My family is using this kettle, paid $49 last year from Myer. Also bought another one from Big W yesterday as a spare.

According to an online reviewer, the kettle is not recommended for someone with arthritic fingers as they may have difficulty with the button to open the lid. Otherwise it's a good basic kettle at the discounted price.

  • Misread Start for Smart. Looking for a smart kettle at a good price.

    • @tempting lol I found this but cannot recommend Kogan due to bad reviews of Kogan from OzB. I haven't bought from Kogan though

      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarterhome-17l-smart-ket…

      • These were on sale for $66.99 recently. This is the only Kogan item I would buy though. I really liked the Glass smart kettle but it is replaced by the inferior plastic / metal one.

  • Still shows $49 for me

    • Likewise, VIC, 3820.

@geekcohen @tatnal I had to change both 'pick up & in store' AND 'delivery' to Melbourne/Sydney and now they are at full price $49. It still showed $33 when I only changed one of them.
Looks like the clearance is only for WA ($33) & NT ($24). Sorry and will update the post to WA & NT only

  • Where possible, please buy kettles that are 'warm to touch' when boiled (usually double walled).
Children, elderly, guests and even yourself with lack of concentration can result in bad outcomes as often people grab the handle and then the kettle itself with the other hand.
People grab the scolding hot metal kettle and then drop it sending boiling water over feet and legs.

      Cheers for the OHS tip.

    • Thanks for the advice. Would this only be plastic type kettles? We used to have a plastic kettle and I think it was warm to touch. Most kettles on the market appear to be stainless steel type that get very hot and would scald

Edit: This could be the perfect 'warm to touch' kettle

      • A fam member has an old Ronson stainless kettle that is metal and double walled (metal) … is warm to touch (very warm) but not burning.

Boiling water scolding is horrific to see. The person is left in a bad way for a long, long time and suffers.

        Something so simple to avoid.

        • Thanks for the info. Will check out the double-walled kettles.

Better for it to be hot to touch so the user knows there's boiling water.

      • If it's hot on the outside, it means that you are wasting energy.

        • I just boiled my kettle to make a coffee. Took 80 seconds to go from ambient temp to boiling. How much of the heat do you think escaped through the single-wall in that time before the boiling water was poured into my cup?

          • @GhostofB:

How much of the heat do you think escaped through the single-wall in that time before the boiling water was poured into my cup?

            Some of it.

Also it matters if you want to re-heat the remaining water after, say, 30 minutes.

            • @bio: If you're worried about wasting power, then you should be making sure you're not boiling more water than you're going to immediately use.

              • @GhostofB: I like boiling water in advance so that I don't have to wait when I feel like a cup of tea, and I use double walled kettles. Best of both worlds.

                • @bio: It literally took 80 seconds to boil my kettle. If you're pre-boiling water so you can save a few seconds whenever you want your next cup of tea, then telling people they're "wasting energy" with their single walled kettles is a bit much.

If you have anything "better" than this, you are not living the OzB lifestyle.

    • This probably passes the 'warm to touch' test as it's plastic

As you can guess, I'm not a true OzBargainer

    • Have this one as a transition and most of the time I find the cover is not fully closed. Have to double check that every time.

  • Also bought another one from Big W yesterday as a spare.

And people mock me for having a spare kettle. It appears to be more normal than they think. I actually need a new spare after one of my kids accidentally turned one on when it was empty (best kettle I've ever had too).

    • Oh no. I hope you managed to buy back the same kettle.

I hate it when my favourite items are discontinued and that's when I wish I bought a few spares eg difficult to find comfy shoes

      • +1

Sadly not. It was a nice stainless steel Braun one that had a bell that tinged as it turned off. The updated model cheaped out on a few things, that bell included. Every other kettle I've seen just has a basic "click" as it turns off.

I have such a hard life I tell you! :)

        • +1

Sorry to hear. I also found updated models to be inferior in other items

  • Showing $24 to me

    • I feel ripped off. What postcode are you in?
I did some Melbourne and Sydney postcodes but they showed $49

  • How's this different to $7 one from kmart?

    • -1

How's a cheap car different from an expensive one? Same function, different experience. Some decide that difference is worth the extra.

      • -1

A cheap car is different from an expensive one in a long list of ways, including different function. If someone asked how an M series BMW is different from a Suzuki Swift, "Same function, different experience" isn't at all helpful. I can tell you specifics about what you're getting for your extra money between cars at different price points.

        • -1

And you can't do the same for a kettle?

          • @banana365: Of course you can, that's why "same function different experience" is an inappropriate response to the question that was asked.

            • @GhostofB: Someone asking how a $33 kettle is different from a $7 kettle is being disingenuous. They know fine what the differences are. If they don't then they're a bit special.
