China Southern Vs. China Eastern Airlines

Found some good business class fares for both airlines on par with each other and much lower than the middle eastern carriers.

Anyone with recent experience or even any Chinese person that can recommend what is preferred airline in mainland China (I.e which one do Chinese prefer out of these two generally)

Both will have segments with A350, B777 and B787.

  • China southern ranks no.2 from skytrax for all Chinese airlines.

  • Mixed views of China Eastern here but with China southern, depending on your layover you can get a free 1 night hotel which seems great imo.

  • I’d just go the one with the most reasonable connection time

      What about China Northern ?

  • I'm not a fan of either but have only flown economy with them. You said they're much cheaper than the middle eastern ones, have you also compared them to the SEA ones? Singapore, Malaysian, Thai or their budget lines Scoot, AirAsia..

Yes cheapest. Getting business class return fare for $4,000

I recently flew Melbourne > Guangzhou via Shanghai return on China Eastern in business.
    Flew on an A350 > 787 > 787 > 787.

I rated it.. especially for the price.. the best part about China Eastern is that the business class offer is a private suite. Each seat has doors.
I managed to get seat 1A on one of the flights.. it was amazing - pretty much their first class offering.

From what I can tell, it ain't no middle eastern carrier - but I slept the whole flight - food was decent - would re-attend just because of the private suite aspect.

Everyone should fly with a terrible Chinese airline at least once imo.

Beats flying with any of Australia's ….

  • it's not carrier specific, you need to look at the business hard product on the routes you are taking - as mentioned above CEA has some refreshed business suites, while other routes have older business seats that are similar to the domestic european business offerings - huge difference in comfort.
food/soft product is going to be mediocre at best regardless and that's being generous
safety wise most chinese airlines are fairly good despite the usual "ooh china bad" nonsense you hear from the uneducated, better than AirAsia / Garuda and the like. southern may edge eastern out a bit but CE has had a recent accident that's still under investigation if that matters to you. I'd also take an airbus over Boeing 787

  • China Eastern logo font looks like Comic Sans

  • If you're a QFF China Eastern might be better. As it's a partner airline, you can collect QFF points (but not status credits).

I think China Southern used to be a Qantas partner, but not anymore.
