  • Does this make a good vertical monitor?

    • +5

This is my secondary set vertically. My primary is same size 1440p 170hz gaming monitor. The 4k is noticeably more sharp and text is way better.

Also works well as a mac monitor. Windows scaling is okay. Not amazing for some things especially given my primary has no scaling, so it's a bit jarring between monitors but it's been a great secondary! If I had the space, I'd probably split it off to be a primary wfh monitor only for a simpler work only setup!

60Hz is plenty for excel my friend! But yes, not a good gaming monitor I agree though however.

A fellow Hz truther, the OP posted the Hz in the deal description, we are not needed brother

  • Can I use 2 for a dual monitor set-up without a docking station or is one still required?

    • +2

I do this from my intel-based mac. I don’t have a dock, but I am using two monitors and two ports on my laptop, one for each monitor.

It’s more cables, but it works and no dock purchase required.

      • Thanks. Think I'd rather use a docking station.

    • I was going to do this or buy the ones with a hub.

But figured i was better buying the cheaper monitor in the last dell deal and get a proper docking station.

    • Can I daisy chain a second (non usb-c) monitor to this one using hdmi or DP?

  • +1

Considering some laptop dock stations can cost ~$200 this is a pretty good deal.

  • Any one used it with a M chip macbook? I have a Dell S2721QS and I found the I had to connect the Macbook's HDMI port to it to get it work in 60fps mode. If I use a C-to-HDMI or C-to-DP adapter, it flicked frequently unless I set the Macbook display in 30fps mode, which is annoying.

I believe it's a M-chip & Dell compatibility issue, because this very monitor worked well with an intel-based Macbook.

    • +3

A common issue. I had same problem with S2721Q and S2722QC. Contact Dell service and request exchange. Last time it took me 2 exchanges to get a perfect S2722QC. The flick is more easy to occur if you are in a dark theme.

I have an M1 MBP and M2 MBA which works fine with the included USB C to USB C cable. Provides A/V and power through the one cable no issues so far. Been using it for a few months now.

    • +3

Use the included USB-C cable provided by Dell and make sure you are running latest Mac OS (especially if it is M1).

If your Intel Macbook Pro is 2017 or older, swapping between that and your Apple Silicon Macbook could cause issues (since the monitor has to switch between DP 1.2 and DP 1.4 mode).

Don't use USB-C to HDMI dongle with this monitor. It completely defeats the purpose. Other than the Apple official dongle (and must be the newer version), a lot of the cheap ones can't do 4K HDR. If you must use USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to DisplayPort cable, then make sure you get 8K capable version (because a lot of the 4K / 60Hz ones are dodgy).

USB-C to USB-C should work for Apple Silicon based Macs with this monitor.

I bought this I think in 2021 for $369 from Dell eBay deal. Worked well with my MacBook Pro M1 Pro 14 through the included usb c to usb c cable.

My recommendation for you would be to install this app called Lunar. With it you can control your monitors brightness and sound through Mac OS instead of having to use monitors manual buttons (Lunar uses DDC (Display Data Channel) which this Dell has). Wish I used it earlier cause it was annoying using manual buttons
Another is f.lux. The difference between f.lux and night shift from Apple is it works for your Mac and the monitor whereas night shift only appears on MacBook screen.

Things that annoyed me with this monitor is that:
      -HDR is bad
-Sound is tinny and terrible. Like I could never use in built speakers to even learn just watching a simple YouTube video it was that quite and unclear.
-Mac and 4K doesn’t scale well for resolution.
-The picture isn’t anything compared to a retina xdr display. Like colours and everything is just so meh. Yes I know one is lcd and one is mini led. Again I’m not even a graphic professional but like I was applied by inbuilt MacBook Pro Display!

That’s why I’m upgrading now to apple studio 5k display monitor which for around $2k I reckon is a much better deal, holds its value and will be much better integration for the next 5+ years easily. Way better for text and everything in general.

If studio display was out then I would have gotten it, and skipped this, but this is a great cheap monitor if you don’t care about things I said. Especially the usb c connection. Never have to use MagSafe again!

I got it around same time for that deal too, great monitor for the price. Did you ever have image retention issues and screen flickering. Its happened to me a few times and work around was to leave it off for quite some time, unplugged from power.

        • Hey I’ve heard of that but I never experience those issues. I used usb c only and also with ps5 and no issues

        • Mine gets these issues, especially the flicker, and it varies from annoying to unusable. Seems to happen once every few months and then disappears just as suddenly. Giving it a day off seems to be the only way to fix it. Used almost exclusively with a Mac, both with HDMI and USB-C. Seems to be less prevalent through USB-C or have just been lucky.

        • Try leaving the calibration routine running overnight. Since I did that a couple of years ago, it's only happened once late last year, did it again and hasn't happened since.

      • +2

Yes, this monitor is pretty much the cheapest way to get 4K/60Hz with USB-C. HDR400 is fake HDR. Apple StudioDisplay costs 5 times more.

If you have Apple Silicon Pro/Ultra/Max series of Apple devices, then you probably want a better monitor than Dell. However, Mac Mini's entry price is $850 so not everyone is willing to spend $2000+ on a monitor.

S2721QS does not support USBC to laptops (Windows or Mac)

S2722QC (on this post) can do that, new monitor time :p

  • what's the story with Hz? Is it not enough to use for home office? General computing and programing?
I'd like to buy but there's no urgency. Have you seen the better deal than this or should I buy now?

    • +1

The hz is totally OK for home office. It is even OK for light game I believe.

    • Settle down, dont worry too much about Hz if you are just using for work and even light gaming. I was using 60Hz model for last 5yrs for work and played few games without much drama.

    • +1

I bought mine 2 years ago for about $400, this is the best price in 2 years I can say.

    • Thanks guys. Any recommendation for the USB Hub to go with this one?

      • KMART one works if you dont need to charge any devices

Got one with discount for the usb hub. Thanks!

Just found out that Dell S2722QC comes with 3W integrated speakers too!

  • $358.70 now

  • I want to use this monitor for my Macbook Air M3, but I'm worried that the text will be blurry on the monitor. Will it be ok?
