50% off Gym Bod Ice Cream 475ml $5.25 @ Coles

1621

Hey everyone, GYM BOD is 50% off this week at all Coles Supermarkets in Australia, this is our biggest sale price.

I work for GYM BOD in Banyo, QLD so i thought i would share this offer and tell you a bit about the business!

About GYM BOD
GYM BOD is a low calorie, low sugar and high protein dessert that was made as a better option to your normal everyday ice cream. BOD stands for better option dessert.

GYM BOD started in a garage in 2018 in Toowoomba, Queensland by a young couple when they had the idea to make high protein, low calorie soft serve out of a truck for gym-goers! One thing led to another and it's now available in a tub at Coles! Cian & Courtney still own and run the business here in Banyo. All of the manufacturing is done in-house and the Owners still work out of the factory helping do all the everyday tasks!

I'm telling you all this because from the surface when you see our product on the shelves you probably assume its a massive company but in reality we're just a small aussie business!!

Cheers, I like this product, but find it out of my price range at the RRP.

    • So buy it when it's half price.

  • +1

@BenGYMBOD do you have a factory outlet for Brisvegans?

    • Unfortunately we don't have a factory outlet. Jam Donut is currently our only plant based option on the market. We do however love going to gyms and businesses so people can try our product! If there is ever an event that attracts the BrisVegans then we would love to attend. DM us on Instagram for best response times!

      Ingredients
Water, Cream, Whey Protein Concentrate, Vegetable Fibre Wheat Flour, Sugar, Vegetable Fat, Cocoa, Golden Syrup, Salt, Baking Powder, Natural Vanilla Flavour

  • Can some gym rat tell me honestly if this is a healthier alternative to regular ice cream or is it just as bad as chocolate chobani mix?

    • +2

      chobani

yoooo have you seen the sugar content in some of those chobani mix flavous?

      • +1

        They do a no-sugar version now…

        • +2

Big thumbs up on the no-sugar Chobani. It's not overly sweet, only very mildly. They add lactase, which breaks down the lactose into simpler, better-tasting sugars. It's the same reason why lactose-free milk is sweeter than regular milk.

The vanilla one is good. I didn't really like the berry one though. There's a mango one too that I haven't tried yet.

    • Less carbs… More protein

    • +5

The macros look better as an alternative to full cream ice-cream with refined sugars.

This has (per 100g) about 3g of sugar instead of >20g, about 5g of saturated fat instead of >10g, and about 7g protein instead of about 3g.

But that's about as far as you can go in defining this as healthier. The micronutrient value is very poor (it's ice-cream!). It has a longer ingredient list, including more processed derivatives and use of artificial sweeteners. The average consumer will eat a higher portion of this cf. other ice-creams. Protein content is still low, at least at the recommended portion and the advised frequency of consumption (a treat <once/week).

This will be similar (arguably worse) than other ice-cream. If you have the discipline to have this as a treat, I say pick the one you enjoy as your treat. What is marginally better or worse is a misdirected consideration.

Let me tell you something, get the normal chobani, non flavoured tub when it’s on sale. Take a scoop of whey and mix it in, throw in some frozen mixed berries if you like, you’re welcome.

But also, alternatives like this to normal ice creams aren’t that bad either, if it helps you stick to your goals who tf cares, just eat it. If your goal is weight loss, weight gain whatever it is, sometimes if it fits your macros then go for it. The more you restrict certain food groups the larger the cravings get imo at least.

For weight loss or weight gain it’s cals in cals out, you could lose a shit ton of weight eating burgers everyday or gain a shit ton of weight eating oats and protein shakes too. Again it’s better to eat wholesome fresh food, but this isn’t going to do you much or if any harm either.

    • This would be useful for someone in a heavy caloric deficit, with high protein targets who wanted to satisfy a craving for icecream.

You can just as easily get some icecream that is low sugar and measure out a similar amount (in regards to kilojoules/calories, not weight) and chances are it'll come to the same or near enough to that quantity. Realistically, you don't care about the protein target so you may as well eat something that tastes better and doesn't cost a fortune.

I like the peters no sugar added stuff, Macros aren't as good but it satisfies a craving and if I need more protein I'll just drink a shake. Not expensive either by comparison to the other "healthy" options.

  • This looks cool - can anyone who has tried this and Halo Top chime in on their thoughts? Thanks

    • I prefer Gym Bod…

Try one, and if you like it, buy more…

How come the serving size is 90g and 3 servings per pack. (3x90=270g). What happens to the other 200grams.

    • +4

ml = liquid weight, g = when frozen. I hate it too.

      • Thanks for that. So compared to something like Ben and Jerries This isn’t as dense as I think their servings grams are around 140

        • Probably whipped with more air, makes it lighter and less caloric dense while giving the illusion of volume

    • +1

      Grams vs Millilitre

  • Only cookies and cream, and chocolate pudding for me. The other flavours are shite, especially the Salted Caramel Choc Top.

    • Interesting they have salted caramel choc top and vanilla caramel. Sounds like one is caramel mixed with vanilla, and one caramel mixed with chocolate.

  • Will purchase few tabs to support you OP. I am on bulking phase right now, will substitute some meals next week.

    • I am on bulking phase right now, will substitute some meals next week.

🤣 That certainly is an alternative to the usual chicken breast and rice!

      • We will have to make that happen. haha

        • Please send pre and post pics 😅

  • Good deal. Great company. Keep it up team. Its good to see the ozb community support small businesses

  • Will i get a gymbod if i eat it regularly?

  • Can anyone actually comment on how these taste and what the general macro nutritional profile looks like for a serving?

  • Grabbed Cookies & Cream. For a low sugar, low cal, high protein treat it's actually quite good. Tub is slightly bigger than your palm and packed to the lid. Very reasonable at half price.

    • slightly bigger than your palm and packed to the lid

Big hollow section at the bottom though to make it look bigger than it really is…

      • Yep fair call

  • What the hell's a gym?

    • Try pronouncing it differently..

    • +1

      Ohhhh. A gym.

      • +1

Now step over to the abdominator and I will shout slogans at you.

  • Love the idea and congrats on getting stocked on a national level! I've been trying to watch my sugar and calorie consumption, the weekend sweets have been the bane of my existence but having these better options make the cheat treats feel less guilty.

    • It's slightly less than 1 serving of whey in each tub

  • +11

the sweeteners in this when i tried it the once, made me:

    a) pee like a race horse every 30 minutes, for hours - not great in summer and trying to avoid dehydration
    b) made my stomach rumble

honest feedback, and not a premium experience commensurate with the price

maybe use Stevia as i use that daily in everything, no side effects

    • Agreed and +1 for Stevia.

There must be a reason many maufactuers go for the dodgy sugar alcohols over Stevia. Maybe a cost thing or they need the sugar alcohol substitutes as a filler.

      • There must be a reason many maufactuers go for the dodgy sugar alcohols over Stevia.

I personally can taste stevia in everything and can’t stand the flavour. I know I’m a minority in this, but it might be that whoever is agreeing on the final ingredients have opted against stevia for the same reasons.

That being said, the target market for something like this is probably a market that eats other products with stevia in it, so wouldn’t have a problem if it were in this too.

        • I think it is because stevia provides no volume, which for many products is needed.

  • +1

    from ingredients page:
It has many *tols i.e. artificial chemical sweeteners.
and maltodextrin that has 3X glycemic index than sugar i.e. instant blood sugar spike.
even the actual white sugar is far better than these two.

    • +5

Lots of keyboard chemists here in the comments section….
Seeing how maltodextrin is listed basically at the end of the ingredients list (after salt!) I’d imagine the amount of maltodextrin actually contained is very little (eg. mg, 1000x fold less than sugar). So I don’t think your concern about the blood sugar spike is that relevant.

    • +3

The *tols are not artificial chemical sweteners (such as aspartame, saccharine, and sucralose).

They are instead sugar alcohols which are a modified sugar (they mess around with the molecules to make them).

Sugar alcohols (the *tols - sorbitol, xylitol, and maltodextrin etc) play havoc on the intestinal tract, feeding bacteria in the bowel and creating bloating, gas, farting, craps, diahorrea.

Stevia is neither. Is from a natrual plant, and has no negative effect on the body. For some reason manufacturers mostly go for the artificial sweeteners or the sugar alcohols.

      • *That was supposed to be cramps haha, but yes that too.

  • -1

    475ml tub of chemicals…No thanks!

  • This or Connoisseur ice cream ?

    • Completely different products. Connoisseur is obviously going to taste better, but has a lot more sugar and worse macro profile.

    • Ones low cal and ones normal ice cream

  • Toowoomba garage represent!

  • Brandishes it as a healthy alternative but a single look at the ingredients will tell you how crappy it is health wise and the audacity to charge $5+ for 475 ml lol. Sadly there would be a lot of people who would fall for the marketing and shell out bucks for this.

  • +8

I hate to be an annoying vegan OP but carmine in the "plant based" variety is decidedly not plant based and is instead made from insects.

    • Thanks, do any other flavours have insects?

Edit: strawberry also has it so will be avoiding that

    • Thanks! That's wild that they can still call it plant-based then??

    • +4

I did not know this, and I don't think it's being an annoying vegan to point out something obviously isn't vegan if it's labelled as such.

I'm vegetarian and it really grinds my gears when I order something vegetarian and it's far from it. I don't expect to be catered for, I'm the one with a different diet to most - but I expect staff to know whether a particular dish is / isn't vegetarian.

Fair enough overseas it's an absolute nightmare to communicate this, but I'll cop that language and cultural barrier as it's perfectly reasonable. Shouldn't be an issue locally.

    • thanks for pointing this out. I bought one tub to try and support OP but being a vegetarian this will probably be my last time too unless OP decides to change the ingredients.

  • +3

    technically not ice cream..

    From Gym BOD FAQ

There is a very technical definition of Ice Cream. In order for a product to be an Ice Cream it must have 100 g/kg of milk fat; and 168 g/L of food solids. GYM BOD Ice Crem doesn't meet these parameters, so we therefore cannot call our product Ice Cream, as that would be misleading to consumers. We do not want to mislead any one! Our technical product classification is "Frozen Dessert". We think Ice Crem is a playful way of alluding to what GYM BOD is striving to emulate. *

  • Thanks for the post. Got some on way home from the gym today! Tasty with some berries the chocolate pudding one is!

  • +2

Would love it if it wasn't for the dodgy sugar alcohols that upset the gut.

I personally get bloating and farting on these (many protein bars also have them). If you notice this when you have protein bars or ice cream, it's probably why.

NFI why companies like this don't just use Stevia. It does not have this affect and is a natural sweetener. I'd be all over it if it did.

    • +3

Yeah it sounds like a trombone lesson in my lounge room when I polish off a tub of this

      • Yeah, I had a tub and can confirm that the gas produced the next day was extreme. I won't be buying it again.

    • I've read that some people find that stevia has a bitter aftertaste so some companies avoid it for that reason.

      • +1

Ironically it's most effective taste wise in cold products. Also it's most effective when used with sugar (i.e. reduce the sugar by 75% and add a bit of stevia - virtually the same taste).

I use stevia a lot and search for it in low calorie products, think it tastes great so long as not overdone.

The chemical sweeteners taste the worst to me, aspartame, sucralsoe, and saccaharine. The sugar alcholos are really bad for the gut (I think it's used more so because they need the volume that sugar provides, stevia doesn't have volume).

So I go for real sugar items (that hopefully don't use much - rare in our western diet these days) or even better stevia, or combo.

  • +1

Tried the Choc pudding, pretty good. My local vegan store does protein "ice cream" 3 tubs for $10 so I'd still prefer those for cost and taste.

  • Hey OP you know hey they had Jarrod from Subway lose a bunch of weight by just eating subway and was all over their promo content until he…you know.

Well, what if you supplied me with unlimited gym bod ice cream and I get absolutely (profanity) diced by eating nothing but icecream all day, every day.

    • +1

You’ll be shitting through a fly screen in no time

      • +1

        Worth it

  • +1

Just be mindful with these gym food alternatives - includes protein bars and other 'health foods'.

There is generally still a high saturated fat content.

    https://www.coles.com.au/product/gym-bod-ice-cream-salted-ca…

For example has 5.9g of fat of which 4.3g is saturated fats.

It's still far better than regular ice cream and has half the calories per 100g.

    • Need to look at the density of it too. Sure per 100g half the calories, but I find these are usually really dense and you can have a comparable serving of ice cream for the same calories.

I can't comment on this one though as I haven't tried it.

  • Why would i buy protein ice cream when i can have normal ice cream and a protein shake that's like 1/4 the price?

    • +1

Because it’s double the calories, these arnt just higher protein, they are low calorie - that’s the selling point

      • and low sugar

  • After your write up here BenGYMBOD i decided to gve it a try.

Coles cancelled my order as out of stock so not much of a promotion really.

  • didn't realise there are so many health conscious people here. People sure love to pile on certain deals

  • Please tell them to remove the crushed bugs from Jam Donut. Then it would actually be plant based.

  • Just ordered 15 tubs, so hopefully Coles has them in stock and they're somewhat comparable to Halo Top (or worst case, Kenny's).

    • I'd be interested to know how this compares with Halo Top/Denada

  • Got Coolies and Cream today - tasted like frozen water chips - 10/10 do not recommend

    • Low calorie ice creams you need to let defrost before eating it

  • Is anyone able to compare this ice cream (texture/feel/etc) with Denada?
