  • Voltx is know for low performance / quality fyi, lets see how this one performs in reality

    • +2

I had numerous well know brands of blanket solar mats die on me over the years, most of them died during warranty period or just outside warranty period. I literally got frustrated with blanket solar mats and moved to panel solar and never looked back.

Yeh, It's inherent to the design. Keep folding a wire and its going to break eventually.

  • Not sold by Amazon so you will get support issues… Just Amazon being Amazon when they don't sell and ship them selves

  • How does Voltx compare to Kings?

    • +2

At least Kings has a physical store you can kick the front door down.

I know anecdotally Voltx makes cheap and nasty lithium phosphate batteries.

  • I purchased the recent 200W Voltx battery during the Aldi deal for $230 - so this is a better price per $W.
Have only used it once - so can’t comment on quality or longevity- but seems ok.

  • I have got the 200W one from Aldi. Purchased an year ago for 199. Still going good. Used a few times over the last year to charge my 100AH deep cycle. On a good day this is enough to run my 50L brass monkey fridge and charge the battery. It is reasonably good built.

  • 160 watts? More like 116 watts peak on our Victron MPPT solar controller
    MPPT? Yeah right…

  • I think this is a pretty good deal.
Aldi sell Voltx stuff so surely that gives a little confidence. It might be just me, but for a while there you could buy el-cheapo no name 120w-160w solar blankets off ebay for $80 or $90 with codes etc, I bought a few. Eco Worthy brand etc. And they still work fine, but I didn't expect years and years of longevity out of them anyway. As a rule I generally halve the advertised peak watts and that might be closer to what you get in good conditions. BUT, the point I am trying to make is I can't really find those cheap blankets on ebay anymore. The prices seem to have gone up in the last 12 months. So this 160w (probs outputting closer to 70 or 80 watts realistically) for $138 delivered is a good deal. Voltx is cheapish but its not the bottom of the barrel stuff. There is worse! And none of these blankets, even the good brands costing many hundreds, last for years anyway. Just my opinion.

I think cheaper panels like this with an upgraded solar controller, like the HardKorr 30amp is a good balance and provides good value for money.

  • You would need two of these to have a reasonable crack at recharging a depleted 100Ah LiFePo4 battery in single day of 5 hours of usable sun, I think.

    • +4

The aim of the Solar Blanket is to help charge it as you might be using it. Not to charge a completely flat battery, but more to keep it topped up as you are using it.

I have a 100w Kings solar blanket for my 4WD and works well on the front windscreen to keep the batteries charged with the fridge plugged in. Plus, keeps the interior of the car cool as a sun shield.

      • I see, you use it as an incidental top up, not for main charging.
One thing about LifePo4 is that you can run it much lower down than AGM or Lead Acid without damage. Down to 30% DoD is quite feasible on a regular basis so, in my case if I was camping, that would be bigger recharges.
Also I doubt these Voltx mats makes their maximum capacity for much of the day, if at all.

I see, you use it as an incidental top up, not for main charging.

No, I have a 25A DCDC Charger for primary main charging.

    • +2

If you have need of a 100Ah lifepo4 then you would surely have a better suited charging solution anyway?

  • Any deals on flexible solar panels? And has anybody got any experience as to how those compare with solar blankets?
