[QLD] 5 Meals for $50 Pack + $19 Delivery ($0 C&C/ $200 Order) @ Super Butcher

730

Picked one of these up today and I'm happy with the value in the pack. What I received for $50 was - 6x porterhouse steaks (2 packs w/ 3 each, seem better quality than the Aldi porterhouse but yet to try, definitely larger with less fat), 5 chicken kievs (seem huge), 8 chicken burger patties (decent seasoning on them and decent sized. Cooked well in deep fryer), 800g of beef and pork mince. This ends up being 23 items for $50 so ~$2.20 for each serving of meat (if you decide to use the mince in 200g servings). If you bought one of these packs and headed to one of the cheap fruit and veg markets in QLD bobs ya uncle you'd be sure to save some coin without sacrificing taste or quality.

The products usually vary but currently they are offering the following: (you can mix and match what 5 items you want)

  • Crumbed Wagyu Schnitzels (600g) (none left in fridge at Mermaid Beach location).
  • Honey Beef Sausages (800g/14pcs)
  • Pork & Beef Mince (800g)
  • Chicken Kievs (5pc)
  • Chicken Burgers (800g)
  • Porterhouse Steaks (400g)

They also have 10% off on first order online if you sign up to newsletter

    Isn’t this their regular deal?

    • +3

Might be long running not sure had only just come across it myself

    • Yes, they used to offer beef burgers instead of chicken burgers.

      • Last week or the week before they were offering Wagyu beef bacon in the pack and pork loin steaks, some other different items too so it must change often

  • +6

Oh man, I want this in VIC

    • Aldi will be your friend for cheap steaks and cheap honey soy chicken wings if they offer the same prices, it's $6.49 1kg for the wings ATM but got some on clearance an hour before closing the other night for $4. Porterhouse steaks usually cost ~$13 for 4 and you get around a kilo by memory although quite thing and there's a bit of fat although that's what might save them they still come out nice and tender so if you season and cook them well they're nkt bad. If you get frozen chips as well their offerings are usually $1 cheaper than Cole's or Woolies offerings but also taste way better especially in the deep fryer.

You're not getting 1kg of porterhouse for $13. It's closer to $30/kg when on sale. Good marbling translates to a tender steak when cooked properly.

From my experience, Aldi probably has the worst steaks… You can fix this somewhat by using a meat tenderizer (eg a jaccard), or meat tenderizer powder.

        • My bad your's right would have been on clearance but Aldi's steaks are pretty shit I just used good sauce but not a great steak experience and probably not good value overall.

The steaks I saw at Super Butcher all seemed to have no marbling so will tenderize some before hand and try some without tenderizing and see how they go.

@lookingforadeal7: Aldi steaks are shit. Super Butcher regularly sells grass fed organic rump cap for $22-27/kg. Absolutely superb stuff, butchered & cryovacced to your spec.

            • +1

@The Judge: Nice will have to give it a go, hopefully these steaks are good will give them a go tomorrow night

            • @The Judge: Drovers steaks at aldi are the best i’ve had in years and consistently perfect , the rest are garbage

    • Look at Tasman Meats.
Pretty sure they do similar bulk packs.
Not sure of pricing but some of their in-store specials (like crumbed Schnitzels for $11.99 a kg pack) are pretty good.

      • I loved visiting Tasman for game meats but I stopped after I felt the quality dropped.
A while ago now, I should revisit.

Super Butcher went downhill after it was sold

But of course anything is better than the small coolroom with trestle tables it used to be aha

    • Never really tried them so will give them a fair go, wasn't expecting much from the pack honestly but so far seems like it'll turn out to be good value. Value seems similar to some of the packs they listed on their Facebook in 2021. Have you gotten any of the packs recently?

      • I live in VIC now, but my parents are in QLD and they buy a lot of whole cuts like dry aged Angus ribeye and short ribs

The quality grade whole cuts are decent, but of course pricey (still better priced than most butchers)
My comment about going downhill is based on what the business used to be before Andrew sold it - it’s also why he stepped away after the sale because he saw what they wanted to do and didn’t believe in it

        • Nice probably too pricey for me unless they have a good deal on them, some of their specials on their more premium cuts seem good will have to try them out sometime. I'm used to Aldi's porterhouse steaks so I'm sure this will be a step up for me, hopefully these packs last a while I'll probably be using these deals for my meat if the rest of this pack goes good.

@lookingforadeal7: They used to do sales like “buy 3 eye fillets, get 2 free”, the free ones being the smaller of the 5
The sale would start at 4am and they’d sell out of the great stuff by 7am
I went in at 4am once, got to the checkout at 4:30, the poor young girl was so tired she scanned the first 2 Japanese export fillets (on sale for about $50/kg in 2009) and put the other 3 in the bag - they were also the 2 cheapest of the ones I’d grabbed aha

            • @linkindan: That's good I'll have to keep an eye out see if they do anything similar, they have $2.99 kg wings atm which doesn't seem too bad. Their specials pricing is basically offering a competitive pricing to Cole's and Woolworths but with better quality which is okay but it could be better. It's enough to make me switch unless I find a better option.

That's a bargain, I had a similar experience recently at Aldi but it was just for 3 banana breads and I realized on the receipt she only scanned one and we only had one separate item she must have been super tired, there was no special on the banana bread and I wasn't paying attention so didn't notice until I got in the car.

              • @lookingforadeal7: $3/kg for chicken wings is alright, about $4 at supermarkets
I just buy whole chickens, break them down, prep/marinate as I need and freeze a bunch of it. I can get about 6 meals and a litre of stock out of one chicken

For sure keep an eye on their Facebook page, they often have some good prices on dry aged meat - ask to keep the trimmings, they make great beef stock and are useful to make a trivet for roasts

                • @linkindan: That would make it a lot cheaper, saw they have $9.99 for 2kg bags of chicken tenderloins which seems decent too. Unfortunately I don't really have access to a proper oven or stove so I cant cook anything too fancy but these packs seem to account for that and can make some quick and easy meals out of what's there. Might have to do a Curtis Stone style YouTube series cooking a meal for a family of 4 for under $10 QLD edition.

                  • +1

@lookingforadeal7: Get a pressure cooker - you can make pulled pork in under an hour, rich chicken stock in under 3 hours (without an oven for roasting bones - just chop them up and sauté them in a pan), pulled sticky drumsticks in less than 30 minutes, plus many models can slow cook, do yogurt, rice (or just use a stove) etc

Trust me, as a chef with limited equipment at home, you can make lots of great food with minimal equipment

                    • @linkindan: Nice I'll definitely invest in one, any budget friendly brands you'd recommend? Currently I just use two air fryer, a deep fryer, sandwhich maker and an electric stove. We have access to an Oven sometimes but it's really old and will definitely heat up more than it should sometimes and burn what's in there if I don't keep an eye on it. Usually get by without the oven and have only just started cooking often myself and have little space to work with so it's a challenge sometimes but make it work.

                      • @lookingforadeal7: I just have an Aldi one, $60, but it has the features of most $100 units

Can you get a countertop oven? I have a countertop steam oven, but I bake breads, so that’s why I need the steam. A good countertop oven is less than $200 - sometimes less than $100

                        • @linkindan: Probably not just because of space but I do need an electric stove replacement, we had one installed but it's shit itself they seem cheap enough and not too hard to install but never done it myself and worried if there's a problem with the mains the new one will just bust so a countertop oven with the stovetop might be an option, used to have one in a share house and it wasn't great though so might invest some money in a good one over having a pressure cooker.

                          • @lookingforadeal7: $50-60 should get you a good cheap induction cooktop, just make sure your cookware is compatible first or else you’ll have to replace that too

About $80-90 can get you a dual element induction cooker

                            • @linkindan: I don't really have much cookware so I'll have to buy some anyway will definitely do some research beforehand.

Yeah that's what's installed already but it died, probably because it's right next to the sink and the build quality in general of the granny flat I live in is questionable. Might just avoid getting any new appliances and might just invest in a BBQ that does a bit of everything and cook any big meals outside with it.

  • got the worst Wagyu brisket ive ever seen delivered by these guys. sausages and a few different pork items were great though.

    • Yeah I'm hoping the rest of what I got is good, the chicken burgers were surprisingly good was expecting them to be bland but tasted good especially out the deep fryer. Will probably leave reviews for other items here if the selection isn't already gone by the time I eat the rest.

  • +1

but if your in brisbane please just go to moeys butcher. best butcher ive ever been too. his specials prices are insane aswell

    • the one with lorem ipsum all over their website?

      • It's how you know they're authentic.

  • smells like the Sutton Forest meat made a comeback…

  • -6

Once you portion your meat correctly and stop eating like a pig, you can still get really good value out of deals like this.

    • Me and my girlfriend will end up cutting the steaks up and making wraps up and with some cheap veggies so will be 12 servings in total from the steaks alone. Had the chicken burgers for lunch and it surprisingly filled us up even though they don't seem like much.

  • They also have chicken wings for $2.99 a kg which seems pretty good but not sure I never buy chicken wings, might be online only though I couldn't find them for that price in store. Also chicken tenderloin 2kg bags $9.99 a kg

  • 2kg porterhouse for $50, not bad if you live close to one.

    • Towards the front they had trays of porterhouse marked at $30 for 3 steaks which is about 1kg but originally marked as $37~. They looked much thicker and definitely better quality so I wonder how the two compare considering the price difference. The steaks comes in vacuum sealed bags but are at least twice as thick as aldis and don't show much fat in the meat itself similar to the $30 ones. I'm no expert though so my review will probably be useless for most.

      • i cook aldi porterhouse and it’s tender BUT problem is the steaks are thin, so need to be quick, think they are thin , about 200-250g each so you get 4 steaks to feed family under $25… prefer my steaks at 500g each think the listed deal says you get 6 steaks , in packs of 2 but then it says 400g ..so must be 200g each?

        • It's 3 in each pack which is meant to be 400g so 133g a steak but that doesn't seem right as it's definitely thicker than the Aldi porterhouse I'll check the package later and see what the weight says.

        • The porterhouse they had out the front was 3 steaks for $30 and was around 1kg, they seemed huge though. I also normally cut my Aldi steak like a stir fry but I probably won't go there often for my steak anymore if I can spend a little more and get a better cut.

  • I don’t know about the comment cooking burger patties in the deep fryer..

  • I'd never buy beef from anywhere but Costco now, the quality is very high. Someone mentioned briskets, the Costco briskets are high end stuff. They have MSA rump (called sirloin by them per USA naming) at Costco for $13.99 kg that eats like a much better cut.
The rib eye at Costco is one of best steaks I've ever had

    • the pork knuckles are amazing highly recommend them they are proper German style, too I couldn't tell the difference between the knuckles I had in Germany from the costco ones, they must have Germans cooking it :D they are very good.

  • looks good, used to buy their bulk nugget packs back in the day maybe its time to do a trip to super butcher again

    • +1

Yeah it's not too bad, I've only tried the chicken burgers so far and the taste is comparable to the Tegal crunch burgers but they are bigger and likely contains real chicken compared to Tegals.

  • why is there so much sugar in the sausages ? ewww

  • Worth a try but can be a lottery regarding the freshness. I’ve been burnt on more than one occasion with meat that seems a bit off including with a Christmas ham one time. Hopefully they have improved their game.

    • Was that specifically in the packs? I'll keep an eye out. All the dates on meats are best before 10/03 or later, except for the chicken burgers which are 05/03. Hopefully it all lasts will end up chucking steaks in the freezer though.

      • Yeah we have had problems with the 5 for $50 packs but that was a couple of years back or more.

It’s a great deal if the meat is fresh. Get it out and have a smell of it and freeze it in ziplock bags if it’s all good.

Good find OP. Pretty sure the 5 for $50 deal has been running continuously for years with the products changing every fortnight or month or something but you do make a good saving compared to buying the items separately so definitely worthy of posting.

        • Steaks are vacuum sealed so will have to make sure it's algoods when I open it, they are discolored due to oxidisation but shouldn't be a problem when I take them out the bags. If the steak seems no good I'll just stick to the lower end items both kievs and chicken burgers seem to be larger and also cheaper than options elsewhere and chicken burgers even though going out of date the soonest seem to be fresh. Hopefully the rest of the meat will be good I think if the steaks turn out to be good than overall it's good value but it's not amazing, comparable to Cole's/woolies maybe a bit cheaper but seems to be good quality in this pack

  • If in Sydney and you like lamb, then I'd suggest https://mudgeemeat.com.au/products/grass-fed-hogget?variant=…

    • Nice I was born in Mudgee but hardly worth a 6 hour round trip for some lamb right?

      • I am not sure exactly where you are - you'd need to check their delivery zones.

But yeah, if you are in Queensland it may not work so well. But there are similar "get a whole lamb" kind of operations in Queensland (and likely cheaper than in NSW).

        • Oh yeah worth it if they deliver, I've definitely seen a few around here that would workout to be heaps cheap even buying half the lamb but would be worried about freezer burn over time and if the power goes out would need a generator has taken some areas up to a week to get power back after storms recently.

          • +1

@lookingforadeal7: Mudgee vacuum packs them (and I assume most of their competitors do), so no risk of freezer burn. But yeah, a power outage would be an issue. :)

            • @mjwills: Nice I'll probably look into doing it does seem like a good option if you meal plan and portion correctly. Power outage would be my only issue can take food to a friend's or families in another suburb if it happens but if it's flood related like recently than we would have been screwed if we had a large amount of food.
