I bought it at $50 more last week, best purchase I've made in a while given that I didn't even think of getting a smartwatch. Couldn't be happier.

  • +4

These are the best overall fitness watches, dont have to baby the battery or worry about scratches or smashes like an apple watch.

    • +1

If battery is your flavour I'd argue the Instinct range is best. I easily get a month on my Instinct 2X. In fact I can count the amount of times I've charged it since getting it 6 months ago on one hand.

      • +1

Instinct looks like G-Shock watch :)

        • +1

that's a plus for me, also reason why i picked my instinct 2s solar over all other models.

a sport watch should look the part. hate the chrome/glossy bezels

      • That's the extreme end though.

If you want all the features of the Epix but with a better battery life (But also don't want a black and white display with plastic chassis of the Instinct) then you can get the Fenix series, which has month+-long battery life instead of 1-2 weeks of the Epix.

        • +1

Just check you don’t need map navigation. I think the mapping on the Epix is better with a higher resolution screen, and maybe more features in that area.

        • It may be a polymer case but it's basically impossible to scratch it. Knocked my watch on so many surfaces and not a single visible scratch to be seen. Love it for that.

          • @Tacooo: Oh it's definitely durable, but I'm talking from an aesthetic perspective. Looks nice is all :)

      • Tyrone Rugen, is that you? :D

    • Garmin are also better for the 24/7 HRV monitoring and 'body battery' / 'stress' levels.

That said, apple care covers the smashes with the Apple watch.

Looks sweet! Still rocking my 6 Pro but that screen and flashlight..

    • I’m tempted as well! 6 Pro is going strong but these look fantastic

    • +1

me too 6 pro going strong on my wrist for 4+ years daily. Maybe I'll wait another 1 year and see what's there.

    • What flashlight?
Pretty sure only the Pro version (51mm) has a flashlight.

I have the same model from the ad (fantastic watch btw), and it only has the "bright screen" flashlight "app" (which does help to find a sock in the drawer with the lights off, but not much more than that).

      • Ah yes you're right, only the Pro has it. Back to square one, really don't want the large/52mm 7 fenix for the flashlight

Tempted as well, I have a 6. Love it, but sick of charging it every 10 or so days if I do a couple of runs.

    • +1

10 days per charge is pretty good for a smart watch though. My Fenix 6X I recharge weekly as I usually do 3 runs a week, but so much better than any other smart watch I've seen or heard about. I had a galaxy watch at some point and having to recharge it daily was a nightmare

      • Yeah I had a couple of Android watches but the daily charging just annoyed me. I'd like to go a month if possible.

      • I have this Epix now, which I absolutely love, but since I never sleep with my watch, charging the Galaxy Watch 4 every night was never an issue for me.

I actually find the magnetic charger much more convenient than the "plug" in the Garmins, especially when using one of those holders for the charger..
Ddidn't need two hands to connect or disconnect the charger.

    • +1

I got into a routine of putting mine on charge while showering after activities and that reduced the need to do a decent charge quite a bit.

  • +1

    Garmin Fenix® 7X Solar.
Does this mean that if I work outdoors all day, I won't have to recharge my batteries due to the beautiful sunshine?

    Epix

Gen Z has apparently entered the workforce and now working at Garmin.

  • Is this the 7X with the sapphire screen?

    • Fenix and Epix both sport different screen, the Epix being AMOLED and is gorgeous but is a battery sucker, while the 7X is still the old not-so-flashy screen but gives you 1month battery life

  • i will wait for epix gen2 pro

    • Me too!

    • Isn't the only major change with that one an upgraded heart rate monitor?

    • Any indication of an ETA?

  • Garmin epix ™ (Gen 2) Sports Watch (Slate Steel) $774 jbhifi
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/garmin-epix-gen-2-sports-…

    • +2

That version doesn’t have the Sapphire screen, and has only half of the storage (16 vs 32GB IIRC).
And in my opinion, it isn’t as sweet looking.

  • If you use CJK languages and haven't had experience with Garmin watches before, be aware that some of the models don't show notifications in CJK characters but just a bunch of question mark blocks. A bit annoying considering the same models in Asian markets can show notifications just fine.

    • pretty sure it is now supported in this watch. My 6 pro isn't, so I got a bunch of question marks.

  • Do people generally sleep with these on? I have the 645 and sleep with it on to track my sleep and I wonder if the additional 3mm in height and 5mm in diameter will make it noticeable. In store I've always found the Epix and Fenix a big big

    • +1

      Pretty chunky for sleeping IMO

      • Just found out it is 30g heavier too. Almost double what the 645 is.. I mean it looks nice though.

I'll wait till mine carks it properly rather than just a few pixels to decide

        • It can be done have slept with mine on occasion but hard to do all the time.

    • Just gotta train harder and fall asleep easier

    • I sleep with mine every night. It never leaves my wrist unless it's on charge.
I do not find it a hinderence at all.
Note: I have the medium size. Not the small. Not the X (large).

    • I used to charge my previous watches overnight and only started wearing a watch to sleep with the epix thanks to its fantastic battery life. I don't notice it at all.

  • Grabbed one, keen to give it a whirl tracking skiing!

  • Anyone know how "grey" the Carbon Grey colour is? Or is it essentially black?

  • Anyone come from a Fenix 5/6/7s to this? I've got skinny wrists and just wondering if it's going to be too big.

Considering this one as the battery life on GPS is longer and the GPS is more accurate than my 5s plus.

  • Anyone gone from a Galaxy Watch to one of these?

    • I went from a Galaxy Watch 4 + Fenix 6 to this Epix. I used the GW4 for notifications thanks to its nice AMOLED touchscreen and only used the Fenix 6 for tracking activities, which was silly. I switched to the Epix and am very satisfied - it's the best of both worlds. It'd be nice if I could answer calls on it but since I rarely speak on the phone it's not a big deal for me.

  • +2

Ah what the heck. Bought one.

  • This seems like a pretty decent upgrade from the Instinct I've had for a bit over 4 years. Still has heaps of battery life but the band needs replacing. Excuse for an upgrade?

  • +1

Thanks OP! Ordered one just now through JB Hi-Fi. They priced matched for me. Paid $10.99 for Uber ASAP, so it'll be here in 90 minutes. Exciting! (I've been looking at getting this since December 2022, so definitely very, VERY excited)

    • Received 👏🏻👏🏻

  • I'm curious what anyone who switched to one of these from a Galaxy watch misses. I just keep reading that it doesn't compare as a smartwatch - but what actual features did you miss? I'd be coming from a galaxy 5 pro

    • Responding with a custom message to emails and notifications

    • I've come from a GW4 Classic and got mine yesterday. So far I haven't missed anything really, I only ever really used my GW4 smart features for checking notifications, and the Garmin does just fine. Enjoying the battery life so far.

    • I switched from a Galaxy Watch 4. I personally don't miss any features. It'd be nice if I could answer calls on the watch but I hardly ever do it so it hasn't really bothered me.

  • Epix 2 expired, Fenix 7 still available. I marked as expired
