Wow, $715 is pretty cheap for a 512gb steam deck but I really don't see/justify myself ever needing it when I have a light 14 inch laptop with intel XE graphics that can sort of run games as well. :(

    • -1

Which laptop and how much/store please?

      • I got the lenovo yoga 7i 14 inch with an i7 1260p and 16gb/1tb. It is able to run all the basic games like gta v online, fortnite, and subnautica fine on low-medium settings and 30fps. Got it for $1500 last year in store during a sale at harvey norman (I know people hate this store but it seemed like a really good deal back then).

Not really suited for playing games though as the ram shoots up to 95% when playing a game if I dont close my other programs (e.g. 10 - 15 chrome tabs). I realised the integrated gpu is taking around 4gb ram when playing games which i feel is quite a lot. I only use that laptop once a week anyways when I travel to Uni since I mainly use my PC and gaming laptop at home.

    • +2

For me the main selling points of the deck are the pick up and play nature of it and the battery life.
If you sleep it with a game open, you can resume in about 2s. On the train, on the couch or in bed it is also a lot more usable.

    Best $700 balatro machine ever

    • +2

Spend $700 to read "nope" every time I choose the Wheel of Fortune tarot card

      • you can either have this semi useful - useful tarot card..or you can trade it all in for a possible dopamine hit by hitting that wheel of fortune card

WHEEL OF FORTUNEEEEEEE HERE I GO

        • +1

Choosing to ignore useful tarots for the opportunity to pick Emperor (which gives you 2 random tarot cards), and get a Wheel of Fortune out of it, and you play the Wheel and get a "nope!" is peak Balatroing

          • +2

@Papa Huggies: I'll pick Emperor. I'll get Wheel of Fortune. I'll get nope. It'll all be worth it if I pick up the Fortune Teller joker at a crucial point in my run.

  • +6

Been giving serious consideration to ROG Ally.

Seems a refresh this year is highly possible so I'll keep waiting, my wish list for update:

    OLED
    Performance bump
    Battery bump
Native support for full sized M2

    • -3

Sounds great but I REALLY doubt it.
If you like the Valve SteamDeck, the Cheap Base or Affordable OLED, you'll love the Great Value ASUS ROG Ally. And the best time to buy one of these was on release date, the second best time is now. Do NOT wait for it.

    • -1

Also waiting for an OLED handheld WITH VRR and which is NOT woefully underpowered.
Not tempted by the current ROG Ally AT ALL - would be tempted if it were refreshed with OLED and a Performance increase.

      • Performance increase? Isn’t it outperforming everything?

        • This.
The AMD 4095u (Aerith) was a pretty big bump from anything else we've had on the market. Then came the 6600u, then 6800u, and then the 7840u last year. Over year later we get the 8840u and it's the same chipset but "now with AI".

So unless ASUS is cooking something custom like Valve did, there won't really be an efficiency or performance uplift. Unless they wait for this current-gen to pass, and go with the subsequent one.

Let's say 2 BIG core, and 6 small cores, based on a new +4nm TSMC node (or 3nm?) with Zen5 architecture. As for the iGPU, well we're still stuck with RDNA-3 unless we wait long enough for RDNA-4. Rumours show that RDNA-4 will be a very mild performance increase, and focus more on efficiency. That's not good for Desktop Gaming PCs or even Gaming Consoles… but it's great for Laptops, Tablets, and Handhelds. But that would require the chipset for a Q1 2025 release at the earliest, and not the Q3 2024 release that people are hoping for.

Besides, as I alluded to earlier, the Valve SteamDeck is not going anywhere. They're keeping it as it is. There isn't much incentive for ASUS to (vastly) improve their handheld in the near future. It is better if they focus on the original and improving that with software and support externally.

PS: okay, the rumours are starting to flare up about the Ally-2 and I take them with a HUGE grain of salt. ETA Prime just released a video on the subject matter for those interested.

    • +3

AMD has mentioned strix/strix halo launch "later this year", so that (or a similar customised chip) is be a possibility for a performance bump.

  • Does Kogan send out tax invoices? Going overseas soon and this looks great!

    • +2

Yes Kogan sends a tax invoice via email once it’s shipped. Successfully TRS claimed my Steam Deck last month :)

      • Thanks mate!

  • Best price on the Steam Deck Oled 512GB Yet, only $1.33 more expensive than its lowest price, however this is on eBay and by Kogan.

  • +3

once that 512 OLED goes under $1K, a lot of fences everywhere are going to suddenly be free

    • +3

a lot of fences everywhere are going to suddenly be free

      What does that mean?

      • +12

Is it like your bases are belong to us?

      • +4

Maybe they meant fewer people on the fence/undecided?

        • +1

Ohhh, bc peeps are on their respective fences about the whole thing.

      • +10

i couldnt think of a good way to say people will jump off the fences they were sitting on

  • +1

Cheers OP got one Balatro Machine

  • Pretty tempted to get one of these for TRS. How much fcking around to get the Steamdeck to run windows? Or should I just get the ROG?

    • +3

If you’re thinking windows, just go ROG

    • +2

It's pretty straightforward. Runs perfectly fine on LCD. OLED is still missing drivers.

      https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/6121-ECCD-D643-BA…

      • I had a quick look at the specs comparing the SD LCD and ROG. The ROG has a better screen and APU for $240 more. Which one would you pick?

        • +3

If I could only have one, it'd be the Steam Deck.

          • @DASHCAM NOW DUDE: Thx. I still have 2 weeks, maybe the prices will drop more.

            • +2

@rosebank: I don't think the LCD will. The OLED might and so will the Ally.

I've been monitoring these prices for months.

              • @DASHCAM NOW DUDE: I'll probably just get the OLED and install the drivers when they become available

                • +2

@rosebank: the best option is dual boot, and I recommend to get it earlier before your flight since you need to set it up and install it.
am having some issue with the windows installation since I decide to install Windows 10 IOT enterprise for dual boot, but it solved.

Also dont forget to get USB-C hub so you can connect your mouse keyboard if you like fiddling with the OS.

OLED only missing speaker and bluetooth in windows, but I only use the windows to play Fortnite, and the rest of my library is playable on SteamDeck (most of the time I still gaming on PC)

                  • @dione: Thanks for your advice. If there aren't any good watches in the Starbuy weekend sale, I'll get the OLED if it hasn't sold out.

      • +1

Is windows on steamdeck worth it though?

    • What is TRS?

        • +1

So you can claim back the GST you've paid (10%) when you exit the country, but if you bring an item back in and it's valued at $900 or more then you have to pay it back anyway?

So you're about to head overseas and you could buy the 512, get 10% back and then return in Aus and not have to pay that back?

          • +1

@visualdescript: They rarely check, and I've never beed flagged. I've received over 2k back combined over my last 2 trips overseas.

      • +1

        …baby don't hurt me.

      • Totally Rad Show.

  • steamdeck oled or rog ally?

    • +2

      OLED.

    • +2

      Both

    • +1

      Legion go?

    • +1

I went from SD LCD, to SD OLED and settled with ROG.

For my use case which is gaming at home and generally always have access to a power outlet, the ROG performance and 1080p made it the winner for me. In my head I thought the SD OLED screen would match the ROG's 1080p, but it didn't.

SD will easily beat ROG Ally in other areas, so the above is just my personal gaming need. As example, ROG battery life is horrid by comparison.

  • -1

Anybody done the upgrade from original SD to OLED?

    • -1

Do you mean replace the LCD display? You can't.

I did sell my LCD to buy a OLED.

      • -1

Meant upgrade the whole thing - was it worth it for you?

        • +4

The OLED is far superior but games play virtually identical.

It comes down to how much you care about the OLED.

THE 512GB LCD is a bargain for $715.
          The OLED is still dropping.

  • +2

I suggest to hold off on buying a Deck until Valve decides to officially release it here or gives a statement saying that they never will release it here.

    • +5

It's been over 2 years since release. Just get one if you want one.

Valve are never going to officially say "it's never coming to Australia."

    • +3

Sure that information is coming around the same time as the official release date for Half-Life 3.

They have had more than enough time since launch to clarify, don't see them doing that any time soon.

    • +2

Valve hasn't done business here since ACCC slapped them with a fine - fatty is not happy

      • +1

        G-Fat

      • I mean, they technically worked with EB to sell the Index…

But you’re right, literally everyone online treats this (profanity) like some kind of omnipotent god that can somehow do no wrong.

        Guess what? He can.

  • +1

what is everyone playing on the deck? I'm 38 and haven't gamed on PC for the past 10 years already. I know I probably won't touch it after a few days even though for some reason I really want one.

        • +1

Some are, some are not. Just check steam store prices.

        • +2

isthereanydeal.com is your friend. You don't need to buy in Steam. You can buy keys from legit resellers.

Or you can load other launchers like gog, epic etc
(Which appear in the link above)

I just finished Ace Combat 7 - played really well! Currently working through the Titanfall 2 campaign, which also plays really well on the Deck.

    • I installed emulator for Nintendo latest console and other old console as well

  • any huge differences between LCD and OLED ? thinking of getting for our 7yo - love my legion go but this will be the ease he would be ok with in terms of operation :)

    • +1

Battery life is the best upgrade. Wider sRGB coverage is definitely noticeable too.

  • +1

Not bad at all for the LCD and good to see the OLED coming down to earth. I recently got a 64Gb for $602 during the afterpay sale, and I’m really happy with it. Games run surprisingly well on an SD card but I’ll probably add an SSD at a later date. I’ve been playing Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Monster Train and I also installed Litrus and now have access to my Amazon, GoG, and itch.io libraries on the Steam Deck.

    • I wonder what is better for regular use lutris or heroic…..

      • Lutris takes a long time to download and setup a game, but seems to work well for everything I've tested. Heroic works fine in Desktop Mode, but I had many issues getting games to work in Game Mode, and I have no idea why as I'm not that Linux savy. I want to try out the link dione posted above at some point, but I'm happy playing what I have installed atm.

  • +1

Oled in the $800s range please.

Rog Ally not that appealing even at that price.

Abxylute is cheapest I've seen. More versatile than the Playstation Portal.

  • -3

Yeah i would still not pay more than 500 bucks for a steam deck if a switch is cheaper then its not enough

  • Does anyone have any experience playing D4 on the Abxylute? Want to pull the trigger but pretty much will only play D4 on it.

  • My Steam Deck is marked as 'completed', and all that got delivered was a 45W power brick. (profanity) Kogan, man. The last time for me.

    • +3

Kogan ship the deck and power brick separately.

      • That's interesting, I feel like they should make that clear in the way they give you the tracking information. Everything on myEbay would suggest that the product has been delivered to me in full. Even the packaging label had 1 of 1 on it.

        • I know this was a few days ago, but my tracking number has two packages…..

          • +1

@Forfiet: I ordered through Dick Smith eBay, and received mine in a Kogan satchel, which contained both the Steam Deck and power brick. Delivery took two weeks through Team Global Express IPEC.

            • @TekniqAU: Is it a kogan branded PD charger and is it 45w or 65w.etc ?

              • +1

                @Forfiet: It's a Kogan branded PD 45W charger.

I haven't actually used the Kogan one, I'm just using the official UK charger that also came with the Steam Deck, with a travel adapter.

      • Got my deck today, probably wont get the power supply till Monday, sadly could only find my anker 33w, but for non-gaming use its powering it fine….

Getting my larger downloads in before my weekend shifts finish ;)

        • +1

You can use the official brick as long as you have an AU plug adaptor.

          • @DASHCAM NOW DUDE: I know, can't remember where I put them though…. been a long time since I needed a travel adapter ;P

    • What postage carrier does Kogan EBay use?

      • Aramex! Can't wait for my Steam Deck to go missing!

        • bugger just ordered it as well.

        • Just got Auspost tracking details, feeling a little better now.
