          • @Ruddaga: i mean lets look at this great line up
Baldurs Gate 3 - great game but similar to DS2
Cyberpunk 2077 - released years ago in crap state, finally fixed and the DLC was 10/10 agree
RE4 R - great game but a remake of the great game
Zelda - great but same as Zelda of few years ago
Spiderman 2 - as good as other Spiderman games
God of War R - not better then god of war
Lies of P - great game and very original - I like it

pattern is the same, used formula , slightly improved

my game of the year so far has been the new prince of persia

not saying they dont make great games no more but they are just not as impactful

that or Im gettign older yes

            • @botchie: And now go back to when you were a kid…. Where you'd have the same one game and play it for 6 months and be happy with it.

It's just a different era. Hell this generation of kids doesn't even appreciate how good they have it (streaming services.. game pass etc).

I'm a teacher and this one kid today was complaining to me today that him and his sister both only own a Quest 2 headset each and he wished they both had Quest 3s (he's 12).

Just enjoy what you can and keep on going till you drop dead…

Also who cares if it's a remake or reboot or sequel. Entertainment is entertainment.

              • +1

@Ruddaga: mate, my kids can have what they want but they just want to play Fortnite and Roblox, its depressing

                • +1

@botchie: Their tastes will mature over time. It's not their fault that all the streamers play those stupid games so they just think - OMG THIS IS THE COOL THING TO PLAY.

Literally when students talk to me they ask - do I play Fortnite or COD. I reply - No I play good games.

            • @botchie: @botchie I guess the glass is half empty

        • I agree with you. I havn't got into any of this generations gaming. Was a huge gamer 10-15 years ago, now not so much. I come back to starcraft 2 every now and then.

      • +14

When we were kids we had no concept of time (it was limitless). Now it's a cycle of guilt and thinking we should be doing something else. And then you end up doing nothing anyway and just scrolling on your phone.

        • +1

          Are you me?

      • +2

Fair, but I don't think it's because I am not single. I don't have kids and I have plenty of free time but my brain doesn't find playing games as entertaining as they used to, last time I tried to force myself it felt like a chore.

Probably age, a fully developed frontal cortex sucks a$$

        • some medicinal cannabis can help with that

        • I go through this often. Makes it worse when you force it. I start a game on game pass or playstation plus and then just stop.

I decided to start AC Valhalla recently and I actually enjoyed it. Recently I started playing my PS Vita as well.

If single player games are not doing it for me, I jump onto Halo with mates and gaming just becomes a social thing. Just talk crap in a party chat.

    • my life atm.

    • +1

I have found having the deck as a handy tool to keep up with my gaming. No longer have to steal away from the kids and turn on the PC. Press a button and boom im back in the game.

    • +5

so true. but i'm still buying game non stop. just not playing.

      • +2

        same haha

    • The Steam deck allows me to play games in quick bursts as I no longer have the time I once did; especially with a <1 year old wreaking havoc at home.

It has the perfect "quick suspend" system that you can pause things when needed, for quick on the go gaming.

      • Jus saying out loud. Doesn’t any console simply allow game to be paused and let it sleep. Example is n3ds.

        • +2

Not all handheld PCs do. While ‘hibernate’ can work for some games on Windows, a lot of games crash when suspended.

    • I used to skip classes to play games in secondary school. Now I do play dota 2 every other night and only when my mates could join me

    • +1

I just don't have the time. I prefer to do other things other than play video games which can be a real time sink. I bought a Switch but rarely use it.

    • I was in a similar boat, i didn't even buy my SD for gaming. found myself playing games i never got around to playing while i was in bed unwinding for sleep. even 30 minutes a night, just hit the power button and you are right were you stopped. it's reignited a part of me i though was long past. not saying your experience will be the same but if ya mr money bags.. there are worse things to impulse buy.

  • +6

Might've pulled the trigger on this but I'm going to Japan in 40 days so going to try and find a SD OLED over there. With the strong Aussie dollar against a weak YEN, you can get them as low as $750 AUD tax free for a 512GB SD OLED if you can find them in stock. I don't mind the hunt :)

    • You could get money back on TRS? If you’re going overseas.

      • +3

Yeah but that would bring the Steam Deck OLED down to $899 after TRS versus 77091 yen which translates to $770 AUD so I'm still ahead by $129 buying it locally in Japan. For me, it's hard to justify a portable handheld above $800

    • No stock anywhere i saw this week with my own eyes

  • +2

Tempted at this price - particularly with a trip coming up and potential TRS claim

    • That's my exact line of thinking, makes it so much more tempting than if I wasn't travelling.

    • @AHUANG Does this come with tax invoice as $999 or $1099? Thanks!

      • +1

Mine shows as $1099, so you'll get $100 back from TRS.

      • +1

coupon code was provide by eBay, so the invoice show base on the pre-coupon code price $1099

    • if my trip is in June, is it okay to open it now or do I have to wait until June when i show the receipt at the airport?

      • +3

You can open it beforehand but purchase date needs to be within 60 days of your departure date

    • Can anyone confirm if an eBay order will fly with TRS given it’s a grey import?

    • +5

Kids these days need to stop buying avocado on steam decks and they might have some extra money

      • +2

That $20 avocado on toast every Sunday is the reason why they can't afford a house now lol

        • +7

          Yeah that's the only reason

    • Dack Smith no Steam Deck

  • +4

I’ve conceded defeat and bought one. I play my LCD SD every morning (before the kiddos wake up).

The bump to OLED and 90hz is going to be sweet.

    • +2

The battery life is kinda bonkers.

      • +1

This price is seriously making me consider upgrading to the OLED

  • Can it run Crysis better than a ROG ally?

    • +1

if you go off simulation time error, the biggest factor for game smoothness, the SD oled beats the rog ally in most things. linux is better optimised for gaming. doesn't matter how many frames you get if they aren't smoothly paced. 1% frames are a great indicator but u can dig even deeper and look at sim time error.

  • Does the screen feels small compared to its size ?

    • +1

For the LCD version the screen does feel a tiny bit too small. The OLED is an extra .4 inches over the LCD and would be a nice size IMO

  • i would like to upgrade from the LCD to the OLED, but until the price drops pretty significantly im happy with what i have. finally sub 1k is a good sign tho.

  • Finally pulled the trigger.

  • This is a great price for the new 512GB OLED. I'm happy with my old LCD so I will wait until they announce Steam Deck 2

  • Highly recommend to anyone on the fence. Just know that it's fairly bulky and unfortunately not pocketable. Stick with switch or 3ds for that

    • Says you. Fits in my hoodie pockets perfectly.

  • +1

Have an LCD SteamDeck, it's awesome. Sub 1k for an OLED with the support that Valve is pushing out seems like a pretty decent deal. Proton for compatibility alongside community controller layouts for games that don't natively support controllers is just an awesome combo.

  • I’m soo keen on the SDOLED but I keep thinking about the LeGO as it can easily play Epic, Amazon, GOG launched games and I have a lot of free games I’ve collected over the many moons for them.

    Such a confusing thing

    • +1

Sd can use some launchers but need to do some slight software tweaking. Pause function is awesome on sd and the controllers are comfy despite the weight

      • Ahh ok I thought you had to install windows

        • There's always the sea sailing method to avoid finicky games that demand internet access and what not for offline play

    • I have both an LCD SD and now a LeGO.. LeGO wins hands down… Then again, it's not really because I use it as a gaming device but because it's more like a laptop running windows. I really dislike linux and honestly just don't get 'it' on an OS level.. I like that I can run all my windows software (ie, lightroom/photoshop) and then be also be able to run steam/windows game binaries… also love that you can detach the controllers and run the screen portrait and turn it into a portable pinball machine :)

Also good to be able to swap between desktop and gaming without having to exit into the other mode…

Now to get rid of a cheapish LCD SD..

      • Seeing that the LeGo can be had around the same price of the SDOLED it is really a hard decision

I would be using it just to play games and not doing anything else via windows as I don’t really like windows as I’m more an Apple person having a MacBook etc

I do like the ability of the steam deck being more like a console but being just steam while that’s great, I do like getting free epic games which are some quality games at times too and running them on the LeGo with no issues or anything is a real plus where the deck as mention needs some fiddling and then they may not run well as it’s not optimised for the deck like steam games are?

        • Yeah.. I picked one up this week for $976 from binglee.. As much as I love OLED, the 8.8" 1600p 144hz screen on the LeGO is pretty amazing as well.. Speakers are definitely not as good as the SD…

Don't get me wrong, the SD is a really slick device and if all you want to do is play Steam games, it's really hard to argue with as the big picture mode interface is well polished, unlike the clunky Lenovo 'Space' equivalent. Games do probably run better under Proton, than windows, as Proton has been highly tweaked to get every last frame out of the APU. You'd probably have to do some manual tweaking/massaging to get epic/amazon freebies to work.

I just LOVE having a true 2 in 1 device. Can now ditch my 5 yr old laptop and my SD… and it's much faster than my current laptop.. so win win.. but again, if you're a Mac guy.. it might be a hard sell to use Windows as it's not steamos or macos… and you will need to tweak/swear/get angry when windows gives you the usual wtf groans..

Failing to get epic/amazon games working on a SD, you can always just buy them on Steam when they come up for sale.

          • @Vladdo: Does the Epic, GOG and Amazon launchers work on the Legion Go with ease? Like plug and play or download the launcher and play the games or is the more to it?

    • +1

There is this thing called heroic launcher that installs GOG, Amazon and Epic games. It can even automatically add the game into steam so you can launch it directly from steam.

  • +1

What sort of games are popular with steam? I have a ps5 that I hardly get time to play and collecting dust..am wondering if buying this will result in me moving it to the unused pile as well

  • -2

Switch 2 is on the way, don't see much use for this besides emulation still.

    • +5

I mean they are nothing alike and for completely different audiences.

One plays Switch Games and one plays PC games…

  • +2

For those considering OLED vs Ally VS Legion Go… have used them all… still deciding between the OLED or Legion Go..

    • Steam Deck OLED for ease of use and "It just works" + battery life.
    • Legion Go for a much bigger screen and far more versatile device. (Eg slap on a external display and you have a full PC.. FPS mode.. xbox game pass.. etc etc)
    • ROG Ally if a Legion Go is too big for you.

I do know that places like jbhifi have a massive number of Allys coming back re faulty/overheating… and almost zero of the other two getting returned.

Personally, leaning towards the Legion Go.. I have a 18" portable gaming monitor that flips out like a tablet.. (2560x1600 IPS/HDR etc etc) which is so easy to just connect and power via USB-C from the Legion Go and then I have a full PC when away for business in a hotel etc. Plus the Steam Deck screen feels extremely small after using the Legion Go.

    Bloody decisions…. !

    • +1

Legion Go has n abysmal battery. The second iteration has sorta been announced too.

  • +4

    Bit the bullet.

It’ll be the best of this generation on OS, third party software and ease of access to games alone.

I don’t have access to time these days to mess around to get Steam OS on an Ally, so this is perfect for me.

Just need those sexy reshells from Extremerate to come out, which I’ve read won’t be for a few months.

  • Looking to get a friend in the US to purchase one who will then bring it over on his next adventure to AU. Wondering about charging, I presume it will come with a US charger and I'll need a converter - can anyone confirm? Or will it come with a cord that I'll plug into my PC for charging?

    • It will come with a US charger if you buy it from the US. But you can use a mobile phone charger capable of at least 65w.

    • You just need a converter.

  • Buy off eBay for $999 or buy from Kogan Sold by Kogan for $1129?

  • Does anyone know the pick up turn around from mobilciti?

  • I tried to stream PS5 (within my home network) to a Mac (with the same home network) and it didn’t work well, jittery and bad image quality. Was wondering if streaming to Steam Deck is better.

    • +1

      Probably not.

Is the PS5 connected to router via LAN? Was the TV on when the ps5 screen you were testing?

      • Yeap PS5 was connected to LAN, TV wasn’t on when I tested. Mac was on wifi6.

        • Mac was on wifi6

on 5GHz? What software are you using?

          • @Caped Baldy: The default Sony one from the app store. Is there an alternative app?

            • @lookingforTV: There's some third party apps. I thought you could with Moonlight but maybe not. Chiaki appears to be an option.

Double check your mac is on the 5ghz wifi.

              • @Caped Baldy: Chiaki is far superior to the PS remoteplay app - based on personal experience.

  • Does anyone know if you buy a steam deck from Kogan your covered for 1 year warranty and an additional 1 year for our ACCC rights on $1k plus item

I’m not sure if Mobileciti would cover our ACCC rights even tho they are meant to it might be a good old fashion arrangement

Rep might be able to answer @AHUANG

  • Price looks to have gone up as of this morning
