  FYI LG Australia consider that washing machines that fail within 3 years are of acceptable quality and durability for Australian consumer law purposes.

    My experience with multiple LG ~8kg Direct drive washing machines has been universally great.

    But these days you don’t know if they totally changed production suppliers, design or even sold off the brand.

  I have the larger version of this model which failed after less than 3 years. LG Customer Care advised me in writing that a $1,000 washing machine that failed after less than 3 years was of acceptable quality and they wouldn't cover the cost of repair.

  Ultimately, I was able to fix it myself (the issue was a detached internal sensor which is a widespread issue in these machines due to a significant design flaw).

    You should forward that correspondence to the ACCC. They collate such things for future enforcement action.

    i have this exact model.. leaking within the first 3 months.. customer support is frustrating.. i wouldn't recommend an LG washing machine

  OK, my experience with LG washing machines has been fantastic. (3 years is unacceptable for a washing machine life) So had the steam washer dryer for 9 years: unsold as couldn't justify the dryer function which we never used) Now 3rd year for equivalent washer as per above.

  As someone who just purchased a top of the line WV10-1412B which retails for $600+ more than the equivalent capacity 5 series I'm curious how I'd go with a claim (Hopefully I'll never need to find out)

  Price of the good

  Generally, it is reasonable to link to the quality of the materials and the manufacturing techniques used to produce the good to the price you pay for the good. This means that typically, you can expect goods you purchase at a high price to last longer than goods that you purchase at a lower price.

  Example

  Lara buys a high-end washing machine for $1250. Jessica buys a washing machine with similar features for $400. The primary reasons for the price difference between the two machines are the materials and manufacturing processes. Both Lara and Jessica use their washing machine around two times per week. After eight years, both washing machines break down. As Lara’s washing machine is a top-of-the-range good, a reasonable consumer is likely to expect it would last for more than eight years and that therefore, Lara could claim her washing machine did not meet the acceptable quality consumer guarantee. However, as Jessica’s washing machine is a lower quality, budget version, a reasonable consumer may only expect it to last eight years and Jessica would be unable to claim her washing machine was not of acceptable quality.

    Thanks for the link. I think that this is a very common sense approach to things, that will benefit the manufacturer, retailer, and consumer alike: protecting the customer who invests in buying a high end expensive washing machine or fridge that fails after say 8 years or so under normal domestic use, and also protecting the manufacturer or retailer from a customer who buys a $350 washing machine used 10 times a day expecting it to last forever.

    We have the same model and so far I’ve replaced 2 x PCB’s within 12 months.

    Now we do a lot of loads because it’s 6 adults but LG customer care was as useless as a rock and not really helpful by any means.

    So I’m contemplating Bosch or someone else when I move out this year, even though LG is one of the few with the nice graphite/black scheme…

      eeep! Fun times ahead. It's the luck of the draw when it comes to appliances these days unfortunately. Even the most reputable brands produce lemons. Manufacturers have crunched all the data to the point where they ride that very fine line between manufacturing cost and reliability to maximize profits. Given that they are WiFi capable no doubt LG know a lot more than most people realize.

      I did several months of research before purchasing. My sisters 5 series has been working flawlessly for the past 4.5 years. The WV10-1412B got a Choice recommendation and a lot of positive reviews. Like most online reviews they were likely fake/AI generated or they were incentivized by the manufacturer or store to post. Glowing reviews after a week/month of ownership are no way an indicator of overall reliability.

      For all I know for every washer that's needed a PCB replacement there are 100 others that are working fine. With over 10 million dwellings in Australia even a 1% failure rate still equates to tens of thousands of faulty units. That's a lot of landfill!

      Thanks for sharing your experience. Hopefully that's the end of the issues with your washer and fingers crossed mine is trouble free. From what I gather when they aren't malfunctioning they do a decent job at washing clothes
