I Haven't Received Toll Notices and Haven't Paid for Any and Had No E-Tag

Hi OzBargain, keen to get your thoughts on this.

I purchased a used car in December 2023 and I am fairly certain I remember linking the rego to my RMS Etoll Account.

I went to check statement and the account went into negative and got suspended (which has since been rectified), but there is no record of payments on any tolls. I have checked all websites to search for toll notice and nothing is coming up for my rego.

I called Service NSW to get the toll account reinstated and asked the staff member what he thinks and his response was basically "just be happy" that I haven't received notices.

Additional info;
- Basically used every toll road numerous times in the last 3 months (this would be $100's and $100's worth of tolls
- Lots of the tolls have been above 5 weeks ago which is the advised processing time before notices are seen on the websites
- I have not received and notices in the mail and have not changed my address in many years
- Rego was not linked to previous owner's toll account

When I was 18 I racked up a bit of a toll debt and don't want to repeat that!

Thanks in advance for your help.

I Haven't Received Toll Notices and Haven't Paid for Any and Had No E-Tag

I'm guessing the car is assigned to someone elses account. Most like the seller of the car hasn't removed it yet.

    • That was my initial thought, but in the past when I purchased a different car I couldn't add the rego to my account as the previous owner still had it linked to theirs. This one isn't that case.

It is possible it is assigned to a different toll company? Not sure about NSW, but in VIC we have two companies you can use.

  • When I was 18 I racked up a bit of a toll debt and don't want to repeat that!

Then I'd ring back again, and send email to find out whats going on. Im sure they can search for the rego # and tell you whats going on

Don't worry, someone is paying it for you. Like the most of us working hard, we are paying those who doesn't want to work.

    Thanks for letting us know.

Did you have any questions? or just wanted to get it off your chest?

  • It's based on tag right? So just get your new or reinstated etag and make sure it's fixed to your windscreen when you drive.

There's a $60 cap per week now (up to $340) so at least if you need to back pay from 1 Jan it won't be too bad.

Put some money away in case it comes back to bite you in the ass.

Btw, I could have sworn there was a reddit post where someone sold their car and the new owner managed to rack up thousands in tolls that they were paid by the original owner.

@Jimothy Wongingtons, like myself, didn't need to click on the link to know the thread.

You're being honest. Best to have it in writing by emailing them the question and also mentioning when you called and from what number, so they cannot blame you for trying to avoid payments. Find an email on their website. Do this multiple times, like every 1-2 weeks.
