Japan Travel - Pocket Wi-Fi Monthly

Hi All,

Have been researching pocket WiFis for an upcoming trip to Japan (17 days). Everywhere I see the recommendation seems to be providers with "daily" rental. However, I found some monthly rental providers which seem to work out cheaper even if I pay for the full month. For e.g. https://wi-firental.com/

What am I missing? Is there a catch with the monthly plans?

i used pocket wifi my previous two trips (from global advanced comm) but my next one in 2 weeks I'll be using esims from Airalo - too cheap to consider anything else.

  • Esim by Airalo would be my recommendation. Easy install, easy de-install and convenient.

eSim by Ubigi will be better. I've used both in Tokyo and Ubigi is faster and on LTE/5G while Airalo stays on 4G.

Pocket WiFi battery doesn’t last long, you’re gonna be charging it often. I would just buy a sim and just use that instead

We have done the Pocket WiFi before. Sure it is good if you have a few devices and you'll all be within the same area for usage.

But these days a esim per person is better. More so if you will be apart and need data etc to stay in contact. So each person gets a esim data sim and can hot spot to their other devices as needed.

  • Fair point regarding eSIMs. Will look into these.

Any recommendations for physical SIMs? -at least one of us does not have a phone with eSIM

  • Book a pocket wifi on Klook

  • I used pocket wifi on my previous trips to Japan, but on my upcoming trip, will be doing Esim via Travelkon for the convenience.

Haven't used them before, but good review on Ozbargain and semms to have sales quite often.

  • Hi, I'll soon be travelling to Japan. Just wanted to know if Optus works fine in Japan or should I just go ahead and purchase a pocket wifi? Any help would be much appreciated.
