My Freda loves this she won't eat crappy grain filled Purina Friskies Whiskas Royal Canin etc et al …. Time to stock up up again Just remeber a year or 2 ago this was the regular price, not sale price Sale prices was $12 for 2.5kg

    • +1

I think it might have even been $8 on special but not seen it this low for a long time now!

  • "Grain free" generally just means they use legumes and/or starchy vegetables instead: equally carbohydrate-dense, which is biologically inappropriate for cats (and dogs).

Cats should get most of their water intake from food. If your cat doesn't drink enough water when eating dry food it can cause various forms of kidney disease over time.

Dry food can be an effective treat or convenience option for your pets, but should never be a staple part of their diet. Just like for humans, heavily processed foods are linked to diabetes, arthritis, cancer and many other degenerative diseases.

    • +1

Yes thats true but most like it in addition, this is one of the better supermarket brands.

    • Would you treat all dry food equally in that case and buy on the basis of cost or look at other measure such as crude protein, fat and fibre?

      • Most food-educated vets say that the most important thing to look for is that the primary ingredient (first listed) is meat - preferably actual meat, rather than "meat meal", which is a fancy way of saying "ground-up bone carcasses".

However, the reality is that there are no regulations or standards for pet foods in Australia, so the manufacturer can write whatever they like on the packaging with the comfort of knowing that it will never be investigated or challenged.

Something else to look for is shelf life. Longer shelf life means the food is more processed, so a dry food with a standard 6 month shelf life is probably less processed (and thus more nutritious) than a food that has a 12 or 18 month shelf life. Bagged dry foods with some moisture left in (the more soft, chewy stuff) are probably a better choice as well.

        • Other things to keep in mind are. Many of the expensive brands like Royal Canin recommended by vets don't have a very good track record. I have tried various brands with various cats over the years including some of the very expensive ones widely recomended including some of the best and The Cats just don't eat it! This one I know friends cats love, and its been good for years. Its not all they are fed but they always eat it unlike other foods. They won't touch this brand of wet food though..

Better veg n legumes than toxic gmo grain

      • processed food was literally designed for you to eat. organic is just some crap they found on the ground somewhere.

        • -1

Everythink is organic is it is or was alive Örganic"is a marketing ploy for the climate activists who think CO2 is toxic Meanwhile as we go CO2 Zero rthat means no living organisms including humans, no plant photosynthesis and an Ice Age

@glyptothek: drink 1 glass of water you're hydrated drink 10,00,000 glasses of water you die… really makes yuo think

            • @Gdsamp: Whateva

            • +1

@Gdsamp: Actually, drink like 20 glasses within an hour and you're dead. 😅

But I'm sure there's some special people on here that could drown in a small puddle.. 😅

              • +1

@WasBargain: At least 2 or 3 have died from sodium imbalance due to overhydration on the Kokoda Track. Took quite a while before doctors twigged that what guides 'diagnosed' as dehydration was in fact the complete opposite.

                • @Igaf: Hyponatremia can be a silent killer!

But yeah, on the rare case, your brain will swell with deadly consequence. 😵

            • +1

@Gdsamp: Doubt it will make him think but hope springs eternal.

          • @glyptothek: Climate activists don't think that at all Tony. After all, everyone knows CO2 is a "colourless, odourless, weightless[sic] gas".
No-one is going "CO2 Zero" either. Get that from your Telegram feed did you?

Thanks OP. Bought the fish variety on special at BigW for about $5 more a few weeks ago. Prices are outrageous but…..

Just a heads up for other owners. Cat which has adopted us (isn't overly fussy but hates anything with kangaroo, inc fresh meat) absolutely LOVES the Aldi Silvester canned wet food - Casserole with chicken, sardine and salmon esp. Purple tin. Apparently the gravy hits the spot. Meets standards.

    • Thx Will try this for my Freda, who adopted us when she was a timid lost kitten, likely dumped. She has similar tastes!

      • +1

This bloke is older but isn't feral. Almost certainly just left behind or dumped and has fended for himself, although I know neighbours were giving him dry food. Has very good manners considering. In the first week he brought/left us two dead rats, 1 mouse dead but intact, and the entrails of another. He's a night hunter. Now lives in a rather nice condo I built outside our back door - when he feels like it.

    • That would have been a bargain if the 2.5kg. Its currently $29 in Big W!

      • Yes it was 2,5kg. Makes this price even better obviously. Still probably need Fussy Cat crunchers for their teeth and gums, as a treat.

        • +1

They are on special too in Coles.
