Did not know fences were being deprived of liberty. See today i learnt. 🤣

      • +3

The poor fences were stuck between cheeks

    • +12

Don't know why people were upset over the idiom, it's a fair shake of the sauce bottle.

    • +18

      hey i know that guy

      • +2

sometimes you have a go and end up a meme. you had a go, mate. that's the important thing.

  • +17

Extra $5 off if you buy two (one for each side of your fence)

  • +1

    Tempting…

  • Had been using the OLED deck for pixel indie games, tried it with a more graphical intense games and was pleasantly surprised how well it ran.

    • +1

Yeah RDR2 running on it is a thing of beauty.

        • +2

Said the guy who complains about the Deck at every chance and lauds the Legion like it's the resurrection of Christ. Get a life.

          • -1

@Tacooo: You mad you don't have a legion? Haha

To be fair, the deck is significantly lighter and more "hand-held friendly", but other than that, legion is king.

      • Do you dock it to a bigger screen like a TV? How does that look and run?

        • Nah I use it handheld.
I once played a bit of Risk of Rain 2 with it docked but otherwise it's not really specced for bigger than 800p (for most games)

It does work well as a PC when docked though

          • @theguyrules: I was hoping for something that could work like the Switch. It's such a great idea. Nintendo really know how innovate. I wish all consoles would follow this formfactor. Game requirements will never drop though.

I don't know. I'm just old and cranky. I want the convenience of a portable to play games on the go, and then come home, dock it, and play games on my TV… without the backwards ABXY buttons. 😂

            • +2

@BadGiraffe: You absolutely can. And it's still way more powerful than a switch (can even emulate most switch games).

But what they're saying is AAA PC games will struggle too hard at 4k, or even 1080p is a bit tough. 800p is what it was aiming for.

Easier to run games will run fine at higher resolutions of course.

Either way. I'm super keep for the switch 2, rumoured to come out early next year.

          • @theguyrules: Unfortunately, bluetooth and audio are borked if you install windows 11 for it as the driver for it is not available yet. Steam is working on it though, since… 5-6 months ago…

            • @lesher: I haven't tried Windows. Just using desktop mode that comes with the Deck

        • I dock mine for Elden Ring, Like a Dragon IW, and FF7 remake. Looks really good. Not quite PS4 levels, a bit under, but it runs well and I don't often notice the drop in quality

          • @tassietigermaniac: Sounds promising. I'll just need to see how easy it is to play my games on GOG, Epic, Amazon, Origin, etc as well. I have a huge library on those too.

I like the sound of the Steam Deck and that it was designed to be a console first, rather than the ones from PC makers where it's a console tacked onto Windows.

            • @BadGiraffe: I haven't tested any of them yet, let me know if you can't find data online about them though and want me to test them for you. I think I've got a few games on all of them

              • @tassietigermaniac: There is, and I would have to try it for myself. Get my hands dirty.

There all this really about the Steam Deck 2. might wait for that to come out before getting one. And when I say "get one", I mean 2 or 3 years after release when the price drops.

                • +1

@BadGiraffe: That's fair. It's a huge investment. I'm getting my money's worth but I know not everyone will. I love mine though

            • @BadGiraffe: Heroic launcher for gog and epic at least…. Should control alright with analogue sticks….

              • @Forfiet: I've read about those.

I used to flash phones, so I think installing launchers and things wouldn't be too out of my league.

It's just tedious, and I'm old now. Patience wears thin.

                • +1

@BadGiraffe: the desktop mode has a 'app store' just search and click install…. both are on there!

                  • @Forfiet: What about getting the games to run? Is it simply running the launcher, downloading it from there and then running it?

                    • @BadGiraffe: More or less yes for heroic launcher(for gog, epic and amazon), maybe more if you use lutris…

Edit: look for videos on YouTube with keywords 'heroic launcher steam deck' you should see some clips on what it looks like and functions….. I'm on the train currently and its a bit fiddly looking for the exact clips….

  • +11

Anyone tempted - do it. You won't regret it.
I paid $200 more for it 2 months ago and I dont regret it (well except for the $200 I could have saved)

    • +3

im tempted but I only play MV games on handheld and have the switch - it seems silly spending $1k for this when I have my monster PC
      at $500 sure :)

      • +2

Same. I already have a switch, an Xbox one X, and a monster PC. I really want a steamdeck, but man I can't justify it, and I don't play games much these days anyway.

      • well I have switch, monster pc, PS5, decent laptop and I still use my steamdeck haha.

      • apart from my mouse, power supply and storage, every individual part of my pc cost more than a steam deck. Even desk, chair, keyboard, iems, audio interface etc. i originally didn't even buy my steam deck for gaming, i had a really weird use case the form factor was good for. my god i did not expect the SD to replace my pc as my primary gaming device. i use it every single day, take it with me everywhere i go. the gaming optimsed OS goes a long way to make up for the lower specced hardware. ignore average frame rates, look at the 1% frame times which ultimately has the biggest effect on smooth gameplay.

    • -5

I don't really get the use case here - running full blown PC games at a pretty poor resolution/refresh rate in a portable but scarily expensive device? Seems worse than a PC if you care about quality, worse than a Switch if you care about value/portability.

      • +4

        Key word is portable.

        I

      • Depends where you are playing too. Can stream PC games to a phone at home and emulate when on the go.

      • +5

I see a few of these comments that echoed with my sentiments before I got the SD.

I currently own a PS5, Xbox Gamepass ultimate (Xbox streaming), a monster gaming rig with an RTX 4090, a switch and an OG steam deck.

For me, an avid gamer, the biggest constraint is time and here the steam deck is incredible. Its primarily used for gaming in bed/or while keeping an eye on our little one, or when I really don't want to sit at my PC. Streaming is very performant on the device, and gives an incredible experience.

        • Moonlight is exceptionally handy for streaming off the desktop rig, I'm currently playing Starfield with all the bells and whistles and before that I was playing Cyberpunk.
        • Chiaki4deck is superb for streaming games off my PS5. I've been playing spiderman 2 and Ratchet and Clank.
        • Xbox cloud streaming (gamepass ultimate) was excellent for playing a whole bunch of games where the save state syncs with my PC (Control and Starfield).

The only game I'm currently playing natively on the SD are Divinity OS II, GTA IV, Witcher 3, Hades, Binding of Isaac, etc. They are also incredibly enjoyable. My switch is solely for nintendo exclusives, as games released on PS5/PC are far superior on those platforms and are likely better experiences. If they're on steam/Gamepass, thats my #1 preference as I can play on the PC and deck with cloud saves making things seamless.

        • +1

For me the quick hibernate wake-up is a godsend. I can’t do that with windows 10

      • +2

Much cheaper than a switch overall if you already have a steam library, switch games are expensive many years after release and you’d eat up that cost difference with only a few games

        • This can also emulate switch lol

      • +4

Give me a sec to reply, just gotta board a plane/boat/train with an EATX rig and a 27" monitor.

        • Well I hope it's not a long trip or your Steam deck will be out of juice before you get halfway there…

          • @caitsith01: Can just use a battery pack to slow down discharging. Also one can just use the power points that are present in most international flights.

    • You prick. Stop tempting me. :) My Miyoo Mini needs an upgrade.

      • +2

Nah don't do it. The CPU/graphics were old when the OG steam deck was released.

        Wait for the next gen.

    • +1

only worth it if you play at least 2-3 times a week which I don't.

    • I bought one and never used it so yeah you can regret it.

      • +1

        Well that's silly

    • Same here! Spent $200 than what is currently advertised in this post….but I don't regret it at all (well, maybe a little 😅) For those uninitiated in the realm of gaming handhelds or steam products, this ticks a lot of boxes. I also have the legion go as well but frequently swap between the two.

  • +1

These are grey imports right? Has anyone had to warranty one/had any issues (OLED or not)?

    • +17

The Steam Deck isn't officially sold in Australia, so they are all Grey Imports.

      • +18

That's because valve hates us, specifically because we have these pesky consumer protections.

        https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/full-federal-court-con…

        • +1

Presumably the same reason they've ceded the field to Meta with VR.

          • @caitsith01: I though they were designing a standalone vr 'deckard'……

            • +1

@Forfiet: Supposedly, but you can still buy the Index in other markets but not here.

        • +1

Possibly, but I reckon it's for practical reasons rather than anything personal/a grudge with Australia specifically.

Steam Deck is still not officially available in New Zealand, for example, where Gabe Newell was considering moving permanently.

  • Odin 2 Pro VS this?

This is slightly more but can play PC… Seems like a much better deal.

    • +9

      Depends on your use-case.

I personally went with the Odin 2 cause I wanted portability, longer battery life and only play emulations/Android Games.

If you are planning to play PC Games, then I would recommend the Steam Deck over Odin 2.

      • How much did you pay for the Odin 2? And from where?

        • I bought the Odin 2 Max second hand with accessories (case, dock, etc) for $600.

        • You can purchase one from the official AYN website.

  • HODL!!!

    • +9

You'll still be saying this from your grave probably.

  • +4

Would’ve jumped on this if I didn’t already get one from my Japan trip. Great machine.
    Been playing Halo and Balatro.

    • Started playing Balatro last night then looked up and 3 hours has passed…

    • What version of Halo are you playing if I may ask? I have the anniversary edition or whatever but never downloaded in on PC. Just happened to be like $15 for the whole pack so it's just been sitting in my library.

      • I’m playing the Master Chief Collection on steam.

        • That's the one. Which game are you running through at the moment and how does it run?

          • +3

@tacos4brekkie: I’m almost the whole way through. Been playing release order and am currently on Halo Reach.

Every single game so far has run at locked 60fps without having to really change any settings. They’re all old games so not too demanding. They look great on the OLED.

    • Where did you find it in Japan if you don't mind me asking? Heading there in a little while and am on the lookout with the exchange rate being so good.

  • +29

Tempting but I just dont have the mental energy to play games anymore. I wish i was younger with less responsibilities but with same net worth. I would have been so happy with this.

    • I agree. Anyone buy this stuff and it just sits there being unused

      • +4

Unfortunately yes. My SD is just sitting on the desk and getting recharged when the battery gets low.
And I mostly play my Miyoo Mini Plus and RGB30 in short sessions when I get some free time.
        Being an adult sucks ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    • +5

One of my biggest drivers for getting is being able to finish some of my backlog while on the train every day

    • +3

Thanks for the weekly reminder to stay single.

Though even without responsibility, the mental energy/excitement fades away as we age. Could also be the lack of amazing single player games this generation.

      • +1

I would like to think that games are just not what they used to be
where is the modern day half life? Warcraft etc - is Diablo 4 the best we get - that game is ass.
I recently discovered I like MV games so that's been a plus for me - they are most Indie made and well thought off

        • +1

You sound jaded mate. There's loads of great games constantly being released.

          • +3

            @jk82: yeah, like ?
whats a good game that is innovative and fresh?

            • @botchie: Check out Control, Alan Wake 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate 3.

What genres are you really interested in?

              • +2

@ThadtheChad: I tried all those and not a fan
primarily I like a good fps game with a story, like half life had or bioshock, deus ex
out of recent games, sekiro (hate souls games) , re4 remake, re8 (didnt like re7)
i did put 100 hrs in DS2 but then lost interest in turn based action

                • @botchie: I thought Control/Alan wake would fit the bill perfectly. After I finished Control, I was gobsmacked at the gorgeous worldbuilding they did.

I haven't genuinely seen too many well crafted story based games in a while. There is Horizon Zero Dawn which has a brilliant story, perhaps that may pique your fancy? I've been toying with the idea of picking up the sequel - once I slowly work my way through my current backlog.

Also going through Witcher 3 on my SD.

Disco Elysium really didn't click with me unfortunately. I read a ton, but I'd like my lengthy exposition in my books, not in my video games. :D

Edit: Check out Black Mesa on Steam.

                  • +2

@ThadtheChad: I tried original Alan Wake and didn't feel it, I think its the 3rd person perspective that I don't really like, but I loved re4 R, maybe I should try control
I finished w3 and all expansions,
oh yeah the last really truly great game that sucked me in was The last of us 1 and 2
                    I bought ps5 just so I could plat 2nd one :)

maybe I should be a critic, games are hard to please me :)
but I got into MV recently and played Metroid on switch, Blasphemous 1 and 2, prince of Persia, Ori and now on hollow knight

            • @botchie: I really enjoyed Disco Elysium, very much recommended.

              • +1

@daniltaru: oh god no, couldn't get into that, too slow :)

            • +1

@botchie: @botchie Sentry, Last Epoch, Helldivers 2, Astral Ascent, Endless Dungeon, Armored Core VI, Baldur's Gate 3, Remnant 2, Resident Evil 4 remake, Returnal, Callisto Protocol, Sonic Frontiers, Elden Ring, Chorvs, The Ascent, Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty, Forza Horizon 5.

So so many, these are just the ones I've played in the last year that I thought were absolute bangers. But there's just so many. Yes I know it's personal preference and it's subjective. And yes I played Half Life at launch and have been gaming that long also. Sometimes it's just a matter of perspective.

              • @jk82: tried most of those and only Phantom Liberty and re4 were great, didn't finish others
havent played Calisto but did deadspace, that was a great one but again remake from ages ago
like I said, I feel they made better games in the past

                • @botchie: If you're talking about most AAA games then sure, I can see where you're coming from since development costs are so high in this day and age for AAA games they play it safe with ideas. "Every" AAA game is an open-world action game with light RPG elements with cinematic story-telling. Even so there are still great AAA games like what people listed above that break that mould.

Specifically AAA games in the past used to be more experimental because there wasn't as much of a financial risk. Experiemental games are still out there but they are mainly in the indie space, you just have to search for a bit to find them.

              • +1

@jk82: You missed dragon’s dogma. Not sure about the second one, but the first one is pretty good, cousin, I just started.

        • +2

In my 40's and I have to disagree. We've had an incredible release of games recently…

Just last year was Baldurs Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, RE4 R, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, Spiderman 2, God of War R, Lies of P…. that is just a few off the top of my head.

What has changed is probably your own tolerance for entertainment. You've seen that much stuff over the years that it's harder to entertain you. I get it… Nothing is going to beat those nights when you were younger and Mario 64 dropped… or playing through the OG X-Com, or four player Golden eye with your mates over the weekend etc….

          Simpler times.

But we've had it good the last few years. If you enjoyed Sekiro run through the rest of the FROM Software library. Personally they're my favourite game series and I can play them over and over again.
