Panasonic DP-UB820 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player $589 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

61
AFTERPAY30

First time posting a deal, let me know if I need to change anything.

At $619 it's not as much of a discount as previous deals, but still around $150 off. Can stack another $30 off (total $589) though if you use the AFTERPAY30 coupon code.

Also available at The Good Guys for $619, where you might have better luck with stock in nearby stores. I went with The Good Guys myself because of quicker expected delivery date.

    Just why?????

  • -1

How is this close to being a deal when it is frequently sub-$450?? And even then, it is a TERRIBLE value product, and is still far overpriced, even though it is now SIX years old!

Lets say you're a 4K dolby vision buff, so that is a must have for you. Well, this is TWICE the price of the DP-UB450 which also supports 4K dolby vision.

Lets say you watch 100 4K blurays on this player — that's still $3 extra for each and every view over the UB450!

Last time it was sub 450 and posted to ozb was 2021.

      • +2

Sorry — you're right. It was $480 end of last year. That's still 19% less than this price.

Please tell me what else I'm missing, I would like to understand.

          • @ihuntbargains: That's ok, just curious why I was being buried in negs, if it was just the price I got wrong or something else.

            • @pinchies:

just curious why I was being buried in negs

I negged you and not even sure why. Just going with the flow I guess, like all things Internet which is the norm, innit?

            • @pinchies: It's rare for someone to tell you, other than simple herd mentality, but good luck

            • @pinchies: ozb can be like that.
I didn't neg you. I think they're probably negging because of the inaccuracy of your comment/deal neg reason.

No HDR Optimiser in the 450 - YMMV if that feature is useful for you or not.

    • +1

Here’s one reason: You can no buy region free firmware for the 450, but there is a free region free firmware for the 820 (with a little tech know how; eg you need to boot up a Linux VM).

Finding a DVD and Blu-ray region free 4K player cheaply with those features isn’t possible as far as I can tell. But yes, absolutely, it should be $450 or so.

Are you referring to the RattleByte solution where you also need to chip it, or is there another software only solution? Do you have a link you could share?

  • Sadly if I bought this, it would mostly be used as a CD player.

noob question: why this over a ps5?

    • +11

I think ps5 doesn’t have Dolby vision for 4k blu ray

    • Not sure why you're being negged for asking a very reasonable question.

    • Aside from Vision, from reviews I've seen they all say the picture quality is slightly better too compared to a ps5.

      • It's only slight. It's noticeable if you're a quality enthusiast, but it's a bit of a case of "If you're asking why, it might not be the product for you".

        • The disc drive itself is quieter for those quiet scenes

          • @bighalf: That's true. There are probably 5 perks to the UB820, give or take. It's why I bought it. But at ≈ $100 per perk, it's not for everyone.

    Brick.

    • $450 or no deal!

Great bluray player, but dont accidently press the netflix button or you'll be sitting there forever waiting for it to load so you can close it again.

    • +1

Getting a UB9000 style remote off eBay/Amazon for $20 is well worth the investment.

      • Looks like that one also had the Netflix button?

        • I think it's a common nitpick of the UB820 remote that it's so close to the direction buttons that it's often pressed by accident.

It's the firstest of first world problems lol, but those of us who buy this shit are pretty picky, to be fair :p

          • +1

@Jake T: I've only hit the Netflix button once or twice in 2.5 years. It's over of those remotes that you can't use in the dark anyway.

            • +1

@reactor-au: Like I said, I THINK it's common. I've never hit it, myself lol. My girlfriend appreciates my ability to aim my finger in the dark.

              • @Jake T: From different boards I've seen it seems to be fairly common. For me its not that my thumb reaches it, its that my finger nail sometimes reaches far enough to push it down. And the frustration that it brings omg.

        • It does, but not in the same spot - lot harder to hit by mistake. UB9000 remote has a backlight button too.

  • I've been keeping an eye on this machine for a long time. Unfortunately, since 2023, it rarely goes below $500. That $480 deal was gone in minutes. I missed it.

So its not as someone said that it frequently goes below $450.

If I told you I already have the UB450, PS5 and Sony UBP-X800M2, and now i just bought this one using TGG ebay deal plus shop back 10%, what would you say?

    • How much does having to manually turn of/off Dolby Vision annoy you? That's the $589 question.

  • I got the UB420 about 5 years ago for $189 (Boxing Day specials), very happy with it so far. Main diff is no Dolby Vision in the UB420.
