The Patagonia Better Sweater® Men's Jacket can be worn over a shirt as outerwear or layered under a shell in the backcountry, it has a sweater-knit face and moisture-wicking fleece interior for warmth. Soft and bulk-free, it’s made of 10-oz 100% recycled polyester fleece dyed with a low-impact process that significantly reduces the use of dyestuffs, energy and water compared to conventional dyeing methods. Flat-seam construction reduces bulk and helps to eliminate seam chafe. A zippered left-chest pocket secures small valuables, and zippered handwarmer pockets keep fingers toasty. The stand-up collar has a zipper garage so your neck stays comfortable, while raglan sleeves provide pack-wearing comfort. Shape-holding, abrasion-resistant micropolyester jersey trims the collar, cuffs and hem. And it’s also Fair Trade Certified™ sewn, which means the people who made it earned a premium for their labour. Hip length.

The main item you linked is only 30% off

  • Thanks Copped

  • (Finally) got one. Thanks :)

can someone confirm whether patagonia is a legitimate charity?

    • +5

Yeah, they're as legit as they come. The founder has always been a bit of a hippy, he has a great story if you want to look him up.

    • +5

The owner gave away ownership of the entire company last year, with 98% of profits going to a NFP called Holdfast Collective.

      https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/sep/14/patagonias-b…

      • -3

        NFP's are tax free…

      • wow, I didnt know that. Great stuff

    • +3

It depends on your POV re: handing over $150+ for a recycled plastic garment, and why you'd be doing it.

      • Yes, one could just buy the same quality/product on a different brand for so much less and then give a donation to a charity of their choice.

        • +4

There’s also the working conditions and fair pay that Patagonia support that similar, cheaper ones may not.

        • +3

TL;DR: Yeah they're more expensive, but the quality is excellent and they actually follow through on their guarantee of repairing their stuff.

I've picked up a few Patagonia items over the years. Last year I ripped an insulated jacket when on a construction site, totally my fault. Took it into their Collingwood store to see if they could repair it because I love the jacket. Explained it was my fault and wanted to see if it could be repaired. They packaged it up, sent it away, and about 3 weeks later I had it back with the ripped panel and the surrounding panels all replaced at no charge. I've actually heard of people getting things repaired that are 20+ years old at no charge.

Could I buy cheaper stuff from Macpac/Kathmandu etc? Sure, but I'd rather spend a bit more on buying fewer, higher quality items that will last, and be repaired if things go wrong. Social enterprise aside, at least they're working to lessen landfill.

        • +1

I believe Patagonia incorporates the full lifecycle as part of their product planning - so as others have said the products last longer, plus they are also thinking about ways that at the end of life the product isn't ending up in landfill.

On the other hand, the cheap piece of fabric will likely end up in the tip sooner and the people who stitched it are probably paid a terrible living wage - especially if it was purchased from Shein or a similar fast fashion brand.

    • +1

patagonia has never been a charity - now it's more of a social enterprise

      • Great read, thanks for sharing

  • +2

Good jacket but pills a fair bit.

    • Was yours the 3/4 zip version or full zip? I found the full zip in black has been good so far.

  • By far my favourite jacket ever, versatile, excellent quality, comfortable to wear.

  • Thanks got one too

  • Can anyone comment on the fit of these jackets compared to their downs? I wear a small down jacket

    • +1

In my experience they run slightly bigger

      • Bigger than the downs or bigger than general?

  • -2

Yikes 150 for that, and that's on sale and it's recycled as well

    Yikes

Best try backcountry in the USA for good sales

    • +2

I'm concerned that you're talking about recycled material as being a bad thing…

I don't think Patagonia is a brand for you if you think that way

      • There is an argument for that you can endlessly recycle PET bottles but if you convert them into clothing then that’s an end point - you can’t recycle clothing.

But I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the argument being made by the person you were responding to

(And, yes, there are many other factors to take into account eg if you don’t use recycled products to make the clothes, what are you using and is it worse)

      • A recycled product should be cheaper in the consumers eyes - otherwise I'm sure most would just buy new new not new recycled. You know #psychology

        • Is wool new? After all, it’s been used before

  • I’m always tempted to try these types of jackets and spend time browsing the sales but the fact they are polyester puts me off, apparently release a lot of microplastics when wearing and washing.

    • +1

Yes but not too loud. The Patagonia fans will hear you

    • +1

What's a few micro plastics between friends

    • +1

The biggest thing that's making me hold off is how easily it pills apparently, they even have a video on how to take care of the pilling. I tend to wear a backpack a lot too so it'll probably pill a lot more as well, would've jumped at this in a heartbeat.

*Discount does not apply to the purchase of gift cards. Discount may not be used on sale or clearance items and not in conjunction with any other offer unless otherwise stated.

Edit: Just called up the Melb CBD store, gunna buy the quandary pants and also asked about the membership stacking on top of sale items. He said it don't stack.

    • Membership terms state: "Discount may not be used on sale or clearance items and not in conjunction with any other offer unless otherwise stated."?

      • +1

        Worked for me :)

    • +1

Do you have to buy it as a separate transaction first?

EDIT: All good, tried it myself. You can add it to cart but the discount won't show until the end (when you enter payment info). Worked for me also

  • They looked nice and I wanted to buy 1 but $150 for recycled polyester…I went back to be the cheapskate that I am.

    • All polyester flows into the ocean. I wouldn't worry about it
