Been looking for some cheap flights to LA (from Melbourne) for June next year and came across Virgin Australia for $1132 return (need to add on $30 card fee). Pretty good price I thought so thought I would share.

Did a quick play with dates, and looks like you can get this price for dates falling in May and June.

Meals, in-flight entertainment, and 23kg checked luggage seem to be included, the only additional (optional) cost is seat selection.

  • Just remember if you leave LA bring winter clothes lol

      ????

      He was saying June 2013

      Outside of LA?

Like Bakersfield, San Jose, Sacramento or San Diego?? etc

June is Summer in Northern hemisphere….

      • Good pickup ozpete, I saw may and must of thought march

Esp if you go to San Francisco. Mark Twain once said that the coldest winter he ever experienced was summer in San Francisco.

If you go to Alcatraz, ponchos help, but not much lol

    • just been there this "summer" cold as f***

  • Damn, too bad the Amex credit back for spend >$1000 is over…

    • What's the Amex credit back? Is this a promo?

  • I did some dates and there are cheap prices all over the place. eg 15th Dec and return 25th Dec is $680 each way ($1370 rt) and in November fares are looking like $570 each way almost regardless of the date

  • 22 april is looking good. That is private school (non) easter school holidays in WA. Great price for a school holiday get away.

That is a good deal… but it would be pretty silly to book any flights for 2013 considering the world is going to end at the end of this year.

    • Why? not like you can take your money with you when its over.. SPEND SPEND SPEND

      • Oh I agree, spend as much as you can… but on stuff you can use now. Like beer!

  • Virgin is a good airline to do a long haul flight with. Comfortable seats, organised staff and personal entertainment systems.

I cent wait till the new credit card fee laws kick in at the start of next year when qantas, jetsar and virgin are not allowed to make money from people using there credit card

    • Do U have a link to these changes ? I thought it was always the rule that the fee could only be the actual cost but no one did anything to stop people abusing it.

      • Found some info but nothing official. Seems like the rule was always there but as expected no one did anything to keep merchants inline so what department will police it ? ACCC, ASIC no they can't be bothered, its Visa and Master Card !!! If they feel a business is charging too much they can threaten them with removal of services. Sounds a bit crazy outsourcing consumer protection to the credit card companies! Man the ACCC are useless!

    • The fees will probably be passed on down to the customer some other way.

  • Good deal, but I can't find any configuration for $1132 return….?

My search was from melbourne, put in some random dates in June for example and tick flexible with dates then you can see the cheapest option around a 2 week period for both the departing and return flight. In this case it was $601.33 for departing flight and $530.75 return flight. Might be more from other states - Sydney for example was about $30 more when I checked last night (going off memory).

    • My search was from Brisbane (see above). Almost any configuration in November gets you at around $1140 return…i know that not exactly $1132 but…stops typing

Checked through expedia.com.au and they're even cheaper than virgin's own site's prices AND no cc fee on expedia.

    For eg
    3rd May - 12th June = $1149 on virgin's site (+cc fee), expedia = $1,083
    or for this year, 24th Nov - 1st Jan = $1248 on virgin's site (+cc fee), expedia = $1,169.

Have found this before - booked through expedia for a trip to US on virgin and it was cheaper than virgin's site.

    • You'll probably find that the fare basis is different though, ie a wholesale fare that won't earn points and has higher change fees / not able to be changed…

    • I always prefer booking direct through the airline with a credit card. That way IF the airline ever went bust, you could always get you're money back with a charge back. Booking through a third party doesn't guarantee this (As a lot of people found out during the whole Air Australia fiasco)

Paid $2100 for flights the other day. Just called in to cancel (I get a credit) and rebook to save myself $800. AMEX Virgin offer should give me back a further $50. thanks!

The date range for this sale is incredible. Rare do you see December dates on sale and Mel to LAX fares start from Jan 12th (still peak period!)

  • i found some combo ones on skyscanner for MAY/JUNE for $1175, i dont think there is a card feee so its probably cheaper. check them - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/83939

  • I found this at Zuji

All inc for $1109.43, with a layover in Melbourne with Virgin…

  • Hey guys what is there to do/see in LA? Want to go overseas but dunno where to go :O

check this website out: google.com.au it has heaps of information on LA.

      • Lol

  • Good, but not quite like the $850 returns to LAX posted on expedia.ie earlier this year

Going over there in a couple of weeks, thanks to OzB :)

  • Is it cheaper to book through Zuji?

Booked for end of August next year - got the lowest prices, they seem to go up as at 1st September departures. However, returns are cheap until late October, maybe longer. Also did not pay $30 pp booking fee when using Bpay option :)
    Thank you OP!

  • Looks like all the cheap flights are gone! :(

    • yeah some of my friends tried to book flights last night but the price is almost double now. However, they managed to get the same cheap flights through expedia this morning.

      • I checked that also and its on par with virgin prices….

        • hmmm yeah doesn't look good. last night I even did a check on skyscanner.com.au, and some of the other third party sites were still offering the cheap virgin fares

    MAN
    That is so damn typical.
I have been watching every friggin' day for cheap flights to LA.
I go on holiday down south for a few days and what happens… BOOM!
Deal goes up then expires before I get home. I was only away for 5 days!
Can't I have any time away from bargain watching without getting screwed?
