Stuff giving that ripoff service any money

Serious question : what's the alternative?
      Taxis >> Uber >> Skybus

      • +9

Takes longer but, train from southern cross to Broadmeadows then the bus from Broadmeadows to airport $5.6 way.

        • +6

          Takes how much longer?

        • +7

But then you need to get off at Broadmeadows

        • -7

Hmm, so we already have public transport to the airport… what's the point of this stupid rail link?

      • +4

This page is a good resource.

      • PTV: train and bus. It’s an old post, prices have gone up a bit. Still cheaper.

    • +3

I miss pre-covid SkyBus where you'd take a connecting bus that did a loop around the city hotels.

Unfortunately there really isn't a cheaper alternative. I recently got a fake Uber down to $45 cash direct to my inner CBD hotel by price matching Uber's 20% off.

      • +1

        What's a fake Uber?

        • +5

Not fake Taxi. The drivers pretending to be Uber drivers at the airport and will negotiate a different rate. Typically take cash, Square or direct transfer.

Plenty of dodgy ones. This was a legit Uber driver who I offered a cashie.

          • @Clear: I've been offered a cancel and cash rate for Ubers before. Usually the cash discount they provide hasn't been significant enough to justify it.

THANK YOU! Was coming here specifically to check for SkyBus promo codes so this is great timing.

One of my old co-workers used to buy the $4 return child tickets and photoshop the child label into adult, worked for him on 100 odd occasions

    • they probably make a different beep sound for concession holders

I’d love to write a collective book on genius but questionably unethical OzBargain hacks

    • +2

Soooo fraud? Your old co-worker committed fraud ~100 times?

    • Reminds me of the days when public transport used MiFare cards without encryption. It didn't take much to recharge those for free.

      Or duping Uni door cards.

Melbourne has the worst airport travel by public transportation of all the major cities in the world.

Goto southern cross using uber or train-> take a stupid and expensive bus … and drag your luggage along the changeovers.
The first time I travelled using that it felt like a prank.

Best option is use your car and park it there or else take the many private drop offs done by students at Monash.

    • How is Melbourne any worse than say, Auckland? They have no rail to the airport either.

    • I take it you've never been to Los Angeles…

Melbourne airport charges $4 to rent a luggage trolley. What a joke, this should be a free service like it is in other airports around the world. When you exit terminal 4 there are signs pointing to the right saying Uber pickup is in this direction but when you get there the driver will tell you to go to terminal 2 for pick up. Then they will cancel your ride because it takes 10 minutes to walk back there and also fine you $10 because you took too long and your ride got cancelled. Security staff at x-ray in T4 are aggressive and have a collective chip on their shoulder, it's like they all hate their job. They need training on how to smile and be pleasant to their customers. T4 is very badly designed, you need to walk 12-15mins to get to domestic gates 42-52 (Jetstar). Along the way it's all wasted space with zero gates! Why can't they put any gates along here? Not enough seating in the eating area or at the gates so you'll need to stand 30-40 minutes before boarding. Looks like a 3rd world airport with yellow painted concrete traffic barriers on the runway. T4 needs to be demolished and redesigned with thought. Food options in T4 are also pitiful compared to other airports.

      • Wow that was a long rant

      • I disagree with all of that, I find it a modern terminal and have never had any issues with staff, maybe it's YOUR demeanor which antagonizes them. Maybe you are either too fussy or just missed a flight one day because you didn't prepare properly.

  • Noob question. Do we have to use the tickets on the same day or can we scan the same ticket twice on different days? I can only select a single date on the website.

    • I am curious on this too

      • +1

You can use them separately. Meant to be for travellers coming in one day, flying out on another day.

You can even gift it to a buddy to use another day.

It's also just 'one way' so you don't have to travel in any particular direction (eg airport to city Monday, airport to city Wednesday)

    • I asked the staff before. You can’t use both at the same time; you can use them on two different days and direction doesn’t matter.
Edit: I asked the staff when I bought directly at airport. Not sure about this deal.

    • No need to select date on website. It's valid for 3 months from day of purchase.

  • Don’t forget cashback

    • Doesn't work on Agoda transport purchases

  • +2

If there are two or more people traveling, it's only 40-45 bucks for an Uber to the airport from the CBD. Skybus is stupid overpriced and "public" transport to and from Tullamarine has been a joke for as long as I can remember

    • Would be ideal to find 4 people at the airport to carpool to the same destination.

  • Does the booking date matter?
3 months expiry so can I use it before or after the ticketed date?

    • +2

No, purchase date matters. If you buy today you have three months from today to use.

Travelled once to Melbourne and never again with kids. One of the worst ever if you want to leave and go back to airport.

    🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

  • +1

Cheers. Even though it's over priced and gets worse each year, it's still the most cheap way to get to the airport and back with luggage for mum and I. So that's us sorted for our lil Tassie trip at the end of April.

    • Not the "most cheap", but with a decent discount it's a good option.

  • -1

Why is there not a rail line to Melbourne Airport? It's 2024.

  • Hi there,

I am wondering if i purchase a return ticket, how do i select the "return date"?

    Thank you in advance!

    • "Tickets are valid for 3 months from the date of purchase, (10 trip tickets are valid for 12 months from date of purchase). Tickets are not transferrable, may not be duplicated and are non-refundable. A return trip ticket must be used on separate journeys."

So you can pick any date but be sure to use it within 3 months of the original date.

      • Okay cool! Thank you for clarifying.

        Cheers :)

  • I can't seem to see the $31.91 price at Agoda - it's now at $35.45
