  Vivoactive 3 user here. Note Garmin has removed the altimeter in the Vivoactive 5, so no proper elevation tracking. I'd never get a sports watch without it, even discounted from their overpriced RRP.

    Wouldn't it just use your GPS location that has known map heights to work out elevation gain?

      GPS altitude is not very accurate especially in areas with trees, tunnels, etc. It definitely won't do stair climbing well. You'll see lots of post on elevation inaccuracy with VA3 and VA4 and they actually have (flaky) altimeter sensors. Mine is pretty woeful with it's readings compared to friends Garmins.
