Heard that if using Turkish apple id it is much cheaper :)

    • +1

Not sure why the downvote? Thought it was ozbargain and cheap deals and bargains on here.

      • +5

Yes, still cheaper, just signed up a week ago for 79.99try (~$3.84) 1 year sub

Couple more steps as you need to sign up for a trial or the 189.99try annual plan (if you've used a trial already) and manually change your subscription to the 79.99try one under app store subscriptions (if you sign up to the more expensive one first they'll refund you the whole amount automatically once you've changed it)

        • Is it possible to do this on Android?

      • I get it. I only geo-hack deals for companys I don't really have any respect for.

        • Not sure why this was downvoted.

I bought the half price sub even though I hike once in a blue moon these days- the downloadable maps feature is a big deal. Even had I known about it, I would not try to geohack it.

Are there people who are really so morally bankrupt low that they'd geohack to save $14 for an app that's all about exercising in the great outdoors?

Going from the way the voting is going on the above comments, I guess the answer is "yes there are." Funny given the poll answers to the question last week about whether people would buy discounted stolen goods, which was heavily skewed the other way.

@rumblytangara: it's not like AllTrails is owned by Mother Nature. Its owned by a private equity fund in the USA.
The users who help provide valuable information for the app aren't making the profits.

The fact that it is linked with healthy outdoor activity bears no weight on morals vs doing the same thing with a company like Adobe or NBA league pass.

            • @larrylemon: Oh, so it's all okay then

              /s

              • +1

@rumblytangara: if I travelled through Turkey would it be OK to buy it then?

You can do it thtough Indonesia without any tricky jigerry pokery, it's cheaper than the half-price offer, but not as cheap as Turkey. Maybe i was on holiday in Bali when I paid… (or maybe I was in a pie shop in Tasmania)

The app is great and all, and required a good development spend, but they're also monetising the info provided for free by users. So I don't think it's like some dev has to go out paying to visit these trails. Taking advantage of an offer isn't theft, we're not even exploiting a pricing error.

                • -1

@quick-dry: If you are seriously going to do this for $14 a year, I don't think we have any common ground for a serious conversation here.

          • @rumblytangara: You're not really surprised by that linked high minoirty vote are you? That situation is a LONG way from this.

Let's not forget the other side of this coin - that according to some media articles Australasia is a victim of regional pricing. From memory we're asked to pay overs for things like music, games, software and tech items.

            • @Igaf: Yes, because clearly your average Australian wage earner has the same purchasing power as your average Turk or Indonesian.

FFS, the mental hoops that people will jump through to justify themselves is amazing. If you're going to cheat a company, at least be honest to yourself and own up to it. Let's pull tax rates into it next and say that the government owes us free subs to Netflix or something.

          • @rumblytangara: Because it's all user supported data being used, and they do not check it for accuracy. Using Alltrails could have gotten us seriously off course on the Kumano Kodo where signs were sometimes hand painted in Japanese (when we did find them) and out of range of a cell so google translate wasn't any help. Luckily I had done a lot of prep and realized their track was going to send us the wrong way. There was some other trails in Yakushima also quite wrong, and they do not make it easy to simply report a track as being wrong, instead they expect users to edit and fix them. It's a nice app, but it is kinda expensive for what it is.

Will probably be the same outcome, but if you have trouble with the OPs code then try 'autumn2024', which also works for 50 per cent off the annual fee at the moment.

Came here to post the deal and OP pipped me with the northern hemisphere code! ;)

  • -3

Shame it can't be integrated with Apple Maps as an add on somehow.

    Finally jumped at this price
    First hike with it tomorrow
    Thanks OP

Can just download routes and add to google maps instead. Userbase works for free in creating routes for them

      • How do you do it? I thought that cut down "mobile versions' of Alltrails and Google Maps make this harder than necessary.

There is currently a hack in Alltrails where if you bookmark a trail to a "list" it will cache the map and trail allowing you to view it without phone data, but I don't know how reliable/future proof that is.

With the free Alltrails version of my Android app, it appears I can't download gpx/kml files, so I need to login via the mobile browser to download one of these files. Then I can open these file formats in MAPS.ME from the file browser for offline use. Having a backup way of accessing the trail is useful to have when in the middle of nowhere. Or like last month, where the Alltrails compass stopped working after an update.

        • Might have had to gain access to adding suggestions to maps. I forget

  • Hmmmm damn looks like if you subscribe through Google Play and have a cancelled subscription you can't use this.

It only gives you full cost options to resub

    • Had an expired sub and the offer was there when I opened the app.

      • Nah my sub isn't expired.

It's still going until November 2024.

But it's cancelled, so if I try to resub it's just the default price

  • Can this extend existing subs?

    • Doesn’t look like it

    • +1

Yes, I did it via Chrome on my iPhone, just login there and pay. Then close app and reopen.
It’s worth it to me at half price, but you can suffice with Maps.me and Avenza, both of which are free. AllTrails is just a nice easy to use app that keeps a handy record of walks.
If I still had an android phone I would simply use GeoTracker. A lot cheaper and support a indie developer.

I generally just do the local trails near me (ie paved established trails in Melbourne unlike Oxfam 100km type walks). I find that just using the apple maps option to find walking routes from A to B is pretty good and I usually just adjust it to follow the more 'green' trails that I can see. This along with my WorkOutDoors app (one off payment) is enough for me.
For reference I do about 100km of walking a week on established trails like the Anniversary Trail in Camberwell, Melbourne region.
Can someone who regularly uses the AllTrails app please explain their use cases for subscribing to this?

    • +1

Not a user but I'd imagine it's designed for unestablished dirt trails, hikes and 4WDing.

      • Yup I use it for hiking and less so for trail riding.

Trailforks is better but more annoying to use in my opinion.

    • Yeah, walking concrete “trails” through suburbia
is not really the use case (ie. Anniversary trail, Yarra trail, Darebin creek trail etc). These are already catered for via google maps.
Alltrails and Kamoot are for going where google maps doesn’t go.

    • For me it’s good for club walking, because you can download the offline maps, modify maps, and just share them easily with co leaders via the app

If you're an infrequent user like me and just wanting Alltrails+ for the occasional hike, just sign up for the 7-day free trial before each hike. They do not validate the email address you sign up with.

Reasonably serious hiker myself - FWIW a couple of the very formidable hikers in our group use Mapy.cz as their goto app. Euro based but they swear by it. Completely free, well worth looking into.

    • +1

Thanks for posting that, am trying it now. Downloadable map option too- 1GB for NSW.

      • Being able to download maps and use on your Garmin watch to navigate is great so you know you are staying on trail etc.

        • You can do this with all trails by the way.

I sent all the trails I was hiking in NZ to my watch

      • +1

        Happy to assist.

The maps are on it (Mapy) are quite good - have most trails in our region, not quite as good as some the superb maps that a lil Aussie project called 'Get Lost' have been putting out for free!
        https://www.getlost.com.au/

Well worth making a 'cup of coffee' type donation to them if you download their maps, which are of very high quality with superb detail.

The hikers in my group could not believe these maps were 'free' as you normally need to pay quite a bit for this level of info etc.

I used Komoot a lot in Europe for hiking & cycling (Austria & Germany). One off cost of $30 (i think they have offers sometimes?).
I switched to Alltrails when we came to Australia but cancelled. Prefer Komoot.

To be fair is pretty standard type stuff for a free app. As the saying goes, if you're not paying for the product then YOU are the product.

FWIW one of the chaps who championed it to me (who is a very strong walker) is very, very privacy conscious, he actually escaped from the USSR prior to it's downfall & is very suspicious of govts etc - and he has no issues with Mapy.cz's policies but DYOR. :-)

  • Why would Alltrails make a copyright claim on a page that promotes them?

  • Few people here like the feature of downloading maps. Just thought I’d add to say that OpenStreetMaps apps like OSMAnd (Android) or Organic Maps (iOS) works well as a front end and you can download maps. I’ve found slightly obscure mountain bike trails with Organic Maps.

    • Few people here like the feature of downloading maps
I assuem you mean 'a few people' - meaning there is interest in using downloaded maps, as opposed to few (not many find this of interest)?

As for most hike locations you will lose cellular data connectivity either partially or completely - thus only having GPS coverage (and this may also be only partial).

Thus if you're using an app or approach that relies on cellular data rather than a downloaded map - you're goign to quickly find yourself not receiving any guidance at all.

      • +1

Plus massive battery drain while your phone constantly tries to regain connection.

        • +1 - yes, once you're in an area where you know you have no cellular connection you're well advised to kick your phone over into Flight/Aeroplane mode - GPS will work on this setting but it will not be wasting charge chasing wifi/cellular connections.

      • +1

Yes, sorry for my lazy phone English. I meant a sizeable amount, hence my recommendation for OSM (free and open source) which I think would help those looking for offline maps.

Where the hell do i enter the coupon code? I've tried using a new account/email, open the app and asks me to start free trial and then charges me 35.99 after 7 days. I try and manage my subscription via PC which just takes me to a goole page about how to cancle subscriptions in google pay. I try and manage subscriptions in the play store app and there is no where to enter a goddamn coupon code. Where the hell do you enter it??!??!?!?

  • +1

Tried today and it says the coupon is no longer valid
