnurb/my_toppi…
also remember multiple posts back then about the $1k A90 which had the exact same problem.

so yeah when I found r/headphones a year ago and was researching I just found so many posts such as this. thought it was only topping because they are cheaper entry level products, but no this kind of huge problem was with expensive brand products too. I remember a lot of these $1k+ failures were tube amps which are "endgame level".

researched further until I got to ASR recommending these topping products and posts in other forums where users were sharing feedback about their expensive $1k+ failures with titles such as "my experience with _____", then long term users who claimed to "know the owners" responded in an unhinged way and ranted about how hard the owner was doing business wise and that such posts were damaging the hobby etc basically "it's better to stay silent". called it quits after that lol lucky I didn't fall for all the propaganda. look up schiitt reviews on youtube and nearly every video shills the products saying "best in class, I recommend it" or whatever. bunch of cope as I said.

    • The high end of audio gear is truly a bunch of wank - but Schiit's entry level gear isn't really very expensive and provides good value for money IMO.

  • lol snake oil, my titanium hd from 10 years ago dunks on this

    • +1

Hardly snake oil. It's a decent headphone amp. Also it has a physical gain knob which is pretty handy. Also a decade old second-hand Titanium HD costs about $200 - so this is literally cheaper.

  • I have a Schiit IEMagni running with a Sound Blasterx g6 and a set of Fostex T50RP's at home and a Schiit Magni2 with a set Fostex T50RP's (I bought 2 sets at $78 each) at work and they have been running awesomely. T50RP's have had ear pads swapped to Shure HPAEC1540 ear pads. Was lucky enough to find mine all locally (and quite cheaply) at the time.
Still running fine after years of constant use.
