  • Prefer Telstra network

Well there is only a few choices there….

    • That's why I said prefer, but will consider $$ difference if value for money

Flip mobile $4.00 per mth 100 SMS/MMS, 100 min std calls, 500MB data. At age 97 going month-to-month at low cost may be preferable to 12m in advance.

    • WOW That is cheap Optus network I suppose is ok Just low bars there but still works…..

    • At age 97 going month-to-month at low cost

Implying he will die in a year?

Implying he will die in a year?

        what is the probability?

        • Dunno, probably not worth thinking about over $200

@deme: Exactly Wife has told him je's not allowed to go anywhere till he at least hit 100…. Need the letter from Charlie…..

            • +1

@fprjet: Will Charlie be even around then to send the letter? Might be the next in line ;)

          • @deme: It was a joke, son! Try to keep up.
You know, like when you say "How long do I have, doc?", and he says “Don’t buy any green bananas”.

      • There aren't any $60 pre-paid plans any more, so getting a service that meets his needs for $48 over 12m is worth considering.

Get a $230 boost prepaid sim. They use the Telstra network and it avoids accidental extra charges. You might be able to find deals and cash back as well so worth searching up.

Telstra also have their own plans for seniors so you can look them up too.

Back in my day people could find their own mobile plan

    • Not even an original question any more. Search of the forums would have been sufficient.

Back in my day we walked down to the corner store to use a public phone because my folks didn't have the money for a home line …so cut the dude a break or I'll tell you all about how to cut my toenails I used to have to take a bus to shelbyville that had a three hour transfer just past the fig tree that had been cursed my old Mr Toddington tight after the Prussian empire started cracking down on who got to eat biscuits in a can on the weekend

Thanks mate to be true I used to program Analogue mobiles in the day and sold mobiles when GSM kicked in up until 2005, mid 50's now and even though I consider myself tech Savvy the younger blokes are much better at finding the bargains…..

    ALDI PAYG

    • Aldin uses telstra network (also boost?)

  • Prefer Telstra network as in Caulfield south as Optus is average reception there….
    Suggestions???

As it's basically Telstra or Telstra or Telstra then, have a look at all the Telstra MVNO and their plans. Pick one you like.

    • Optus coverage is average but still works……

  • Thanks all, appreciate input…. Yes I could have researched my own but could still miss something…….That Flip deal sounds like a winner, thanks sumyungguy….
Optus will do the job…..I was just seeing if any Telsta wholesalers had anything close…..

  • AldiMobile could be an alternative.

  • Woolworths mobile have $25/ month plans and you get 10% off your shop once a month which can cover some/all of the cost depending on the grocery bills. They also use the Telstra network (although the lesser NVMO network).
As has been said, Boost use the whole Telstra network and are "better", although we have both in our house and I don't see any real difference in normal usage.

    • "and you get 10% off your shop once a month"

      ONLY FOR PERSONAL SHOPPING!

For some reason, which I can't fathom, does not include 10% discount for online shopping.

      Otherwise, I would have joined.

kogan mobile, Vodafone , so check his coverage . $120/yr 120GB

  • One of your cheapest options is Amaysim PAYG but it's on Optus. Minimum $10 credit which lasts a year (but if you recharge with another $10 at the end of that year all credit expiry is extended for 12 months).
Depends how chatty he is on those ~5 calls. At 12c/min that's 83 mins worth for your $10.

    • Hmmm that technically better than flip…..He can call us and hang-up we ring back…. Chances he will ever call us a slim except mobile has emergency call feature to call us….He had medi alert that calls centre if he falls over but this is more if he goes out of view on the cameras and we can call to check he is ok…

Aldi mobile, PAYG/365 day expiry after you top it up from the $5 credit included.

I have a second device I just put $15 per year recharge, just to keep the number, and to make about 1/2 dozen calls and texts per year - ie. selling stuff on Gumtree…

ALDI is a minimum of $20 ($5 SIM + $15 recharge after 60 days), for first 14 months.

Amaysim is $10, and calls are cheaper - 12c/minute v 15c for Aldi.

  • Maybe consider an unlimited calls plan. My elderly dad was the same, very few calls made, he’d phone quickly & we’d call him back etc, until we realised he wasn’t making calls in case he ran out of minutes. He’s so much happier now. Just a thought.

Thanks but the only time he would make a call if it was dire emergency, he has med alert etc…. It's more so we can call him if we can't see him on the camera…. He is rarely left home alone but say we go out for dinner with friend s for a few hours just gives us peace of mind…..Lol when we use to call him on the home phone say 10 years ago we would be talking and when he finished talking he would hang up without saying Goodbye…..

Does he have an iPhone? Fall detection via Apple Watch is great for the elderly.

        • Thanks he has medi device that has fall detection and contacts medicentre if he falls or presses button… We got him a big button mobile as he has macular andit has a button on back for emergency that we can program our number into….

Telstra offer a cheap $48 yearly plan (emergency oubound calls only, unlimited inbound) for a medical watch. For example see Safelife medical watch. Works a treat for our 94 year old. Moreover, both watch purchase price and Telstra plan can be fully covered by MyAgedCare so no cost to you. Ask your elderly relations service provider.

    • Dam.. Already signed up for Amaysim @ Demme This is why I asked… Does it allow to dial a family member as well? He has a medi alert that he wears that dials out if he pressess the button to a medi call center. This is perfect though I hope someone searches the forum and finds this bit of info in the future…..There is so much out there for the elderley but unless you have been involved it's hard to find info….Thank you so much…..

      • +1

Dials first contact and if not answered in setable time dials 2nd contact, then 3rd, 4th etc. I have 000 as the 4th contact. Also sends sms to a set of chosen contacts with google map link showing location of device.

You can have access to all settings either thru SMS to phone OR thru USB using a linked PC and the program "ParamEdit-NoJDK-0.7.16"
